Amazing how people get touchy when the topic of sex and responsibility and morality get brought up. Recreational sex without any responsibility must be defended at all costs, apparently.
It almost seems like a personal issue. People often get irrational when arguing in their own self-interest.

I'm with you. If his speech was anywhere near a graduation ceremony, the guy's a jerk.

And yet fertility treatments such as artificial insemination that enable "sterile" people to have children are also bad...
Not in and of themselves. They are bad because they kill many to yield a few. It's like saying, "We've got a process that will allow you to have children. We need to kill Manuel and Carlos over here to have it be successful, though. Are you ok with that?"

Too bad he didn't sing the speech:
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.
I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.
You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,
Because
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.
GIRL:
Let the heathen spill theirs
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is wanted.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
MUM:
Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.
MEN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
WOMEN:
If a sperm is wasted,...
CHILDREN:
...God get quite irate.
PRIEST:
Every sperm is sacred.
BRIDE and GROOM:
Every sperm is good.
NANNIES:
Every sperm is needed...
CARDINALS:
...In your neighbourhood!
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is useful.
Every sperm is fine.
FUNERAL CORTEGE:
God needs everybody's.
MOURNER #1:
Mine!
MOURNER #2:
And mine!
CORPSE:
And mine!
NUN:
Let the Pagan spill theirs
O'er mountain, hill, and plain.
HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.
EVERYONE:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaaate!

Jesus would have thundered at a bunch of college kids about the evils of contraception
No, Jesus whould have thundered at the Pharisees (Catholic clerics and teachers) who had led the youth astray with false teachings.
especially since He never had a single word to say on the subject in His actual public life.
Are you positing that the Church's position on birth control doesn't reflect the teachings of Christ on the subject? Didn't you say you accepted Humanae Vitae.

His pastor (whom I know well) told him to never preach about abortion again, or he'd be forbidden from preaching. Wow. Just...WOW!

You know, that song was funny for about 10 minutes in the 1980s.
Have a look at Britain today, though, where 2 out of the top 10 baby names are Mohammed. Suddenly, it's not so funny anymore. It's more like a reflection of tragic societal stupidity.

Wow. Just...WOW!
Don't make the mistake of believing an anecdote just because it's offered in a public forum. Some people just make stuff up.

The problem is this approach does not achieve the intended goal...to cause people to reflect on the Church's teaching.
Says you. As should be apparent from this thread, there's considerable debate on the issue and hardly any kind of consensus. Personally, I don't fear public debate on an issue like this. Not in the least bit.
For many with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, there is NEVER an appropriate time to address this topic.

Older men and younger women? Hardly. There was a senior boy at a local high school who had sex with his freshman girlfriend in the bathroom near the band hall. They both laughed about how they pulled it off an no one caught them. Her parents filed statutory rape charges against him.
Society tells them that as long as they have "safe sex" the it's okay.

The more I read about T.R. the higher my opinion of him grows. A very worthy choice for Mt. Rushmore.

I didn't realize this thread was about whether or not YOU are afraid of debate.
Somehow I had already gotten the impression you are quite comfortable debating this topic.
"For many with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, there is NEVER an appropriate time to address this topic."
You misrepresent me, but that is not surprising.
I never stated there is NEVER an appropriate time to address the topic.

We're a free country, and part of that freedom is deciding how many children to have. You're welcome to have twelve, I'm welcome to have none. Pushing an agenda that meddles with people's personal lives is not what I thought conservatism was about, but so much has changed. You are, perhaps, confusing libertine-ism with conservatism.
If one wishes to "conserve" a way of life, one must first ensure that there are future generations. It's fundamental.
Take a look at Europe and see the demographic suicide she is engaged in. Surely you can recognize that perhaps a society that contracepts and aborts itself out of existence may have gone a little too far with the selfishness. With the here and now as opposed to sacrificing for the future.

Antoninus - great point.
For some, the time, place or tone are ALWAYS wrong, because they simply won't allow their choice to use birth control to be subjected to any scrutiny whatsoever in any forum for any reason by anybody in any way. I am convinced that if Jesus himself confronted them on the issue they would tell him to buzz off.

And if an example like this had been given during the speech, it probably would have been better received.

You'll notice that I didn't address you directly in my statement, but refered to "many". That was not done accidentally.
