Rathergate was actually discovered before it happened. Rove's email to FReeper Buckhead discussing the fake but accurate TANG document and how Rove had set up Rather for a fall was sent the day before the broadcast.

On a personal note...

It would probably be a good thing for the health and welfare of this community for everyone to stop beating the excresence out of each other over this Rove story. This goes for me, too. I just got into a snipe-fest in another thread, and immediately felt stupid about it.

On my personal note, I believe that there are some members of the DU community who owe Will Pitt an apology. They are demanding an apology from Mr. Pitt for rudeness when they have themselves repeatedly been more rude and intolerant of other's opinions than Mr. Pitt ever was. DU is quick to point out the hypocrisies of others. Some of us should take a long hard look at our own.

Let the flaming begin, before this is locked. I so needed to say this.

That's all well and good, but I didn't see "I'm sorry" in there.

That said, I have no strong opinion one way or another on his role in this, beyond the fact that he took advocacy for his 'journalist' to a new and unfortunate level. He certainly fanned the flames, but he didn't light the fire.

The guy with the byline is the at the nexus of all this. He really is the one who needs to do some 'splainin'...everything else is just bluster, distraction and noise.

11. How do you know that Leopold wasn't used like Hatfield and Rather were? There sre so many similarities between Hatfield and :eopold that it is beyond uncanny! They were both probably selected by the Rove camp because of their lack of credibility. The reasoning being, well, they are telling the truth, but who would believe these people?

I started a thread on this several days ago, but it was promptly locked.

Of course, he's looking at a third strike, here, seeing as he has pulled this "shoddy journalism" business twice before and been fired for it.

I think he's praying for an indictment soon, so he can say "Right Church, Wrong Pew" but as time marches on, that's looking less and less likely. "Getting ahead of the news cycle" doesn't cut it, because the news cycle is sailing forward, covering miles like Lance Armstrong. There comes a point when thet turn of phrase should more accurately be termed "Making Excresence Up Based on a Halfposteriored Guess and Maybe Some BS Fed to Me by Someone Who Pretended to be In the Know."

And that's what it looks like he did. He may have been fed some excresence, but he ran with it without triple-checking. Sloppy of him, to be charitable about it, with a story this important. But hey, he wanted to be FIRST. And now, he's LAST....
