Bush speech marks low point for GOP
Conservative Oupost ^ | 5/16/06 | Drew McKissick

I say the speech marks a low point because the Administration has made a conscious decsion to push full steam ahead on an issue that has the potential to turn the GOP's majority into a minority - fast.

Somebody please tell me what we elected a Republican majority for? To pass programs that make a mockery of our laws? To open our country's borders to upwards of 200 million immigrants over the next 20 years...just so we can, (as John McCain suggests), have someone to clear the tables in our restaurants and pick our vegetables.

Some day's I think that some elements of the GOP have lost their collective minds. It's one thing to do something stupid, have someone point it out, learn from it and not do it again. It's another to rush headlong into something so monstrously stupid that everyone with half a brain is pointing it out to you and you stubbornly continue to do it. In this case, putting the Republican majority at serious risk. OK, that was being charitable. We're probably already at serious risk, at least in terms of one of the two houses of Congress, but this thing threatens to split the party down the middle.

And of all the issues for the President to "make a stand on", why oh why does it have to be this? Geez, how about the budget, runaway spending or something. Maybe vetoing a bill now and then. That terrible piece of "reform" known as Campaign Finance Reform comes to mind. But no, it has to be this.

And as we go through this debate, might I just say that there are several phrases that should be banned completely, as I am utterly sick of hearing them. Such as "comprehensive reform"...as in, we can just fix one problem, we have to leverage "your" desire to do border security to get "our" amnesty plan. And how about "out of the shadows"? With all the rallies lately, I don't think anyone's in the shadows anymore. And heck, it's not like the government doesn't know what "shadows" their hiding in...they've just made a conscious decision not to enforce the law. Just like they made a conscious one to showboat by busting some illegals a few weeks ago. And I am sick and tired of supposedly intelligent people suggesting that our economy is going to crumble if we don't import tens of millions of poorly educated, unskilled laborers. Please. Let's call a spade a spade. That's the business community talking. It's almost enough to turn social conservatives against business.

And what's with this straw-man the proponents of "comprehensive reform" keep promoting when they say their plan is necessary because, "we can't possibly deport 12 million people". I'll say it once again for the hearing impaired. WE DON'T HAVE TO! Just enforce the border and fine the heck out of any business that hires them. They can either sit hear and a) go hungry, b) try and fraudulently collect welfare...at which time they should be shipped back home, or c) eventually go home.

And since when where the proponents of this program so all fired up about the fact that we have illegal aliens in this country. You'd think they just woke up and discovered it. Now they claim that any proposal must address their status and "get them out of the shadows". Please. They're just trying to ride on the coattails of the momentum created by conservatives over lax border enforcement.

I for one and thoroughly and completely sick. Will the real conservatives please stand up? Thank the good Lord we managed to get a few good judges and Justices on the Supreme Court out of the sweat everyone put into the last few campaigns. It doesn't look like real conservatives will get much else.

Good post. I'm sure you'll give the keen insights of the critics all the attention they deserve.

...we're all supposed to be self-loathing.

The thought never occurred to me. For anyone who thinks I deserve to see myself as such, I suggest they run, not walk, to a wise counselor immediately.

If you or others have not read "what we elected a Republican for?" included in this thread by Drew McKissect, I recommend that you do.

I was thinking the low point will be in November, but it will actually be sometime in 2007 when the new 'Rat congress impeaches Bush. Bush fell on his sword last night pandering to future 'Rat voters. Like father, like son (except that Bush Sr. was only pandering to existing 'Rat voters).

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales appeared on On The Record with Greta Van Susteren, May 16 2006. I caught part of the interview. Twice I heard Greta ask him what the government's policy will be regarding the employers of illegal aliens. And each time he skirted around the question, never answering it.

One could see this as an insult to the intelligence of Americans watching and listening to him. And shame on Greta for allowing him to pull this phony crap.

Name a politician you believe is honest, truthful, and looking out for the best interests of all Americans. I'm at a loss.

"Bush has destroyed the GOP, perhaps forever."

Tell Drew what he wants to hear. Make him think that the universe will spin left instead of right and send him to bed with a nice cup of hot milk. President Bush gave a comprehensive plan that made sense for the adults that were listening.

The GOP has effectively stuck its (middle) finger in the collective eye of Conservatives on this issue. It appears that they are telling Conservatives "we've decided that we aren't going home with you after all even though you did bring us to the dancet". They're telling us we're on our own from here on out.

You know for the first time in months I wake up feeling great about being a conservative. Mark down the date of May 15. On that day, the President stood up and affirmed what he has advocated for more than a decade. At that moment he transcended the narrow, bitter wing of social conservatives who appear to advocate political beliefs steeped in bias and prejudice against anyone who dares think even a little differently. There are many individual matters where I may disagree with the President (federal involvement in education) but, on the whole, he clearly stands as a person I can follow. If, as I suspect, his popularity improves. If he starts to poll ahead of GOP popularity we will begin to see the fix. Many of us who think of ourselves as fiscal conservatives have never been happy with many the positions promoted by social conservatives (ban on stem cell research). Perhaps it is time for a trial separation. But, we should certainly cooperate and maintain harmonious relations for the good of the children.

When you get as incensed about some blacks and white trash who do the same thing, let me know.

I've known mojave here on FR for years, and I can assure you that he is passionate against drug dealers and criminals whether they are legal or not. If you don't believe me, take a look at any drug war thread on FR that he's involved in.

Drug threads are off-limits for me. They're boring as hell.

I hear 'ya. They can get a bit tedious. I just wanted to point out that mojave is consistently law and order. I've battled him plenty on the past on those. The funny thing is the fact that when it comes to immigration, me, the loserdopian, and mojave, the jack-booted thug, are almost on exactly the same page.

You feel great about liberal half-assed measures that will ensure the continuing invasion of illegal aliens? I've read that border crossings have increased since Monday night--the illegals are voting for the amnesty program with their feet by moving north!

I have no doubt that May 15, 2006, will be remembered as an important day. But the only ones celebrating Bush's stubborn affirmation of a failed policy will be the 'Rats. And you can go blow your unwarranted racist accusations up someone else's rectum. The only one singing a racist tune is you, my friend.

Feel free to practice your odd brand of fiscal conservatism--spending my hard-earned tax dollars to support your favorite illegal future 'Rat voters--in a nation other than mine.

Tell you what--in the interest of maintaining harmonious relations, if things look bright and wonderful for the 'Icans on the Ides of May, 2009, the anniversary of the day you rejoice in, you're welcome to come to King County, WA, where I will gladly admit I was wrong and kiss your racist rear end in front of Pike Place Market. I'll even give you a half hour to draw a crowd.

Thank you for your kind offer. I am not really into that kinky stuff and tend to be rather modest when it comes to crowds. No offense intended but I think I must say no at this time.

I don't think you had much to fear as the probabilities are not against me. Thus, it's a win-win for us both.
