UPDATE: Professor Ammons is not arrested. Miscommunication. However, 107 deaf protesters are arrested at Gallaudet University so far. More vans are brought in by DC police. Cold temperature is taking a toll on some protesters. Hyperthermia? Ambulance on scene.
Many Deaf students, faculty members, staff and alumni throws fit over 1st deaf woman to become the 9th president at Gallaudet University by mostly deaf Board of Trustees early this May. Protest has been simmering since May and exploded last week almost 9 days ago. And..

Now, it's up to 120 arrests.
Hearing that many alumni is coming in to get themselves arrested, too.
So, if I understand this correctly, the deaf are protesting a deaf person being elected president by the deaf board of trustees????
Confused and intrigued.
"I said disperse! Now!" "L.T., that crowd ain't movin'. I've told them three times to disperse and they won't even look in my direction when I yell at them." "fire the tear gas, Sarge, and release the dogs."
Protesting what why? I got who when where.
Ditto.
127 arrested so far.....
WHY are they upset?
Oooh......!
DailyKos is in on this.

131 arrests so far....still growing...I think the guys at DailyKos are even more confused about why deaf protesters are having an aneurysm over the 1st deaf woman selected to be the 9th president of Gallaudet University, world's only institution for deaf and hard of hearing students, that was selected by a mostly deaf board of trustees.
S..u..r..r..e..a..l.
They are protesting because the new president isn't deaf enough, or to say it another way, the new president was born deaf but grew up learning to speak and did not learn sign language.
These are liberal protestors: You WILL deal with your physical handicap the way WE want you to deal with it. Or else you are not fit to be among us.
did not learn sign language.
This is a political issue among the deaf. They are very much against implants. Two deaf lesbians wanted a deaf baby.
That's just sick.
I've read that at least some deaf people say that,if given the chance, they would reject treatment that might give them (or restore to them) the ability to hear.
This,IMO,can only mean that they've become accustomed to being seen as victims and that they somehow approve of that status.
Sick,sick,sick...IMO.
Round two....coming up in 50 minutes.
A Poll: Should arrested protesters at Gallaudet University be expelled?
http://kokonutpundits.blogspot.com/2006/10/should-arrested-protesters-be-expelled.html
She does sign, now but she did not grow up signing. I'm a parent of a deaf kid and nobody knows what they are protesting about.
This is not about implants. There are students at Gally with implants and there are more and more deaf children getting them, who have been raised using ASL - like my daughter. Times are changing and they are becoming more accepted.
No, that's not really correct.
Many deaf people who sign ONLY do not want the extra added input. When you have grown up deaf, and are used to the quiet, the sounds that the implant or even a hearing aid brings can be disconcerting. It has nothing to do with being a victim. I would hardly call deaf adults who are not implanted victims. When I am working on speech with my daughter, she can't have extra noise around her because she can't concentrate. Whereas you and I have learned to tune OUT noise.
You are very wrong on that. They do not consider themselves to be "victims" at all. But, because society tries to tell them they are 'abnormal', then society deals with them as if they are victims.
My mother (age 80) is deaf, reads lips, speaks and learned sign at age 38 to work with deaf kids. She has many deaf friens, who very much disagree with this very militant group of deaf people who feel that they are perfectly normal they just do not hear.
