World Terrorism: News, History and Research Of A Changing World #6 Disinformation, Inc.
Global Politician/Ocnus.Net ^ | Dec 17, 2006 | Professor Daniel M. Zucker

Posted on 12/17/2006 4:03:30 PM PST by DAVEY CROCKETT

VEVAK learned its methodology from the Soviet KGB and many of the Islamist revolutionaries who supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini actually studied at Moscow's Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, the Oxford of terrorism. Documented Iranian alumni include the current Supreme Leader (the faqih) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, under whose Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Islamic Jurisprudent) apparatus it has traditionally operated. Its current head is Cabinet Minister Hojatoleslam Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezhei, a graduate of Qom's Haqqani School, noted for its extremist position advocating violence against enemies and strict clerical control of society and government. The Ministry is very well funded and its charge, like that of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (the Pasdaran) is to guard the revolutionary Islamic Iranian regime at all costs and under all contingencies.

From the KGB playbook, VEVAK learned the art of disinformation. It's not so difficult to learn: tell the truth 80% of the time and lie 20%. Depending on how well a VEVAK agent wants to cover his/her tracks, the ratio may go up to 90/10, but it never drops below the 80/20 mark as such would risk suspicion and possible detection. The regime in Teheran has gone to great lengths to place its agents in locations around the world. Many of these operatives have been educated in the West, including the U.K. and the United States. Iranian government agencies such as embassies, consulates, Islamic cultural centers, and airline offices regularly provide cover for the work of VEVAK agents who dress well and are clean shaven, and move comfortably within our society. In this country, because of the severance of diplomatic relations, the principal site of VEVAK activities begins at the offices of Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.

Teheran has worked diligently to place its operatives in important think tanks and government agencies in the West. Some of its personnel have been recruited while in prison through torture or more often through bribery, or a combination of both. Others are Islamist revolutionaries that have been set up to look like dissidents - often having been arrested and imprisoned, but released for “medical reasons”. The clue to detecting the fake “dissident” is to read carefully what he/she writes, and to ask why this vocal “dissident” was released from prison when other real dissidents have not been released, indeed have been grievously tortured and executed. Other agents have been placed in this country for over twenty-five years to slowly go through the system and rise to positions of academic prominence due to their knowledge of Farsi and Shia Islam or Islamist fundamentalism.

One of the usual tactics of VEVAK is to co-opt academia to its purposes. Using various forms of bribery, academics are bought to defend the Islamic Republic or slander its enemies. Another method is to assign bright students to train for academic posts as specialists in Iranian or Middle East affairs. Once established, such individuals are often consulted by our government as it tries to get a better idea of how it should deal with Iran. These academics then are in a position to skew the information, suggesting the utility of extended dialogue and negotiation, or the danger and futility of confronting a strong Iran or its proxies such as Hizballah (Hezbollah). These academics serve to shield the regime from an aggressive American or Western policy, and thereby buy more time for the regime to attain its goals, especially in regards to its nuclear weaponry and missile programs.

MOIS likes to use the media, especially electronic media, to its advantage. One of VEVAK's favorite tricks is setting up web sites that look like they are opposition sites but which are actually controlled by the regime. These sites often will be multilingual, including Farsi, German, Arabic French, and English. Some are crafted carefully and are very subtle in how they skew their information (e.g., Iran-Interlink, set up and run by Massoud Khodabandeh and his wife Ann Singleton from Leeds, England); others are less subtle, simply providing the regime's point of view on facts and events in the news (e.g., www.mujahedeen.com or www.mojahedin.ws). This latter group is aimed at the more gullible in our open society and unfortunately such a market exists. However, if one begins to do one's homework, asking careful questions, the material on these fake sites generally does not add up.

Let's examine a few examples of VEVAK's work in the United States. In late October, 2005, VEVAK sent three of its agents to Washington to stage a press event in which the principal Iranian resistance movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), was to be slandered. Veteran VEVAK agent Karim Haqi flew from Amsterdam to Canada where he was joined by VEVAK's Ottawa agents Amir-Hossein Kord Rostami and Mahin (Parvin-Mahrokh) Haji, and the three flew from Toronto to Washington. Fortunately the resistance had been tracking these three, informed the FBI of their presence in Washington, and when the three tried to hold a press conference, the resistance had people assigned to ask pointed questions of them so that they ended the interview prematurely and fled back to Canada.

Abolghasem Bayyenet is a member of the Iranian government. He serves as a trade expert for the Ministry of Commerce. But his background of study and service in the Foreign Ministry indicates that Bayyenet is more than just an economist or a suave and savvy businessman. In an article published in Global Politician on April 23, 2006, entitled “Is Regime Change Possible in Iran?”, Bayyenet leads his audience to think that he is a neutral observer, concerned lest the United States make an error in its assessment of Iran similar to the errors of intelligence and judgment that led to our 2003 invasion of Iraq, with its less than successful outcome. However, his carefully crafted bottom line is that the people of Iran are not going to support regime change and that hardliner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad actually has achieved greater popularity than his predecessors because of his concern for the problems of the poor and his fight for economic and social justice. To the naive, Bayyenet makes Ahmadinejad sound positively saintly. Conveniently overlooked is the occurrence of over four thousand acts of protest, strikes, anti-regime rallies, riots, and even political assassinations by the people of Iran against the government in the year since Ahmadinejad assumed office. So too, the following facts are ignored: the sizeable flight of capital, the increase in unemployment, and the rising two-figure rate of inflation, all within this last year. Bayyenet is a regime apologist, and when one is familiar with the facts, his arguments ring very hollow. However, his English skills are excellent, and so the naОve might be beguiled by his commentary.

Mohsen Sazegara is VEVAK's “reformed revolutionary”. A student supporter of Khomeini before the 1979 revolution, Sazegara joined the “imam” on his return from exile and served in the government for a decade before supposedly growing disillusioned.

