Wildland Fire UpdateMarch 15, 2006Nationally, fire activity was light with 162 new fires. Seven new large fires were reported: one in Kansas, three in Kentucky, one in Maryland, one in New Mexico, and one in Virginia. Ten large fires were contained: one in Kansas, three in Kentucky, one in Maryland, two in New Mexico, one in Oklahoma, one in Texas, and one in Virginia. Many red flag warnings are in effect today across the Atlantic states due to very low humidities and strong, gusty winds. Red flag warnings are also issued for low humidities and southwesterly strong, gusty winds in Oklahoma and across the panhandle of Texas. A fire weather watch is in effect for Thursday for continued low humidities in Florida. Another fire weather watch is issued for strong winds and low humidities east of the New Mexico central mountain chain and the high plains as well as the Guadalupe mountains of west Texas.

Oklahoma Fire Response (Oklahoma State): 115,738 acres at an unknown percent contained. An Oklahoma State Type 2 Incident Management Team (Roberts) is assisting local, federal, and state jurisdictions in managing fires and initial attack in Oklahoma. East Amarillo Complex (Texas Forest Service): 705,000 acres at 75 percent contained. This complex is located near Jerico and consists of the Borger and I-40 fires. The community of McLean remains threatened. Evacuation orders for the rest of the communities were lifted. Nine residences and 80 outbuildings were lost. West Texas IA (Texas Forest Service): 2,914 acres at an unknown percent contained. A Texas State Type 2 Incident Management Team (Hannemann) is assisting local jurisdictions with managing fires and initial attack within the 220,000 square mile West Zone response area. Another Type 2 Incident Management Team (Hinds) was ordered. Large fires within the response area include the Ram, Oldham Boy's Ranch, East Amarillo Complex, Buckle L 2, Birthday, Spring Valley, and Peterson fires. Fire weather summary:
Red Flag Warnings: Widespread Warnings are in effect today across the Atlantic states due to very low humidities (mid teens to 20%s) and very strong and gusty surface winds 15 to near 40 mph (highest across the Mid Atlantic states). Red Flag weather conditions are also in effect today across the panhandle of Texas and the state of OK for low humidities Upper teens to 20%s and Southwesterly strong, gusty surface winds 15 to over 35 mph.
Fire Weather Watches: In effect for Thursday for Florida for continued low humidities. Winds will be lighter.
East of the New Mexico central mountain chain and the adjacent high plains, as well as the Guadalupe mountains of far west Texas for strong winds and low humidities.
Weather Discussion: A weather disturbance will bring strong winds combined with low relative humidity levels to the southern Plains and southern Rockies today. Elsewhere, a large high pressure center will settle over the southeastern portion of the country creating dry conditions, and increasing winds in some locations. Relative humidity will drop significantly over the Southeast with the driest conditions over the coastal states from the mid-Atlantic to the Gulf Coast.
