Yesterday I heard a radio interview on the NPR show "Marketplace," where they were talking to a guy from the American Enterprise Institute about welfare reform. He is supportive, but they portrayed his statement about large numbers of the welfare recipients moving off the rolls and moving in with family as if it were a horrible tragedy, or as if welfare moms living in crappy public housing somehow have it way better than a single mother living with her Mom and Dad.
I said to my kids, "Let's have a teachable moment. What if Jetgirl (sorry, never use my kids' real names online) here grew up and got married, but when she got pregnant her husband freaked out and left her? And what if she asked to move back in with your Mom and I? Should I go to the other people on our block and say, Give me some grocery money right now. It's not a loan or a donation, it's required. Give me money right now because my daughter needs your help and you're going to help her and like it. These are extra mouths to feed, and it's not my problem, it's yours. Would that be OK?"
Of course, my kids said "No."
"Would it be anything like them giving it of their own free will to charity?"
"No."
"Well, that's what the state does. They say, 'gimme that or else,' and then call it charity. And for Pete's sake, why should anyone expect to depend on strangers forced to do it instead of depending on their family? That's nuts."
Just a little item from the Dad lecture series...But seriously, no single effort of government has robbed more from the taxpayers than the "War on Poverty," and no single government program has had a worse effect. But is there any doubt that the DUmmies and KOkos would expand it if they had power, and then still blame the evil Republicans for the resulting disaster?

I guess they believe they can win the war on terror all by their lonesome (or "negotiate a peace") and thus need to dispense with Conservatives first because they would not have the support AFTER we won the WOT (or at least brought Iraq to a stable democratic conclusion). They team with the enemy to unseat the administration.

- that the Bush administration has been spying on political enemies, the Republicans have no good responses. Never mind that they will say, "Well, we don't do that." And we'll say, "Why are you spying on political enemies?" And they'll say, "We don't spy on political enemies."
I'm rubber you're glue...whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you! At least they'd appeal to the 2 year old voter (who actually probably does vote democrat along with her long departed great-great grandmother).
And we'll say, "We know you're spying on political enemies - just like Nixon," and they'll have nowhere to go. And so we repeat that meme, louder and more often: JUST LIKE NIXON. And again, they'll have nowhere to go with that - there's no good response that won't raise more questions and add more validity to the charge.

There is no way they can defend against a relentless onslaught of that, unless they're willing to open up the NSA program (and every freaking other illegal COINTELPRO program that they're running) to scrutiny. Which they're not.
Defend against it? Hell, I want to ENCOURAGE you to do this. Aside from the fact that you'll look like a raving, neutered idiot without any REAL ideas, even the most "caveman-like" among us (in your eyes that's everyone who doesn't agree with you, which is a big part of your problem...but that's another nuanced subject) want proof.