He formed several reformist newspapers but ran afoul of the hardliners in 2003 and was arrested and imprisoned by VEVAK. Following “hunger strikes”, Sazegara was released for health reasons and permitted to seek treatment abroad. Although critical of the government and particularly of Ahmadinejad and KhameneМ, Sazegara is yet more critical of opposition groups, leaving the impression that he favors internal regime change but sees no one to lead such a movement for the foreseeable future. His bottom line: no one is capable of doing what needs to be done, so we must bide our time. Very slick, but his shadow shows his likely remaining ties to the MOIS.

Egyptian MP: Nothing will work with Israel except nuclear bomb that will wipe it out of existence

1938 Alert: "Egyptian MP: Nothing will work with Israel except nuclear bomb," from The Associated Press, with thanks to An Art Major:

Israeli excavations near the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem sparked angry reactions on Monday from Egyptian parliament members, including one who said only a nuclear bomb could stop Israel.

The excavations, which aim to salvage artefacts before construction of a pedestrian bridge leading to the complex also sacred to Jews, have angered many Muslims who fear the work will harm the foundations of al-Aqsa mosque. Israel says the holy places will not be harmed.

"That cursed Israel is trying to destroy al-Aqsa mosque," Mohammed el-Katatny of President Hosni Mubarak's National Democratic Party (NDP) told a heated parliament session held to discuss the Israeli digging.

"Nothing will work with Israel except for a nuclear bomb that wipes it out of existence," he said.

D.C. Imam supporting jihad terror and Islamic supremacism

"The most glorious death is the death of the martyr," says Imam Musa's Myspace page. And also:

His methodology draws heavily on the writings of Malcolm X, Maulana Mawdudi, Hasan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutb, Kalim Siddiqui, and Imam Khomeini. New members of the group are encouraged to individually familiarize themselves with the works of these political Islamic thinkers in addition to daily classes and lectures on classical Islamic studies, Arabic, hadith and Qur'an. Special emphasis is placed on personal development and growth based on the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), as well as incorporating tightly knit family units within the overall community structure. The movement has spread across the US and is extremely popular among college students and African-American youth. Imam Musa has been regularly invited to speak at college campuses and Islamic events around the world. Critics have suggested that he promotes anti-Semitism in his speeches, which he claims are directed at Zionist supporters of Israel and not at Jewish people in general. During a rally in July 1999 Imam Musa displayed a cashier's check made out to "Hamas, Palestine," to protest the 1996 U.S. law which declared Hamas a terrorist organization.

Mawdudi, al-Banna, Qutb, and Khomeini all taught, as has been documented here many times, that Muslims must wage war against unbelievers in order to establish over them the hegemony of Islamic law and subjugate them as dhimmis.

You can hear this man preach about how blacks should forsake nationalism and embrace Islam at the Myspace page.

Thanks to Dr. Rusty Shackleford, who has more audio.

Truck Spills 165,000 Eggs on Highway

By LUBNA TAKRURI
Associated Press Writer

spill,0,3476930.story?track=rss

WASHINGTON -- Drivers on their way to breakfast in northern Virginia
on Saturday found it all over the road after nearly 165,000 eggs
spilled out of an overturned tractor-trailer on the Capital Beltway.

"It looked like a large omelet," said Michael Karbonski, of the
Virginia Department of Transportation.

The tractor-trailer crashed into a guard rail just after midnight
Saturday, spilling its runny load and forcing officials to close an
exit ramp to Interstate 66 and the far left lane of Interstate 495
north for several hours. Everything reopened just after 11 a.m.

The truck driver fled the scene before police arrived and had not
been located by Saturday afternoon, said state police spokesman Sgt.
Terry Licklider. He said the driver would likely face charges for
fleeing and possibly other offenses.

"For him to just up and leave like that, that's kinda odd,"
Licklider said.

The truck and trailer are owned by H.L.W. Inc. in Moorefield, W.Va.,
Licklider said. The owner of the company, H.L. Wilson, told The
Associated Press he hadn't heard from the driver either.

"Don't know where he's at," Wilson said. "Don't know what the deal
is."

Fairfax County police used a helicopter to search for the missing
driver.

VDOT spokeswoman Joan Morris said the eggs made their way to a
drainage ditch, where they created "a river of yellow yolk."'

It's a good thing it wasn't summer, officials said, because the mess
could have been worse. But cold temperatures prevented workers from
using any water to clean the road for fear of freezing the eggs and
the roadway.

Instead, the cleaning crew used kitty litter -- 250 pounds of it --
to absorb the highway omelet then swept it up and took it away in
three trash bins, Morris said.

Wilson, 60, said the eggs were destined for a hatchery in Salisbury,
Md., where they would have become chickens to be eaten at fast food
restaurants.

Zawahiri pledges his allegiance to Mullah Omar

The new tape is out and the Jawas have Laura Mansfield’s translation. CNN’s playing up this passage, but I don’t think it’s that significant:

The Muslims espoused allegiance to the Ottoman state, which was Turkish, and before that, they espoused allegiance to Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, who was Kurdish, and before him, Nur ad-Din bin Zanki, who was Turkish. And the Muslims in the Maghreb espoused allegiance to Yusuf ibn Tashfin, who was a Berber.

And we - by the grace of Allah and His guidance - have pledged allegiance to the Commander of the Believers, Mulla Muhammad Umar, who is an Afghan.

That’s why I ask my Muslim brothers in general and the callers and Mujahideen and their media organizations in particular to highlight the concept of Islamic brotherhood and disown all partisanship, loyalties and animosities based on nationalism, and I ask them not to allow the wrongdoing of a faction or entity motivate them to speak evil of that party’s entire people or race.

Has the crown passed from Osama to Omar? Well, here’s what Z said on December 20 for comparison:

[Y]ou know that your Mujahid brothers, especially in Qaida al-Jihad, are – by the grace of Allah – the farthest people from ethnic fanaticism. They have pledged allegiance to the Commander of the Believers, Mulla Muhammad Umar, as their commander, and he isn’t an Arab.

In the course of the same message, he referred to “our commander, Shaykh Usama bin Ladin (may Allah preserve him).” Where Omar and Osama rank vis-a-vis each other in the jihadi chain of command is anyone’s guess; the point is, Zawahiri’s obviously comfortable with concurrent allegiances.

