When asked if the charge is surfacing now is the result of blantant political partisanship, the former friend responsed with "I know you are, but what am I?"

We are in 100% agreement on the absurdity of this claim. People have always remarked that I have a knack for remembering names and telephone numbers...but for me to claim I can recall specific dialogue and actual context decades later would be considered outrageous. Similarly, this technique has simply got to backfire on them.
