Vanity:What do you do if you discover you're dating an ultra-liberal conspiracy believer?
Me ^ | 11/16/06 | Darkwolf377

Some of you have been emailing me and enjoying my trials as I search for love in Blue Boston. I'm a 42-year-old non-religious Republican, anti-abortion, pro-W, etc. and the pickings are slim. But I managed to meet a fantastic woman, perfect for me in every way--I work in social services and am a fiction writer, and she is into all that stuff, and we just click as I have with no woman since my last relationships broke up.

I just had a discussion with her in which she asked about my politics. I have a No Political Discussions With Liberal Friends policy, and I thought it would suit this relationship. I was right. After I talked a little about my beliefs, she went on a tirade about how Bush caused 9/11, how the WTC was blown up by demolition charges, how Bush is a certifiable moron, and we've killed hundreds of thousands for no good reason, and on and on and on. I sat there, nodding, saying nothing.

This just happened this afternoon, and I'm kinda numb. We have only just started dating but we connect on many levels, but politics is SUCH an important part of my life that this is like a virus introduced into the relationship.

Any comments?

Keep looking. I remember once my daughter was dating (very briefly) a guy who worked for the Clinton administration, until she found out that the guy was heading Clinton's version of the Peace Corps (Was it called Young America? Something like that.) Anyway she immediately broke it off. She said she just couldn't deal with that. She wasn't that hard up.

Your opinions welcome. What should I do?

Take megadoses of Viagra to minimize conversation. Good luck.

I am completely Pro-Life.

I do think people of different political persuasions can be married. My wife and I share a similar religion (we are both orthodox Catholics), however, her inclination is to be more of a Democrat/socialist politically, although I don't believe she's voted for anything other than Republican or Constitution party for more than 10 years now. However, I do think you need to find out if this woman is pro-life. If one day you two discover the child she's carrying is less than perfect in the world's eyes - i.e. Downs, Spina Bifida, etc. - it will ruin your relationship if she decides to kill your child. And don't kid yourself, ultimately, that decision will be hers, not yours, to make.

Consider this. Could you love a woman who couldn't love your child?

IF she actually talks rather than rants then there should be no problem. Take each theory one by one and show the holes in them. If she won't listen make her explain exactly how tons of explosives could have been taken into the building without anyone knowing about them, how they could have been left around without anyone seeing them, where the wires were, how anyone as "dumb" as Bush could have pulled this off, ask if she had heard of Operation Bojinka, Osama's declaration of war upon the US when Clinton was president. Have her read some of the Treason Media's warning all during the 90s of what could happen should OBL and Saddam form a closer alligance. It was all laid out and echoed by the RATS until Bush decided to do something about it.

But best of all if Bush is such an idiot what does that say about the party he beat TWICE.

My husband and I are both conservatives, but we have different ways of getting to the same conclusions at times. I'm religious and he isn't. It's not a bad thing, it's all about what you can live with. If she's not part of the tin foil hat crowd, then why not go for it?

Just ask how she feels about WalMart. If she can shop at WalMart and doesn't hate anyone who would do the same, then she's okay. It's someone you can have a reasonable conversation with. You might not agree with everything, but you know she's definitely not in the Moonbat club. If she starts going off about how WalMart exploits its workers and how it's evil because they don't unionize, wish her well and move on with your life.

It's amazing how much power the phrase "I like WalMart" has on a lib. Good luck to you.

Be honest with her as she sounds like she is worth the effort. Let her know that you read a lot and to you she sounds confused and extreme and that is all. Don't argue with her. See what her reaction is and then go from there. If her ego is as big as Nebraska, she will ditch you and insult you. If she is a good person and respects you, she will say something self effacing. Might as well find out now if she is a man hating attack dog or not. Good luck, darkwolf!

I've been married to a liberal for 22 years. Not a moonbat, though. I probably would have had a really hard time if he believed in the 9/11 conspiracies or any of that crap. I actually like not living in an echo chamber with somebody who thinks exactly like I do. We challenge each other and every once in a while we have even changed each other's mind on an issue. But we really don't spend much time talking about politics. Presidential election seasons are a little hard, but they don't last long.