A subsidiary question presents itself: has he referred to Osama in any messages after December 20? As it turns out, no. Here are Mansfield’s translations of the December 29th Eid message and the January 3rd message on monotheism (scroll down to the disembodied head screenshot). There are no references to him in either, nor are there any in the new message. I’m not prepared to sift through all the transcripts going back to 2001 to find out how long he’s gone without mentioning Osama, but if anyone wants to take a crack and report back, I’m all ears.

Anyway. I’m sure the Shiites in Iraq who’ve spent time scraping their relatives off the sides of buildings from AQ suicide bombs will appreciate his call tonight for Muslim unity. I leave you with our quote(s) of the day, guaranteed to leave ‘em laughing on DU:

Bush suffers from an addictive personality, and was an alcoholic. I don’t know his present condition (Americans know best about that, as they are experts in alcohol and addiction to it), but the one who examines his personality finds that he is addicted to two other faults: lying and gambling. As regards lying, his record is well known, and he has gone down in history as one of its most notorious liars. As for his addiction to gambling, it motivates him to continue to place losing bets until he goes completely bankrupt, which is the obvious psychological motivation behind his Iraq policy…

These traitors in Iraq and Afghanistan must face their inevitable fate, and face up to the inescapable facts. America - which was transformed from the “Great Satan” into the “Closest Ally” - is about to depart and abandon them, just as it abandoned their like in Vietnam.

Bush suffers from an addictive personality, and was an alcoholic.

I disagree that Bush was, in any way, an alcoholic but the quote on having an addictive personality is interesting. Don’t get me wrong. Nothing these idiots have to say is of any meaning, but Bush does exhibit some stubborn loyalties and frames of reference. For example, Bush has not given up on Iraq; he has not waned in fighting the war on terror (I submit his recent call for a ’surge’of troops as evidence of this), and Bush has been loyal to the likes of Donald Rumsfeld, et. al., until they had to go. Addictive? Well, perhaps. One thing is certain: by this quote:

…which was transformed from the “Great Satan” into the “Closest Ally” - is about to depart and abandon them, just as it abandoned their like in Vietnam.

They are definitely channeling the MSM and far-left talking points to arrive at such a conclusion. They hope that what they’re hearing from these groups is a measurement of how the American public feels. Perhaps they can wait us out after all. Up against our military and a united America they fail. Faced with cut-and-run politicians and a media that serves as a drum beat for them, they win. Sad, but true.

You left out the warning/suggestion that the Z man had for democrats

Al-Zawahiri also took aim at Democrats, directing a part of his message to them.

“The people chose you due to your opposition to Bush’s policy in Iraq, but it appears that you are marching with him to the same abyss, and it appears that you will take part with him in the defeat and certain failure, with God’s permission,” he said.

“And the American people shall discover that you are all one side of the same coin of tyranny, criminality and failure.”

My money is on UBL sitting around the pool, sipping java with his 50 wives, and rubbing Dinnerjackets feet now and then. If UBL is dead…great….but it wouldn’t surprise me if UBL, Z, and MO are all in a motel 6 outside of Qum.

Zawahiri farts and the MSM has an orgasim. Grab for the “catch” towel……… Yes, I agree, disgusting.

No question of the substance, no “Zawahiri lied, People died..”

No detailed analysis of the connection between Zawahiri, Iran, Syria, and the attack and death of American/Coalition {especially Australia, “Thanks, Mates..”} troops….

No Rosie O’Donell moment, no Bill Maher quiwp, no Dixie Chick grammy speech……..

No Zawahiri photo on the cover of “Time” as the “Gingrich who stole Christmas”….

No movie with George Clooney, playing a younger Zawahiri, making the case for defeating the United States along with Global Warming at the same time…..

No reference to the “civil war” actually happening in Europe, since the daily fire bombings are off our TV screens and “F'’K Freedom” signs have been banned from our sight…….

No time line and history of Zawahiri, and the true death toll the United States and it’s allies have actually had to deal with………

No, it’s Bush’s fault……. didn’t you hear the Dixie Chicks acceptance speach? Even Al Gore was there, what other proof do you need?

On Bush and Addiction…

Perserverance is not addiction.

Conviction is not addiction.

Faith is not addiction.

Being a student of history, I cannot help but think of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War when I think of G.W. Bush now. And nota bene: I am not a 100% Bushie. His policy south of our border really pisses me off.

I know the following is not an exact match for the War we wage today, but the issues are similar. From unbridled patriotism to self doubt, to treasonous behavior to backstabbing and divise politics, to loss and to despair. Hopefully, we will understand that to retreat is to delay the fight, to strengthen our enemy’s resolve and to multiply the deaths to come.

The truth is that today’s Islamic Radicals want one thing: a World Wide Islamic Caliphate. Why should they reach for less when faced with the weakness show by Europe and the American Left? I wouldn’t.

Anyways…on to the Civil War…see if you can spot similarities to today.

Stage 1: Patriotism!
1. Fort Sumter was fired upon by the Confederacy; Northern citizens enlisted in droves.
2. Northern citizens held picnics and banquettes to honor America and her newly inducted soldiers.
3. Senators pontificated and made bold speeches.
4. The Northern states were united.
5. Lincoln warned the country to be prepared.

Stage 2: Reality
6. The battle was met…defeat experienced.
7. Winter soldiers despaired.
8. Senators started to grumble and nitpick.
9. The army engaged in back stabbing politics
10. The News Media (print newspapers) started to harp and critisize.
11. Lincoln steeled his resolve.

Stage 3: Treason
12. The News Media engaged in what General Grant called treason (reporting troop strength, movements, reporting only defeat and woe–offering succor to the enemy)
13. The opposition party (Democrats) started to undermine the war–a loss in a battle or the whole war meant power for the Democrats.
14. Commanders were shuffled monthly
15. Lincoln maintained his faith in his mission and stood by his policies and the prosecution of the war. He did not adopt a nuanced pose…

Stage 4: Victory
16. The South began to despair–the North wouldn’t give up even when dealt horrific losses.
17. The North began to realize that war means killing.
18. The North began to realize that by killing, the war would end sooner.
19. The Army was allowed wage war with the support of the government, not micromanagement by it.
20. Lincoln convictions won.

ps. sorry for any mispellings and such, once again, I decide to post right before bed…

Why is this man still breathing?

georgej on February 13, 2007 at 6:34 AM

About the Civil War….

