During Clinton's term, we had people on FR who swore the UN was building camps to warehouse people after Clinton declared "marshall" law because of Y2K and arrested all the gun-owners/Christians/conservatives in the country. Black Helicopters were circling their houses, watching them because they criticized the government.
Read some of the Murrow building stuff.
I believe we don't always get the whole truth from government but it's not because they want to imprison or kill us all. The real reasons are much more mundane.
One would be to cover up incompetence. Another is for national security reasons and a third would be to prevent exposure of ongoing investigations.

Well, at least imagination is still alive and kicking. I agree with Post #45 cripplecreek, I really do not believe we get the whole truth all the time, but for the reasons stated in #45. The problem with these folks is they have no coherent arguments. Just ramblings that don't manage to cover all aspects of the day in question.
That's a funny thing to think about. The one's I most believe are legit are the ones displaying such a self-centered point of view that it would be hard to parody.
They seem to be absolutely in shock that anyone could ever disagree with them.
Minor point, but how do we know it was a DUer? I don't think we should assume that every wacky leftist hangs out on DU. When I visit the DU site for laughs, I get a bit testy when they call every conservative they meet a "freeper."

A book out titled Triple Crossed says, in essence, that is what led to all the terror problems we have today. Government incompetence, and the need to cover it up to CYA. The author is a host (I think) on CoasttoCoast and was being interviewed, and people were calling in with these grand conspiracy theories, and he would shoot each down and saying that there doesn't need to be a conspiracy when the government is so inept.
Of course, maybe he was a plant from the government.
