A Review of Why We Are In Iraq, Part I
From Sea to Shining Sea ^ | 8/27/06 | Purple Mountains

Although the mainstream press likes to portray our President as ‘not too bright’, I would submit that he understands what the civilized world is facing, and what must be done to save it, better than any journalist or academic does, and that his rationales for a pre-emptive strike into Iraq continue to make excellent geo-political sense – even as we struggle to contain the violence that is endemic to the entire region.

The invasion itself will probably be debated forever and will be highly politicized - as everything else is. But I think one stark reality faces us now.

To cut-and-run, or announce some sort of time-table for a withdraw will be disastrous. We should have an exit strategy: VICTORY.

The terrorists are watching this conflict carefully. They saw us do nothing after the first World Trade Center bombing; nothing after the embassies were bombed in Africa; Bin Laden himself said that our cut-and-run in Somalia proved to him that we were a "weak horse". We did nothing after the USS Cole was attacked.

Iran is probably the closest observer. If we demonstrate again that we're quitters who won't finish a job and abandon democracy in Iraq - it will greatly encourage them. Right now they're laughing at us as we give them more time to complete their nuclear arsenal by pissing away precious time in the totally dysfunctional UN.

The worse possible scenario is us voluntarily presenting the world and the terrorists with another "defeat".