In Chief Justice William Rehnquist’s book All the Laws but One, he points out that in the north, about half the people were not adverse to the South seceding in peace — right up until Fort Sumter, then the public sentiment turned overwhelming to responding to the Confederacy by waging war.

In fact, negotiations between the United States and the Confederacy over compensation for federal property in the South were underway. The Post Office was still carrying the mail between the Confederacy and the States.

Then the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter. And that changed everything.

In other words, the Confederacy BLEW IT! They would have HAD their independence had they not attacked Fort Sumter.

georgej on February 13, 2007 at 6:43 AM

Could it be that UBL really is taking a dirt nap? We heard whispers back in Feb. of 2002 that he was bagged by a Predator on a snowy hillside. Could this be an anniversary statement of sorts??

THE MEMORIAL

We tried, we tried, Oh God we tried
So we could be here too
And walk around remembering
And look for names we knew

Our lives were lost so far away
Upon a distant shore
But we are here in memory
As you read our names once more

Remember us, Remember us
Although we're truly gone
Remember us, as we once were
And not just names in stone.

Leftist activists who march to the Pentagon next month will discover that their path won't be as clear as it has been in the past.

The group, led by Cindy Sheehan, Jane Fonda, Ramsey Clark and their ilk, plan to gather March 17 at the Vietnam Memorial Wall to begin a march to protest America's involvement in the Iraq war. The date marks the fourth anniversary of the war's beginning.

This time, however, protestors will see objectors if they spit on Iraqi veterans again, or throw paint on a war memorial. This time, they will encounter a buzz saw of Vietnam veterans and supporters who will gather to protect the Wall, and show their support for U.S. troops. The counter-protestors are calling themselves the Gathering of Eagles. ...

Click the image to learn more, then check out the new Gathering of Eagles blog here and the forum here. It's time to get involved, people. If you can't make it to Washington that day, won't you at least help spread the word? Hat tips: William Page, Viper Ash, others.

Statue Of Jesus Beheaded At Local Church - NY (Previously Statue in CA)

Statue Of Jesus Beheaded At Local Church

Christine Sloan
Reporting

(CBS) WEST, N.Y. Police in West, New York are searching for the
vandals who destroyed a statue of Jesus outside a local church after
worshippers found the five-foot statue lying in pieces.

Students from Our Lady of Libera School helped to pick up the pieces
of the desecrated statue of Jesus and laid flowers on the ground by
the mess on Monday morning.

"Father Phil gave me a rose and I put it down next to Jesus," second-
grader Alex Contreras, said.

Other second-graders prayed too, overwhelmed by the sheer cruelty
that took place at their church over the weekend.

"I was really sad that they broke his head off and threw him on the
floor," said another student, Soraya Salazar.

Alexandra Kehagias agreed with her classmate. "I'm very, very sad
and angry, and angry at the people who did this," she said.

Church members believe the person or people who did this beheaded
the statue first, then pushed the body to the ground. "The nose
would have been crushed. It could have been beheaded first," said
Rev. Philip J. Rotunno, the pastor of the 105-year-old church. He
says the vandals also took a hand from the statue of Mary, which is
in the same courtyard.

"I want to first repair them because they're donated by founding
families of the parish and those families are shattered," he said.

Police have been going to stores in the area, looking for possible
witnesses.

"Right now, we're investigating this as a criminal mischief case. At
this point, there's nothing to indicate a hate crime," West New York
Police Director Tim Griffin said.

The vandalism has broken big and small hearts alike, but
parishioners say they forgive the person or people who committed the
horrible acts.

"I've been here since 1993 and nothing like this has happened.
Waking up to this image it's just hurtful," school principal Ana
Maria Castaneda said.

If you have any information on this case, you're urged to call the
West New York Police at 201-295-5000.

Czech police database will disable stolen cell phones

http://www.praguepost.com/articles/2007/02/07/call-blocked.php
Call blocked
New police database will disable stolen cell phones
By Paul Voosen
Staff Writer, The Prague Post
February 7th, 2007

The cell phone inhabits — along with its pocket brother, the MP3 player
— a recently created space in consumers’ lives. Unlike other valuables,
which can be safely stored at home, the value of the cell phone is
tangled up in its small and mobile nature — the same nature that makes it
an ideal target for theft.
So, if phones can’t be kept under lock and key, how can theft be
deterred?
A joint effort between Czech police and the country’s three cell phone
operators aims to offer a solution: Within six months, the police
expect to launch a countrywide database of stolen phones, coordinating with
all three providers (Telefónica O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile) to block
access to their GSM networks from any blacklisted phone.
“This is going to bring a decline in business-oriented theft, when
phones are stolen to sell at second-hand stores,” said Roman Skøepek,
spokesman for the Police Presidium.
Similar databases exist in many other European Union countries,
including the United Kingdom, France and the Nordic countries, said James
Moran, a security expert with the GSM Association, a trade group
representing 700 cell phone operators worldwide.
Last year, there were 19,549 reports of stolen cell phones in the
country, according to the police, down from 25,842 in 2005 and 27,796 in
2004. At first blush this suggests a downward trend, but that is likely a
false assumption, Skøepek said.
“Those statistics only include cell phones stolen whose worth is
greater than 5,000 Kè ($230),” he said. “With phones getting cheaper to buy,
they often don’t reach this plateau and so are not registered as
criminal offences.”
No other statistics on cell phone theft in the country are kept, and so
the true extent of theft remains as much a matter of conjecture as
fact.

