I have never look at the military as being a gov. employee, the four years I spent in the military I sure wasn't paid like an employee.

You are correct about the government and running something, most of the time they run it in the ground and have O accountability.

I remember Klinton and AlGore saying how they shrunk the size of Government.

However, it was because of them gutting the US Military.

I agree, the push for amnesty and guest worker came after the 2000 election. According to this article, as Governor of Texas, he didn't know much about illegal immigration like he claims he knew.

As Governor, he didn't try to stop anything.

Well now, that's the one thing you won't hear out of Congress or the White House. I suppose the proper tribute has been paid.

Why do you think Bush and Congress have taken the track they have, up until they were forced to do something (as pitiful as it is)?

Those businesses have money, and want a non-secure border, and Bush and Congress were content to give it to them.

On the opposite side, we have votes, and the GOP is/was splitting with the rank and file over this issue - the GOP leadership wants to kiss up to potential Hispanic voters while Conservatives were tired of the state of the border. The problem for the GOP leadership, this is an election year, and even if Bush isn't running, he's under a lot of pressure to help out Republican politicians, and so they start trying to compromise with us.

It's like the National Guard troops on the border - they'll be there until after the election is over.

The Republicans and Dems are betting they can bird-dog us with minor social issues (I don't want my kid reading that book in school!), while the grand plan of totally screwing over the American middle class falls into place. I'm betting they're right.

As a nation, we are easily distracted. You or I could start a thread about how Congress wants to take something out of the Constitution without our approval, or about how the government is getting too big and too powerful. You'll have a thread of about 50-100 responses, with about two dozen posters at the most.

On the other hand, if you or I post a thread about Tom Cruise saying one little thing bad about Bush or the GOP, you'll have a thread with a 1000 plus responses in a few hours, with hundreds of posters fuming.

I've been seeing this on FR over the past year or so, and it stuns me that threads that should really get Conservatives riled up don't, and meanwhile threads about some airhead shooting his mouth off get everybody foaming at the mouth.

You should have been here when Clinton was President. It was a much different atmosphere.

I was, under a different name (and even before then, on usenet).

That's why it's shocking to me how much things have changed - people will make excuses for Bush or for Congress about things they say or do, and they would have crucified Clinton for the same thing.

As I've said before, I'm the same Conservative I was in 1970 and 1980 and 1990 and 2000, but the GOP is most definitely not the same as it was - I didn't leave the GOP, it left me.