Your girlfriend might not be the fun-loving person you are so attracted to if she were conservative, you never know. You should think hard about how you felt when you first heard her views, and then decide if you can stand that feeling every once in a while for the rest of your life. Sounds like you and she are an awfully good match otherwise, and that is nothing to sneer at. My husband and I are too, and we knew it right away. We knew our political differences when we were introduced, but it was never a problem. You can be a soulmate with someone who does not share your political views.

What is interesting about my marriage is that when we started we were different religions and we both converted. Politics is nothing compared to changing religions!

very intelligent and funny, and has her own business

Sounds like you want to keep her so here's what you do. Tell her if she's successful in business the Democrats will want to tax her more and waste her money. She's probably gotten her lib conspiracy theories from one of the phonies like Michael Moore or Bill Maher, etc. Show how they claim to want to pay higher taxes but do everything they can to pay the lowest possible taxes ( so therefore they are obviously liars and hypocrites).
Talk to her logically on other points. Wouldn't she use a gun to save her own life? If she is smart, then show her the logic of conservative thinking . Then try to dissuade her from conspiracy lunacy by Popular Mechanics articles and such.

I'd have to ask how old she is and even then I wouldn't deign to give you a serious answer. My first thought was to just shoot her, not really but if she really believes the conspiracy I certainly think I'd run as fast as possible.

OTOH, she could live and work in a place where she has been completely indoctrinated and you could spend some time snapping her out of it. In the end, it is up to you and what you can stand but if she is against all of your core values then there isn't anything there for the long run when the rush wears off. I've been married 35 yrs and if you aren't rowing in the same direction over 50 percent of the time you will go backwards.

Did you ask her what she thinks about Jon Carry and Ted Swimmer Kennedy? THAT one thing will determine whether you can stay with her. Picture yourself going through an election with her, or even how it's going to be with the RATS in power the next couple of years.

Have you tried looking for a conservative lady here on FR? There's a lot of single women here who share your political views. Personally, I NEVER even date a liberal man. A lot of things can destroy a relationship, but nothing as fast as political differences can. The fact that you just sat there and let her "go on and on and on" without telling her to shut up, tells me you will be henpecked by this chick from here on out. LOL My advice: ....... run as far and as fast as you can. ;o)

A hot biker chick--not the real kind who are sometimes disappointing, but the Hollywood kind; long legs, great measurements, long hair, great eyes; also she's confident without being bitchy, very intelligent and funny, and has her own business. I mean, she's so hot I keep pinching myself (figuratively) because I can't believe she's fallen so hard for me.

You know, earlier in this thread I advised you to ditch this gal.I still think you should but I've decided that,as a favor to you,I'll take her off your hands.

I'm willing to do the Pike,128,3,495 or any other road in the state to see her.

On our first date,I'll take her down to Lower Manhattan and explain to her exactly how a 100 ton airplane carrying 50,000 gallons of jet fuel that burns red hot for an hour can weaken the already damaged steel *just* enough to cause it to buckle under the weight of the 20 floors above it *and* the 100 ton aircraft.

Problem solved.

Very same thing happened to all 4 of my grown children. All of them a-political then, all of them Republicans, now. My DIL came from liberal Milwaukee but they moved here to Tennessee to raise their son in a simpler environment. Once she got here, she started listening to local radio and Rush came on and she would keep listening. My middle son works for my daughters husband who is conservative and they would listen to an hour of Rush on their lunch break. Anyway all 4 of them are conservatives, now.

Run away, run away, RUN AWAY from this woman as fast as you can!

If she is THIS stupid and crazy, there IS no hope at all.

Politics is just about POLITICS, it is view; how we see the world and our own lives. Obviously, no matter how many interest you initially thought that you share, deep down, you don't.

I'm sorry that you are lonely, but this relationship is doomed; utterly and completely DOOMED!

if politics matters so much to you in a relationship, find a nice Italian girl (preferably from a catholic school) and move on!