Hardwired
Cell phone crime falls into two typical categories: theft of service,
when a thief uses the victim’s SIM card to make illegal calls, and theft
of the actual handset. Since SIM cards are tied to individual
providers, users have long been able to report their account stolen to their
provider, which would then disable the SIM card — sometimes for a hefty
fee.
Handsets, however, are designed to be operable among GSM networks,
meaning that, once the provider disables the SIM, the phone can still be
used with a different card and sold to a second-hand store at a cut-rate
figure.
To combat this illegal recycling, cell phone manufacturers and
providers designed the IMEI code, a serial number hardwired into all cell
phones (the code of most phones can be brought up by punching *#06#).
IMEI specifications have existed since the 1990s, but, for a long time,
their implementation was bungled, with manufacturers producing phones
with duplicate codes and little security.
“Two or three years ago, it made almost no sense to block IMEI numbers
because they were so easily changed,” said Martina Kemrová, spokeswoman
for T-Mobile. But, thanks to revisions in technology, “it is now much
more likely that an IMEI number will stay the same.”
Once the database is active, victims reporting phone theft who can
prove ownership — keep your receipt — will have their phones’ IMEI codes
added to the national database, which will be periodically updated
through secure connections to the providers. The database will also be
publicly available online through the Interior Ministry’s Web site.
All three providers have the technology to block IMEI numbers, though
Telefónica O2 is the only company currently doing so, as it has since
2001, said Martin Žabka, spokesman for the company.
The 2005 Electronic Communications Act ordered that all Czech providers
be capable of blocking IMEIs at police request, and Vodafone and
T-Mobile came into compliance with this last year.
The companies are now waiting for the police to implement its side of
the database, which is expected within the next half-year.

Bricked
Blocking IMEI numbers is a matter of deterrence and for such campaigns
to be successful they need to be publicized, Moran said. It is
important to remember that blacklisting constitutes “just one element of an
overall strategy that requires the involvement and support of government
and police.”
Jakub Hrabovský, spokesman for Vodafone, agrees and hopes that the
police will run a public-information campaign once the database is active.
Another hope for a decline in cell phone theft is the sheer ubiquity of
cheap yet quality phones, many of which can be had for a crown when
users sign up for contracts with companies. This can lower demand for used
handsets and, by extension, stolen handsets.
But, while cheap new phones abound, expensive and feature-rich smart
phones are also growing in use, and these are likely to become highly
targeted when the used-phone market bottoms out, Kemrová said.
Joint-blocking IMEI numbers, so that the phones become inoperable bricks inside
the country, could go a long way to controlling these crime rates.
Most cell phone theft comes from one-off pranksters or thieves, Skøepek
said. Organized crime is not a factor, and there are no trucks
exporting loads of stolen phones to other countries.
Also needed to complement IMEI blocking is a law that makes tampering
with a phone’s IMEI a punishable crime, said Žabka. Many other
countries, such as the United Kingdom, already have similar legislation on the
books.
With activation of the database still months off, the police and
operators can only provide advice to their customers on what to do to avoid
theft.
“Carry your phone somewhere where it can’t be seen,” said Skøepek.
“Don’t show it off. And always be aware of pickpockets on public
transportation.”
“When you purchase a phone, keep all your paperwork,” Hrabovský said.
“Only with that can you ask police to file charges.
“And save your contacts, all the information that your phone contains.
It’s irreplaceable these days.”

Czechoslovak military intelligence trained secret commandos

http://www.praguemonitor.com/en/22/czech_national_news/1135/
Czechoslovak military intelligence trained secret commandos
by Prague Daily Monitor/ÈTK / published 13 February 2007

The Czechoslovak communist military counter-intelligence (VKR), part of
the state secret police (StB), trained secret commando units, including
some 100 special agents, for kidnapping, killing and sabotage in
then-West Germany from 1972, the daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) reported
Saturday.

The paper says that information on these commandos was uncovered in the
archives of the current military intelligence service. The intelligence
service has not released the names of the agents, the paper adds.

MfD writes that the VKR prepared agents in secret training centres
which the current command of the Czech military intelligence did not know
about.

The agents were trained for the deployment in then West Germany where
they should detain or kill key personalities, such as politicians,
influential economists and army officers and occupy crucial facilities,
including the U.S. nuclear missile silos, radio transmitters, radar bases,
sites of the AWACS reconnaissance aircraft and power plants.

Moreover, the VKR established a network of agents in West Germany who
were to help the commandos (called "the groups of special designation")
after their deployment on German territory. The collaborators were in
particular report the Germans for whom the Czechoslovak commandos were
searching, the paper says.

MfD adds that experts are not sure what has happened with the agent
network in Germany today, but it is allegedly defunct as it has "died
off," the paper adds.

"The VKR special designation group was an extremely confidential unit
on which there are no data in the StB central registries... Only a
couple of people knew about the strictly confidential project," military
intelligence expert Milan Macak told MfD.

The agents were regularly invited to military intelligence exercises
with a confidential unit. Only their commanders had a list of the agents
and they kept classified records on them, the paper notes, adding that
notebooks with these records were found in the archives.

The commando groups comprised some 100 people, civilians with general
education in an excellent physical shape who commanded several foreign
languages.

They worked in various civilian posts, but their names must not be
released for security reasons, Macak added.

"If we declassified the files completely, it could harm the Czech
Republic," he said, adding that these former agents naturally do not work
for the current intelligence.

Military intelligence chief Miroslav Krejcik said that the information
on these agents' training had surprised him.

He told MfD that it had never crossed his mind that the former VKR
could have prepared actions abroad.

The military intelligence archives have also revealed that the VKR had
an exceptional position among the Czechoslovak intelligence services
after the Warsaw Pact troops invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968.

"The VKR in a certain way supervised the then military intelligence,
which is not common," Krejcik said.

The VKR gained these privileges since it helped the Soviet army occupy
Czechoslovakia smoothly in 1968 and collaborated with the occupants
afterwards, Krejcik said.

ksl.com is also the Utah radio station, that has live coverage on the shooting last night.

They keep giving numbers of the dead, but the reporters are at different locations, so I am afraid to repeat, 5 or 6 dead and 3 almost dead.

The 17 or 18 year old killer, had a shotgun and pistol.

His car has been located.

There is a Man that I would love to meet, he was the first one shot, as he left the Mall, he returned to the Mall and yelled at folks to take cover, that a mad man was shooting.

He also called his wife and told her to get away, as they had met at the Mall in two cars, so were not parked in the same area, she got the kids in the car and away.

The Man's sister was just on, she says they have removed 75 or 80 shotgun pellets from him and he is expected to recover.

