27 February 2006 -- Prosecutors in Moscow have opened an investigation into the killing of television journalist Ilya Zimin.
Zimin, an investigative reporter who worked with the NTV network, was found dead on 26 February in his apartment in the north of Moscow.
Prosecutors said he died after being severely beaten by unknown assailants. They said his death was not connected to his reporting work.
Before moving to Moscow in 2000, Zimin headed NTV's Far East bureau. He also worked for the TV6 and TVS television channels.
He survived a previous attack last April, when he was violently beaten outside the entrance to his apartment building.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has listed Russia among the world's 10 most-hazardous countries for reporters.

In the last sentence "could" should have been "could not".
Yeah that's pretty recent.
I already posted today that eye witnesses say it was skinheads. This was covered up by much of the media.
I thought they made an arrest in one of the cases?
I know I wouldn't have wanted to be a Finn in Moscow after the hockey match last week!
Ooo and a personal attack to boot, but they fling those around relentlessly too.
You mean who made an arrest?
""Eyewitnesses say that the skinheads [the attackers] left the site of the fight on a microbus," Makarenko said. "I don't know many hooligans who are traveling in microbuses.""

you post from RFE/RL enough that I'm surprised you call them liars.
I asked you several times NOT TO post anything to me, as I'm not interested in your comments.
If you feel some kind of internal need to comment my post - please do it by posting yourself or one of your colleagues.
No - two separate issues. Sorry! First issue was serious - I thought the Moscow police made an arrest in one of the assaults (on the journalist, I think?).
The second one was a joke - The Finns beat the Russians in hockey. I wouldn't have wanted to have been a Finn in Moscow that night!
Flight 800...
I didn't know about that arrest. Polish media have not reported anything about it.
But if that's true - very good then.
I wasn't going to recall those events, it was x5452 and his astonishing attempt to blame Poles for the murder of that Russian journalist (post #10, which has been removed).
From post 3:
The Moscow Prosecutor's Office said Ilya Zimin's killing was not related to his professional activities. The second sentence does not support the first. Absence of evidence is just absence of evidence. The reporter just simply has no training in elementary logic"At the moment, there is no evidence to suggest that the crime was linked to Zimin's professional activity," the Prosecutor's Office press service said.
I can POST to you as much as I like, that's hardly PINGING you.
Apparently you don't know sarcasm when you read it.
That wild and crazy Putin.
They have evidence now which points to it being a personal affair, its not in the article because the poster didn't post the most recent news. I have posted it subsequently.
I seem to recall that Vince Foster was ruled a suicide in a matter a minutes. He was very depressed ya know! /sarc
I read various articles about the murder. The conceirge claims three guys entered the apartment building with police identification, but that doesn't mean they were involved. It was a 22-floor building. He lived on the 18th floor. The area is pretty nice - it's over by Ostankino and the tv station he worked at (NTV). The police say that his apartment was a mess, he fought back pretty good, and nothing was apparently missing from his apartment (although, how would they know?). This almost sounds like one of those deals where a guy calls a hooker for in-call and she shows up, waits a while and let's her cronies in to rob a guy. If they resist - well, you know what happens. Happens all the time in Moscow.
Regarding the "not connected with his professional life" - whenever a businessman, politician, star, or journalist is killed they usually come right out and say if they think it was a hit because of their work activities, or because of personal activities. Such is the climate when you have mafia problems.
Unless the have proof that it was because of his journalist work i don't buy it.
We've had like 40 posts insinuating he was killed by the kremlin because he was a journalist. We haven't one which even asserts his reporting was anti-Kremlin!
Of course you can. So as I CAN fart during a meal or during some meeting. It's not against the law. But I choose not to. It's a matter of manners.
So if somebody asks you repeatedly NOT TO ping him, it's a matter of manners not to spam his PING LIST.
Include me to that request, as I'm also not interested what you have to say.
I do not have a ing list, I have not use a ping list on anyone yourself included.
When lizol or yourself post anti-Russia lies I will respond to your post, that is not the same as pinging.
