Last Sunday I was watching CBS' morning program which is, strangely enough, titled, "Sunday Morning." Hosted by Charles Osgood, the show is primarily light-hearted with a touch of intellectual snobbery that, at times, can alienate a viewer--except, that is, if you do all of your shopping on Madison Avenue and believe a fun evening includes a visit through an art gallery featuring the works of individuals like Robert Mapplethorpe. The program also features television, book and movie reviews that would appeal to the taste of the Norman Mailer set. In other words, "CBS Sunday Morning" is a show that would tweak the interest of liberal highbrows and is not meant for viewers in what some call fly-over country.
Anyway, while going through my usual manic-filled channel changing frenzy with my trusty remote, I ended up watching a segment of the CBS program and, to my misfortune, I came across a commentary by Nancy Giles. Giles is an actress with a less than stellar resume who also dabbles in comedy. She authored the play "Black Comedy: The Wacky Side of Racism," so you can see she is more than qualified to offer serious political commentary on the CBS network. I quickly learned I made a dreadful mistake by not putting my remote to further use as I ended up watching Giles' remarkable display of Bush-bushing.
The commentary started out just fine. Giles praised the world intelligence community for disrupting the terror plot which targeted Great Britain and the United States. But faster than Sen. John Kerry can change his mind, Giles launched into an anti-America, anti-Bush tirade worthy of a New York Times editorial.
Giles praised Great Britain's intelligence community for the work it had done concerning the arrest of over twenty would-be Islamic killers who planned to take down countless passenger airliners above the Atlantic Ocean by using chemical explosives. Giles even praised the government of Pakistan for playing a significant part in the defeat of the terrorists. But when it came to the President of the United States, Giles injected an amount of venom equal to that of a King Cobra rousted from a good night's sleep. While listening to Giles, I got the distinct impression she might have been more pleased if the terror plot had not been discovered. Then she could have blamed Bush for the deaths of thousands that would have resulted at the hands of America's enemies. It was clear, Giles did not want to represent Bush favorably, no matter what the outcome of the foiled plot.
I won't go into the particulars of Giles' argument because they were patently ridiculous. However, contrary to her twisted logic, the terrorist plot was stopped because of the close-working relationships between the CIA, FBI and Scotland Yard. Also, Bush's diplomacy with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has led to the sharing of vital information which has uncovered numerous terrorist plots since 9/11.
Giles' commentary on CBS served two purposes. First Sunday Morning's producers will say Giles was offering her own commentary and her thoughts did not reflect the views of CBS News. Secondly, the network further advanced the notion George Bush is incompetent. And, if anyone tells you different, I have a bridge to sell you in the Sahara Desert. In reality, Giles' comments did reflect the opinions of many in the mainstream media who feed on and, sadly enough, long for bad news--so they can place blame on George Bush, the Republican Party and everyone except the terrorists themselves. So CBS will be sure to get high marks among the champaign and caviar crowd who live in Upper Manhattan while, at the same time, her words demonstrate an anti-American agenda that is running rampant within the nation's far left and by some in America's mainstream press. It's no wonder journalists are looked upon with disdain by a vast majority of the American people.