Police do not know why the 18 year old started shooting, 5 + the shooter are dead and 3 are still critical.

There is another Family that I would like to meet.

As a lady was running from the Mall to escape the shooter/danger, a Family that lived only a few houses from the Mall, took her and another 25 people into their Home and offered safety.

The people were all ages and were there for hours, as they watched it on TV and were warm and safe.

As most of the escaping people, ran out without their coats, etc.

You may be able to listen on your computer.

The witness on now, says he walked calmly down the ramp and was not in a hurry, just calmly shot the people.

An off duty Policeman, was the first to exchange fire with the shooter, but it was the Police Department sharpshooters who finally shot him.

Who did you say needs recognition?
By Yoel Marcus
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/825082.html

Negotiations on the establishment of a Palestinian state will
begin February 19, the U.S. State Department spokesman announced
in a laconic tone. On that day, which is next Monday, Condoleezza
Rice will host Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas in Washington for
talks on how to promote a "political horizon." This, Rice said,
will give the Palestinians an idea of what their future state,
alongside Israel, is going to look like.

By laying this "political horizon" (a hatchling of the Bush plan)
on the table, she is aiming for the opposite of violence on the
horizon. Above all, the intention is to end the bloody civil war
between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza, which decreases the chance for
an agreement with Israel on establishing a Palestinian state, the
longer it goes on.

The ghastly pictures from Gaza, which the world watches on
television, once again bring to mind Abba Eban's famous dictum
that the Palestinians have never missed an opportunity to miss an
opportunity. It is the kind of bloodbath that only helps the
Greater Israel fanatics dig in their heels and say no to an
agreement based on withdrawal to the 1967 borders.

In the wake of Bush's request, or arm-twisting, Saudi Arabia has
become a mediator. In return for a billion-dollar donation to the
territories and a possible renewal of global aid, it has produced
a peace plan - not with Israel, but between Hamas and Fatah.
According to the plan, the Mecca agreement, Mahmoud Abbas will
continue to chair the Palestinian Authority and Hamas' Ismael
Haniyeh will remain prime minister. Portfolios have been divvied
up Israel-style, but with one difference: We don't murder one
another, starve our citizens or make life miserable for an entire
people in order to put together a coalition.

Bush is known for his short fuse, and presumably this is not the
baby he was waiting for. The Saudis have pulled a half-baked plan
out of their oven. The missing ingredients include the principles
of the Bush plan and the road map, in which recognizing Israel is
a chief component; putting a stop to terror; and honoring all
previous agreements.

Not that the promises of the Palestinians mean very much: As soon
as Arafat pocketed the Nobel Peace Prize, he launched a wave of
terror, allowing Islamic militants to carry out suicide bombings
in Israel. In the end, he instigated the al-Aqsa Intifada, which
left a heap of bodies on both sides.

But now we are dealing with Hamas, part and parcel of a
bloodthirsty Islamic movement that regards America as the big
Satan and Israel as the little Satan. Hamas has no problem
killing its Arab brothers, and is eager to see Israel's demise.
It can hardly wait for the day when Iran has the bomb and
Ahmadinejad keeps his word.

The Mecca agreement, which has no clause recognizing Israel or on
abstaining from terror, is a farce in the eyes of the U.S.
administration and Israel. The immediate response of the Prime
Minister's Office was that Israel has no intention of recognizing
a Palestinian unity government as long as Hamas refuses to
recognize Israel.

What I can't figure out is what all this "recognition of Israel"
business is about. What kind of obsession is this, getting up
every other day and demanding that our bitter enemies recognize
us? The way things stand today, who needs their recognition?

Israel was one of the first countries in the world to rebel
against imperialism and seek national independence. It was one of
the first countries to join the United Nations: Israel is number
52 out of 190 countries that belong today. On May 10, 1949, MK
David Hacohen unfurled the Israeli flag over the building then
housing the UN. This insistence on being recognized, when Israel
was one of the first states to be born after World War II, is
plain masochism.

The State of Israel does not need recognition. It is already
recognized as one of the wonders of the world - by the very dint
of its existence, after seven Arab countries tried to wipe it off
the map, by what it has managed to create, by what it has
accomplished in the span of 59 years.

Israel is a political and geopolitical fact, as well as a
household name. If there is anyone who needs recognition, it is
not Israel but the Palestinians, who will need ours, if they ever
have the brains to adopt the UN resolution passed 60 years ago
and get around to establishing a state of their own.

France blocking plan for EU code on arms exports

http://euobserver.com/24/23296?rss_rk=1

France blocking plan for EU code on arms exports
18.01.2007 - 17:43 CET | By Andrew Rettman
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - France is continuing to block a new EU code of
conduct on arms exports until member states give the green light to
start selling weapons to China, despite MEPs and the 2006 Finnish EU
presidency's efforts to revive the project.

The new legally-binding code - drafted in June 2005 - is designed to
replace an existing voluntary code dating back to 1998, adding fresh
clauses on control of arms brokers and shipment of weapons via third
countries to tackle changes in the modern arms business.

A huge majority of MEPs on Wednesday (17 January) supported a call by
Spanish green deputy Raul Romeva to pull the code out of the deep
freeze, following a similar appeal by the then Finnish EU presidency at
a lunch of EU foreign ministers in Brussels in December.

But France - Europe's biggest arms exporter - says the code can only go
ahead if the EU agrees to review an arms embargo on China, which was
imposed after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre and remains in force
until Beijing takes steps toward EU human rights norms.

"Things have changed a lot since Tiananmen Square and China is now one
of the most visited countries by EU politicians. We do not consider
China to be in the same group as other states that have arms embargoes
such as Burma or in Central Asia," a French diplomat said.

"We need to have a coherent policy on China and on arms. We have to put
our relations in compliance with the strategic level of partnership
that
we want to have with China," he added, with some three other unnamed EU
states falling in behind the French position.

Finnish diplomats and MEPs see the French stance as classic EU
political
horse-trading however, saying that there is no logical linkage between
agreeing a general set of principles and the particular case of
Beijing.

