If anyone believes that once an elected CP candidate gets into office, they'll govern differently from an elected conservative Republican
Well, since we haven't had anyone govern as a conservative Republican since Reagan I'll take that as an endorsement of how they would govern.
Actually, that does not have to be the story line. What if existing 'fed up' conservatives and border controllers from both the Republican and Democratic Parties defected to the Third Party. Instantly a third party would appear with a size-able chunk of power. Winning the Presidency might then just be an afterthought.
Anyone know the current laws concerning switching parties in midstream for Senators and Reps (State and fed ?).
That's a perot-like fantasy.
The Libertarians have been around since 1971, and where have they gotten? They're philosophically a lot closer to this imaginary new third party than any other.
This "mass defections" idea is completely unworkable. The politicians would instantly lose all party support with no guarantee of new support; as soon as they put out feelers to this new third party they would be cut off from their current one. Then you have two halves of a Republican/Conservative party and the Dems the overwhleming majoirty.
You don't just invent a party overnight and think there is an easy shortcut. It just doesn't happen that way, never has, and certainly won't in thie new media age.
Next idea...
And, as with the Reform Party, it will take someone with significant $$$ to form such a 3rd party. It takes money. Ross Perot used his person fortune to establish the Reform Party. Buchanan wheedled his way into it and absconded with some $12 million and destroyed the Reform Party in his own selfish interest.
Actually the time is ripe for a LIBERAL third party!
Especially if Hillary gets the nod.
I have not forgotten what Nader did to Al Gore in 2000. Nader stole 90,000 votes from Gore in Florida! Nader gave the election to Bush!
We need to encourage the anti-war socialists to run their own canidate against a war-mongering Hillary (who voted FOR the Iraq war!)...The hard left will fall for it just like they did for the anti-corporate greens.
This cannot be repeated enough.
The answer is right there, has always been there, yet some around here want to remake the wheel instead of doing the boring, hard work that has always been the route to electoral success. I don't understand it, frankly. Are we now just lazy and emotional and want the childish satisfaction of wiping the board clean of all the "wrong" people and just expect them to be replaced by dozens of "right" people?
Perhaps history can be the guide. Prior to 1994, most people thought the Republicans would never ever control the US House. In fact, I distinctly remember the leader of this Rebellion, Rush himself, even plainly stating, 'look, the republicans will never control the house'. Guess what the first election of Bill Clinton gave us just 2 years later ?
Why don't we borrow that worn out line that poor people use to justify spending their little meager savings on state lottery tickets
'You cannot win if you don't play'.
Yes, yes, as do I. I regret that every time we must parrot that PC line about "not questioning patriotism". I feel liberals have really lowered the bar on what must now be accepted as patriotic.
Well they should be more competitive regardless of who the party picks
Many movies in Hollywood don't do well because of the money spent in advertisements .. they do well because of the content and word of mouth from the people
Get the candidates in the primaries and let he best candidate win
Bill Clinton never won a majority of the popular vote. But for Ross Perot, Clinton never would have won in 1992, when he was elected with 43% of the vote.
Clinton won because of a combination of his own incredible talents as a politician, the incredible ineptitude of his opponents in '92 and '96 and Ross Perot. Absent Perot, Clinton definitely loses in '92.
The only way Hilary can win is if you have a similar combination of events. She is a very poor candidate compared to him, but Republicans could still nominate a clown, and some idiot could still run as a third party candidate and bleed away Republican support.
There's a war on, and this is no time to indulge in ideological purty at the price of giving the White House to the party of defeat and surrender.
The GOP truly earns the title, the stupid party. This split between members is being planned by the new worlders and it is designed to make bubba and the boss President again.
We already have a third party! The Libertarian party is available for anyone who doesn't want to sell out!
I believe that the writer of this article claimed that the Constitution Party polled the best in a three way 'triangulation'. To be viable right now, the third party must be tough on the border.
