There's a RenFest which travels all through North Carolina every spring. I've helped a local SCA chapter mock up a sword fighting demo for them. (I fence and fight with a bo, a Japanese quarterstaff.)

When I lived in Manhattan way back, we used to go to the big one on the Jersey/Pennsylvania border...I can't remember what it was called. Maybe someone else does.

And the idea that the performers are homosexual exists only in the fevered imaginations of those insecure people who see gays behind every bush. So to speak.

OK. That tears it. No more renaissance faires for me...I'll check out the Scottish games, instead. ;o]

I got pretty burned out on Ren Faires. Used to go to Sterling when we lived in NY State, then attended the Northern California Pleasure Faire when we moved out here. However, I became really turned off by the increasing Christian-bashing, which became more vociferous each year, and the blatant bawdiness which made it less and less family friendly; not to mention the silly profusion of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter characters. What is it the Society for Creative Anachronism uses as their motto--oh yes--"History as it should have been" or some such claptrap.

Ive been to a few and of those Ive been to I like the one in Bristol for a number of reasons and its closer to you than the others mentioned.

The only thing I dont like about it is the quality of the list/joust has been on a steady decline for a number of years...must be an insurance thing...

Battle Creek is closer, and I'd have to take the ferry (something I've always wanted to do anyway) for the one in Kenosha.

"Battle Creek is closer..."

Yah, but you posted that one. I meant closer than the various CA, CO, FL, NY, faires mentioned and thought you were asking because you were looking for an alternative to your home faire.

The ferry is a nice if pricey ride and something you should do at least once. Ive gone a couple of times and happen to know that somewhere out in the "middle" of Lake Michigan is a 7 year olds version of a time capsule prepared just for the crossing...

Hi Alkhin! Long time no see! We went to to the RenFaire up here for Mother's Day. The Dallas Morning News had coupons for free entry for moms (woohoo!) They also have a homeschool day that has a discounted entry fee.