"It's a purely political link - most people don't see the connection,"
a
Finnish official said. "This is an important issue: we need to
reinforce
our rules if the EU is going to play a leading role in pushing for an
international agreement at UN level."

'Narrow commercial interests'
"It is unacceptable that a handful of member states...can use narrow
commercial interests to block EU arms export rules," Mr Romeva stated,
adding that EU arms or arms components currently turn up in conflict
hot-spots such as Sierra Leone, Sudan and Somalia.

One problem is the flow of cheap, small arms from some new EU states
such as Romania and Bulgaria or EU-hopeful states such as Serbia, with
western manufacturers in Germany or Austria making high-end guns which
are too expensive for most buyers in Africa.

"This code could be valuable for some of the new member states," the
head of the UK's Defence Manufacturers Association, major general Alan
Sharman, said. "It could help level the playing field in Europe with
some countries that are rather less scrupulous [than the UK]."

Stale-mate
The EU's top diplomat Javier Solana on Wednesday said the new code
"would be an important step forward if in the end it can be achieved,"
but there seems to be little pressure in the near future for France to
back down on its China link.

Mr Romeva will probably not revisit the topic until 2008. Finland will
not hold the EU chair until 2020 and the German EU presidency did not
put the issue in its list of 2007 priorities, with defence minister
Franz Josef Jung talking vaguely about "non-proliferation" when asked
on
the code by EUobserver.

"I don't see any interest for Germany to do something about this
today,"
an EU official said, with any EU decisions on the arms industry
requiring consensus by all 27 members in a sensitive sector where EU
colleagues don't like to tread on each other's toes.

Here's an old article from Anna Politkovskaya that could probably hold true for anyone who has been in court:

Three lawsuits thrown out of court. 58 more victims in line for humiliation

Why are judges so rude to us, when we support them with our taxes?

Novaya Gazeta

Anna Politkovskaya, January 27th, 2003

Legal protocol is a stern thing with pretensions of objectivity. Sort of. When, however, this protocol falls into even a few places during the court session – under the dictation of the judge: “Write this, don’t write that”, as happened during the last installment of the ‘Nord-Ost’ courts, then one needs to make some notes outside the protocol, notes whose aim is to resurrect the picture of our life.

“Karpov, be seated! I told you!”

“I would also like to speak….”

“Sit down! You missed the stage for examining documents…”

“No one sent me a notice!”

“You missed it. Sit down! Or I will have you removed!”

“I wish to enter…”

“I won’t accept anything!”

Decent gentlemen, as in well known, do not try to settle scores with ladies, and so he submits. But she does not quiet down:

“Karpov, don’t raise your hand again!”

“I wish to finally have my rights explained to me!”

“Nothing will be explained to you!”

The active characters in the play:

He is Sergey Karpov, the father of Alexandra Karpova, who was killed during the terrorist liquidation operation in the building on Dubrovka. He is now a plaintiff, one of the 61 appealing to the capital’s Tverskoy inter-municipal court with a request seeking damages from the Moscow city government for moral injury in connection with the circumstances of the cause of their grief. Sergey is already not a young man, but she is lecturing to him as if he was a fifth grader.

She is a lady in a cloak.

The hall, which has not seen a good sweeping in a long time, is full of people. The journalists who have been forbidden to use Dictaphones (and why? What government secrets are they protecting here?). The victims with their battered souls – it is a bit frightening to speak with them, because they almost immediately burst into tears. Their relatives and friends have come to support them if they should faint or have heart problems. The lady in the cloak charges the atmosphere to the hundredth degree with rudeness.

“Khramtsova V. I., Khramtsova I. F., Khramtsov! You have some remarks to enter? No?” She simply calls all the plaintiffs this way: “V.I.”, “I.F.”, “T.I.”… Perhaps she is semiliterate, she can only read large letters?

“There are remarks,” responds a tall, thin young man.

“Khramtsov! Speak!” with a tone like ‘here are your alms, now shut up’.

Alexander Khramtsov, who buried his father, a trumpet player in the ‘Nord-Ost’ orchestra, begins, but almost immediately there are tears in his voice:

“My papa traveled the whole world with orchestras and shows. He represented our country and city. It is a loss that can never be made up. Do you really not feel it? It was you who let in the terrorists! They were strolling around here without a care in the world! Yes, and you still haven’t answered for the assault. But why did they take 400 people to Hospital #13, when there were only 50 staff, and couldn’t help everyone? They died before they be helped…”

The lady in the cloak lazily shuffles papers from place to place, in order to do something to kill time. She is bored and sad, and now and then looks out the window.

But Alexander continues. Naturally, turning to the three defendants at a side table, these representatives of ‘the city’, jurists from the government and finance department. Where else can he look? Not at the judge who averts her gaze.

“Why didn’t they bring in at least some interns? Maybe just for the buses? They could have looked after our loved ones while they were being taken to the hospitals.”

“Khramtsov!” the lady interrupts, catching the plaintiff’s eye. “Where are you looking? You have to look at me!”

“Alright…” Alexander turns his head back in the direction of the judge’s chair. “But they drove off, and they suffocated… They drove off, and they suffocated…”

Alex cries.

Strictly speaking, who is this Judge Gorbacheva, who practices at the Tverskoy inter-municipal court in Moscow?

The answer would be kind of simple: she is a representative of one of the branches of our government, whom we support with the taxes we pay to the treasury. That is, the judge lives exclusively on our dime. We pay for her professional services; she is not paying us. Why then has she no respect for the ones who pay her? And we pay Judge Gorbacheva who, instead of showing gratitude and respect, insults us… How has she takes it into her head to, and when she takes it into her head. It all depends on her mood.

Legal culture in our country does not exist; it is like the naked king’s clothes. In truth it is the regime’s court. No one has any illusions, not even little ones: alright, judge, you belong to those who believe that they support us, and that it is not we, the citizenry, who support them, and under fear of loss of rank and privileges you cannot do anything for the unfortunate victims but refuse every one of their demands without exception… All right, let it be so… Let us assume so…

But why then do you have to be so rude? So mocking? Insulting? To beat those who are almost beat to death?

