You're right about McCain. The Dhimms, though, will once again swallow the Kool-Aid and select an "electable" candidate. The far left will sit it out in a snit, and the Republican will coast home.

Unless the HSWs convince enough to vote third party and we have a Ross Perot situation..

Better to do nothing till after the election and get the Wall without amnesty after the American people have spoken. Or not.

Speak for yourself. I had nothing to do with it. I opposed amnesty the first time, and wrote countless letters with real postage stamps on them to my Congressman, President, and Senators.

OK, if 'morality' isn't your bag, try 'legality'. They did break the law, and the fact that they were allowed, even encouraged to do so, doesn't change that. Send 'em back.

I'm reasonably close to your opinion. My wife is Thai and a more Conservative Republican American citizen you will not find. I believe that the immigration problem is largely the USCIS and BICE problem (INS) because it is the most inefficient agency in the US government. I think you have to fix that and have a reasonable biometric ID card system. I think virtual fences with physical reinforcement where they make sense can help; but you need Guest worker and path to citizenship with ID and employer sanctions to ultimately make it work; along with requiring all levels of government, state AND local to assist in catching the illegals (otherwise there is no way to have the manpower). AND you have to be reasonable in saying that those that have built families and are working---in other words if their only crime is the original one of crossing illegally, there needs to be a way of letting them participate legally. These are human beings and it is not the America I know to make felons out of an entire class of millions of people.

Justice Department spokesman Jorge Martinez said the latest figures are believed to be more accurate than previous ones because they reflect new methods used to determine trends in the entry and departure of undocumented residents.

Those methods are very suspect nonetheless. Better estimates using better methods make the number closer to 20 million (which I believe to be true). Do you live in an affected area? Or you just blowing smoke from some safe area like Wyoming?

I'll ditto all of that..
The problem with saying the old 'bumper sticker line'- What part of illegal don't you understand?- or - Why don't we just enforce current laws?- is that the laws right now are so conflicting, illegal entry is technically not much harsher of a law than speeding, and all an illegal has to do if caught is say he has been in the US for more than 5 years and would like to apply for a visa and the INS must give him/her the opportunity to apply for that visa..

Now, the additional crimes such as identity theft, tax fraud, etc, are something we really have to address and not push by the wayside.

Youbecha. There are illegals all over the place around here.

I'm just saying that they're an annoyance and a strain: NOT a "death sentence."

Wow, the DUmmie FUnnies were the target of synchronized hijacking. It's a new FReeper Olympic sport.

I hope this doesn't happen often. These threads are often my only source of refuge from the endless moping and whining on the rest of the site.

Exactly. Forget penalizing those who have planted roots. Illegal or not, they're here, they're not going away; don't round 'em up and send (to use one evil phrase I saw here on FR a few days ago) "boxcars to the borders!"

Now, the additional crimes such as identity theft, tax fraud, etc, are something we really have to address and not push by the wayside.
>>>>

Okay. You tell people they must pay taxes, even if they're here. They illegally get a Tax I.D. # to pay those taxes. That's "fraud." Fine. What's worse? Paying taxes "fraudulently"? Or NOT paying taxes at all?

It's a mexx. <-- that was supposed to say "It's a mess," but that's a fortuitous typo and I'll leave it. Seriously, the only way to fix it is to say, "Okay, screw it! Fine. From now on you're here legally. Here's your goddam green card. But no more after you!" Then back up the 'no more' with teeth. Build up Homeland Security so it can do the job. Hire sufficient border agents, immigration officers, and immigration judges to do the damn job.

PJ,

Do you have some sort penalty for people hijacking a DUFU and turning it into an immigration thread? Pitt photos perhaps?

All,

I'm not trying to be the thread police, but I come here to get away from that stuff.

Well, immigration IS the issue du jour.

And it does relate to the 50 district race. Remember B-1 Bob Dornan back in '96? Illegal voting nuked him, too.

Sorry about the hijack, but we gotta deal with this.

I'm actually referring to Tax Fraud in the 'under the table payments', non reporting (as many are listed as contract labor), identity theft, underreporting, hiding assets, etc...

Well, vast majority of those on the cash economy are earning under the $15K cutoffline anyway, so we don't really lose much in the way of taxes anyhow, in spite of claims otherwise.

And besides, I don't know about YOU, tovarshch, but I for one don't want the IRS to look closely at most people's tax returns anyway.... if you think the INS can't do its job.... geez....

Yes, but this is a humor thread.

There are PLENTY of immigration threads.

I'm stopping on this issue right now. I don't want to participate in the hijack.
