Love it! I've thought that of myself for years. I've accomplished a lot in my life, but never considered myself smarter than other folks, nor 'above' anyone. And every day I discover something new about the world, new about myself. That's one of the things that makes life so wonderful.
It's too bad (yet obvious) these dufus' have never figured that out.
I hated the 80's for the torture on my calves. My calf muscles are naturally large, and legwarmers and those t-i-g-h-t legged jeans were a nightmare.
I thought sure you were going to post this:
In one episode of 'Cheers', Cliff is seated at the bar describing the 'Buffalo Theory' to his buddy Norm. I don't think I've ever heard the concept explained any better than this...
"Well you see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive drinking of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers."
A valuable "talent", no doubt due to the proximity of the instrument to where his brains are...
I see one trait the Gifted DUers share with the rest of the site.
They are obssesed with themSELVES
This is considered superior? It's really just ID-10-t syndrome.
the first time i ran across the deliberate non-use of capitals was reading e.e. cummings.
this was the same rationale that the berkeley (ca) school district commisars used to deny funding to the g and t program in berkeley. funds were to be targeted for extra-curricular activities at the lawrence hall of science among other things. commisar barbara lubin, alleged sweetie of then-mayor gus newport (of the berkeley electric car fame) dramatically proclaimed "all of our children are gifted and talented."
I've heard the term "mundane" more in association with science fiction fandom geeks (of whom I'm one) referring to those not in fandom.
actually the term i am most enamored with is "dull normal."
i do it all the time becuase im lazy and cant type ;)
big grin!!
i knew is wasnt alone L0L
Well, you gotta tell that to the almost 3m St. Louisans, since in this town, the first question you're asked by a person you just met is "Where did you go to high school?"
Wow. I never would have though that. High school was a pretty meaningless time of my life (although I did win Best Actor of the Year in my sophmore year). But I can't believe anyone would keep it alive 20-30 years later.
Does HS still have meaning for you? I don't mean that in a bad way -- I just don't understand it and I see it on TV all the time.
OMG -- That is one of the funniest things I have ever read/heard!!!! LOL!!!
Of course, it is funny 'cause it is true.
I suspect DU kills brain cells in much the same way as alcohol. It would explain a lot - like how any group so grossly stupid could think they are so brilliant (or is it just the drugs?)
A little bit. I graduated in 1998 in a secular private school in Pereira, Colombia. I had good times and bad times, and have a lot of memories of that time, but I realize all that is in the past now, and I've moved on with my life, as I'm sure all my classmates have done.
Of all the people who I had some level of friendship with in high school (I'd say 8 or 10), I keep in touch with two of them, and that's because I remembered the home phone number for one of them, who remains in Colombia, and the other now lives in Atlanta, and I found him with a web white page search from a tip given by the first one.
The Atlanta friend and I call each other frequently, and during our conversations sometimes we reminisce of those times, but we don't dwell on them, and we mostly talk about our current lives. We've moved on. That's the reality.
That's what makes getting older gratifying in the long run. I live to learn. I have a just about endless list of subjects I really want to get into that I never had the time or inclination to when I was younger. I doubt I'll live long enough to get through it, but I will never ever be bored.
An acquaintance of mine doesn't capitalize either, but, as he explained to someone who complained about his emails, it's too hard on his hands to mess with the shift key somehow, so he just types without caps unless he's typing something important, like a resume or something. I haven't seen his work setup, but he gets around in a wheelchair he puffs into to operate, and with some use of his arms, drives himself to work. He's always cheerful, and an inspiration to see, gently reminding me that no matter what may be happening in my own life, my silly problems are so small. Here's a man who has faced some obstacles in life...
