I remember watching the Johnny Carson show one night back in the '70s, where Joan Rivers was doing a standup routine. She had the audience absolutely roaring with laughter, until the point where she said, "I'm so ugly that when I was born my mother took one look at me and demanded an abortion." A dead, stony silence immediately ensued.

Yes, some things are just intrinsically not funny. I would say abortion and serial murders are two of those things.