After the decision was made to deny the plaintiffs and the tongue-twister reading made by Citizen Gorbacheva was all in the past and everyone had left the court, only the defendants were left: Yuri Viktorovich Bulgakov - the head of the legal department for the Moscow city finance department, Andrey Evgenevich Rastorguev and Marat Sharipovich Gafurov – counselors from the capital’s rights directorate.

“Well, should we go celebrate?” slipped from a tongue.

“No,” all three suddenly said at once. “We are people. We understand it all… It’s a scandal how our government treats them.”

“How is that? You?”

They fall silent. The Moscow evening has taken us into its dark arms. Some head to warm houses, full of the laughter of relatives and the love of friends. Others go to hollow apartments, forever made empty by October 23rd.

Killer identified as 18-year-old Solejman Talovic

The 18-year-old man who shot and killed at least five people Monday night at Trolley Square has been identified as Solejman Talovic, a Bosnian refugee who lived in Salt Lake City.

Little additional information was released about Talovic.

The Bosnian community, which numbers about 3,000 in Utah, planned a press conference later this afternoon.

Talovic parked his car in the west parking lot and walked into the mall, encountering two people, whom he shot. Then he walked further into the mall and shot a woman, said Police Chief Chris Burbank.

He then walked to a gift shop and shot five people. He shot several other people before he was gunned down by an off-duty Ogden police officer assisted by four Salt Lake City police officers, Burbank said. (snip)

Telesur journalist is in Venezuela, Colombian intelligence suspects

Freddy Mun~oz, a correspondent of South-American TV network Telesur,
left Colombia, reported Monday a Colombian security agency source.

According to the spokesman, the reporter sought refuge in Venezuela,
where Telesur head offices are located, Reuters noted.

The version of the security agent was made known after the disclosure
of a picture of the journalist holding a rifle and in combat uniform,
next to a fugitive rebel chief. This would be a new evidence of the
reporter's alleged links with the guerrilla, according to the Attorney
General Office.

"The information and the evidence we have is that Mr. Freddy Mun~oz, a
journalist working with Telesur, left the country following a release
order. We have sought him, but he does not show up," said the spokesman,
who asked for anonymity.

Mun~oz, 36, faces charges for rebellion and terrorism due to his
presumed involvement in attacks on electric power turrets by the Colombian
Revolutionary Armed Forces (Farc) in 2002, in northern Colombia.

Legal culture in our country does not exist; it is like the naked king’s clothes. In truth it is the regime’s court. No one has any illusions, not even little ones: alright, judge, you belong to those who believe that they support us, and that it is not we, the citizenry, who support them, and under fear of loss of rank and privileges you cannot do anything for the unfortunate victims but refuse every one of their demands without exception… All right, let it be so… Let us assume so…
<<<

And pretty much the same is happening here.

Was sure easy to import it to us.

Anna could paint a picture with words, she is a loss that we should not have had.

People are still being arrested for giving her honor, are the leaders afraid of her even in death.

I would think that if one appears at a Memorial for Anna, it would put you on the list of 'troublemakers'.

Thanks for posting this, it fits well with what I am reading today, about Chechnya.

Bosnian refugee who lived in Salt Lake City<<<

I have to say it................"I told you so"...............

All these drive by shootings are not normal, too many of them are for no reason.

There is no way that 4 year old kids are gang related.

Go to any news site in America read of several driveby shootings.

One of the witnesses said that the cool way that the killer was acting, reminded him of the Columbine School massacre in Colorado.

Fox radio news a last hour, said the killer had a backpack full of bullets and that it was only the fast action by the off duty Policeman that kept him from killing more people.

It is out now, what next?

Salem schools locked down after gun threats
By Jason Bergreen
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 02/13/2007 01:08:59 PM MST

Posted: 1:09 PM- Less than 24 hours after a gunman killed five people and wounded four others at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City, a man in Salem called the local post office and threatened to open fire on a school Tuesday morning.

The Salem post office received the anonymous call just before 8 a.m., Salem police reported.

Mt. Loafer, Foothills and Salem elementary schools were placed on lockdown around 9 a.m.. said Nebo School District spokeswoman Lana Hiskey.

Salem police reported that the threat may be a hoax but they are taking it "very seriously." Hiskey said that several police officers are posted outside each school and parents have been notified of the threat.

Classes were still functioning normally, but the doors to each classroom were locked and students will eat and have recess indoors, Hiskey said.

Some parents have picked up their children at school and taken them home, while others have just come to check on them and then left, Hiskey said.

Because of the threat, about 1,800 students are affected by the lockdown. "This has never happened in Salem," Hiskey said.

The lockdown is expected to continue through the remainder of the school day Tuesday.

Default the profile
Let me post a profile of the gunman:

1) He will be good at computers, and will have a myspace account or something similar(though that evidence has likely already been pulled).

2) He will likely have been 'treated' by a shrink at some point, and will probably have been taking a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(ssri) and/or Ritalin.

3) He will have occult links, likely he will have dabbled in satanism.

4) He may have been active in a group that played live-action role playing games(LARPs), especially one called 'the vampire masquerade.'

5) There is a good chance he has a police record, and will have been no stranger to the cops in his locale.

6) He will have been depressed lately, with strange, sudden changes in mood noticed by his social group.

7) He will have been an avid player of first-person-shooter video games.

8) Literature will be found in his room that refers to the Columbine killers and/or Charles Manson. His choice of music will tend toward heavy metal, especially black/death metal.

9) Extra weaponry-guns, ammo, pipe bombs, knives, swords-will be found in his vehicle and at his domicile. He will be known as someone fascinated with guns and/or knives.

10) One of his parents will be getting a pay/pension check from a local, state, or federal agency, either in a military/police job or from the local school district.

Islamic Jihad warns US

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad on Tuesday threatened to retaliate against the United States if it tried to capture its Damascus-based leader, Dr. Ramadan Abdullah Mohammad Shallah.

On Monday, Washington announced that they would offer a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of Shallah. The same amount was also offered for a member of Lebanese Hizbullah, Mohammed Ali Hamadei. The alleged Lebanese Hizbullah member took part in the 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847 that resulted in the killing of U.S. sailor Robert Stethem.
