Draft Mark Sanford for President in 2008
Petition Online ^ | 11/11/06 | NewLand

Posted on 11/11/2006 6:24:57 AM PST by NewLand

To: South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford

In the face of soaring deficits and skyrocketing federal spending, America needs a leader who can say "NO!" to Washington tax-and-spenders.

During his six years in Congress, Mark Sanford earned straight "A" ratings from the National Taxpayers Union. When he was elected Governor of South Carolina, he cut taxes by a third and convinced the legislature to pay off 90% of the state's debt.

He even vetoed parts of his own party's budget, saying there was simply too much unnecessary spending. When the legislature overrode 105 of his 106 line-item vetoes, he protested by entering the capital building with two squeeling piglets under his arms, demanding to know why there was enough money for pork-barrel spending but not enough to pay the remainder of the state's debt.

Meanwhile, George W. Bush, as of July 2004, has not used his veto power even once. He has rubber-stamped every pork-laden bill sent to him by his Republican Congress. He has increased federal discretionary spending by 24% and has increased the federal deficit by about 900% since he took office. Compare this to Governor Sanford, who successfully controlled state government growth to 1% and who slashed deficits by 90%.

Sanford holds true to Republican principles on other issues, as well. While President Bush was echoing John Kerry and Al Gore's position on background checks at gun shows, Sanford was fighting them vigorously in Congress. While President Bush was parroting Kerry's desire to see the assault weapons ban renewed, Sanford was helping lead the fight against unconstitutional gun bans. While Bush promised to sign most gun bills that land on his desk, Sanford was signing a repeal of his state's one-gun-a-month law, making South Carolina a much friendlier place to gun owners and collectors. His time in Congress earned him an "A" rating from both the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of America. He was endorsed by the "We Vote Pro-Life" Political Action Committee and won praises from the American Conservative Union as the "Most Conservative Governor in America."

Therefore, we, the undersigned, strongly urge and implore Governor Sanford to consider a Presidential run in 2008 on a platform of fiscal conservatism, responsible government, and the preservation of Constitutional rights.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

The Republicans were so ticked off at Sanford they campaigned with the Democrats to unseat him when he ran for re-election. In a year when the national mood was Democratic, he was re-elected in South Carolina with 55% of the vote, the first Governor to be re-elected since Caroll Campbell.

Unelectable.

Yep. Can't win the presidency without winning either Ohio or Pennsylvania.

EVERY candidate people think of has to meet that requirement.

And a Southern Republican CAN'T lead the ticket. You need someone that on an emotional and impressionistic level is as FAR from GWB as possible.

As weird as it sounds, you can't run anyone with even the hint of an accent that's vaguely southern leading the ticket.

You're probably right. He has enemies in the party who don't like his tamping down on pork, even if its for their own good.

The piglets display was funny and effective. The GOP Legislature in South Carolina contracted the same disease that killed the GOP Congress.

I don't understand that.

Where is the documentation that demonstrates the point?

A Southerner CAN win. I think Sanford can endear himself to conservatives and he has a good record of accomplishments in his home state. Whether the GOP wants to nominate a real Reaganite conservative is an open question.

People are getting WAY too specific-issue focused.

The majority of people vote for President based on vague emotional and personal impressions and concerns.

A large part of whether someone gets voted for, for President is whether people want to see the face of that person constantly on the news for the next four years.

I can't provide you with a specific psychological study, but you have to win Ohio or Pennsylvania to win the Presidency in 2008, and you're not going to win either state with a Republican from South Carolina leading the ticket - of this, I'm 100% sure. If you want Sanford as VP, be my guest.

Well we are going to have to figure out a way to win the presidency without Ohio or Pennsylvania because they aren't Republican states anymore.

I think this election just threw the door wide open for a strong, competent, fiscally conservative governor like Mark Sanford or Tim Pawlenty. Voters said they are sick of Washington pork-barrel politics and government incompetence. Put Sanford out there with a strong foreign-policy guy like Rick Santorum and you will get 70% turnout of Republicans, evangelicals, gun owners, and fiscally conservative Democrats. This ticket would beat Clinton/Obama like a drum.

You think the guy has an inability to connect with the base? Why the anti-Southern comments? Let's face it, if you're looking for a squeaky clean presidential candidate, he won't exist. The Drive Bys/MSM will make sure ANY GOP nominee has baggage.

I have no doubt a real Reaganite conservative can win in America. A lot of conservatives seem to be afraid of their own shadow and worried as to whether the Left will like our guy. They won't and never will like a Republican. That's a fact of life.

I don't know who I support for president at this stage. The candidates should be:

McCain
Giuliani
Brownback
Romney
Frist
Sanford
Huckabee
Hunter
Tancredo

I'm willing to listen to all of them, even McCain and Giuliani.

I'd never vote for McCain. He's a backstabbing weasel. As for the rest, Guiliani is a social liberal but I'm not sure if he's a fiscal conservative. If we're looking for a conservative I'd go for principle ahead of electability. The latter brought us Bush and I don't think Republicans are eager to nominate another Big Government Republican in 2008.

Pretty good reasoning - I am trying to remember, didn't we elect some former govs with accents - Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Carter spring to mind..or maybe it was just my imagination...

You think the guy has an inability to connect with the base? Why the anti-Southern comments?

See, it boggles my mind that people can't even begin to comprehend the idea of how OTHER PEOPLE would view a candidate - which leads to people not even understanding how Katherine Harris was a hopeless candidate, and people running around spouting crack-smoking lunacy like Gingrich or Tancredo for President, etc.

Sanford for President isn't THAT SILLY, but i'm not being "anti-Southern" by stating my opinion that after 8 years of GWB people in the upper Midwest and Northeast really are not going to go for another Southern Governor for President. It's my opinion of how millions of OTHER people would view Sanford, not my personal judgement of Sanford.

People need to go beyond "I think _____ would be a good President!" to "I think ______ would be voted for my millions of people that may have different views and backgrounds from me, and thus COULD be President."
