Seems to me that THIS is the wave of the future, not bloatware consuming gigabytes of hard drive space.

Why don't you just burn a Knoppix Linux copy? It will fit on 1 CD and you don't have to reconfigure the boot drive.

Set up my PC's CMOS to boot first from "USB-HDD". Inserted the flash drive and rebooted -- and the drive was ignored in favor of Windows XP.

Well, I can boot Xenix from an 8" floppy and run a 20 million line BASIC version of DOOM III on it...does that count? ;)

AFAIK, Slax is the most reliable for booting viay USB key.
I haven't had the space to try it myself--and I can't boot off USB on my POS pee-cee...
Speaking of which, question for you: do you know how to connect a Windows NX client to a Linux server?
What's making this difficult is that my Linux box is acting like the server--and it's behind the router.
I've tried forwarding ports 22 tcp and udp--still can't connect outside my LAN.
It'd be nice--especially considering I have an hour commute to school every day.

No luck with that, but I was able to take advantage of a Kentucky Fried Chicken 7 piece original dark meat special for $4.99!

I believe DSL (Damn Small Linux), Knoppix, and Slax will boot from a USB flash drive. DSL is about 60 MB (which means it will boot from a USB flash memory device with at least 64 MB...you can even boot it from a Sony PSP in USB mode), not sure about Knoppix, and Slax is around 200 MB (so you can boot it from a Sony PSP in USB mode if your memory card is at least 256 MB).

(vanity) Anyone successfully gotten a version of Linux to boot from a USB flash drive? I have a copy of Knoppix I keep on a 1GB USB drive.
