The moonbats on DU are fluttering all over the place over the Dick Cheney hunting incident. Adding one part ignorance to two parts conspiracy theorist results in the following sampler:

Is Hunting Accident an impeachable offense?

The Constitution says the standard for impeachment is "high crimes and misdemeanors."

As I read the Texas Code on Assault and Aggravated Assault, Cheney is guilty of both:

§ 22.01. ASSAULT. (a) A person commits an offense if the person:

(1) intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causes bodily injury to another, including the person's spouse;
(2) intentionally or knowingly threatens another with imminent bodily injury, including the person's spouse; or
(3) intentionally or knowingly causes physical contact with another when the person knows or should reasonably believe that the other will regard the contact as offensive or provocative.

(b) An offense under Subsection (a)(1) is a Class A misdemeanor,...

§ 22.02. AGGRAVATED ASSAULT. (a) A person commits an offense if the person commits assault as defined in § 22.01 and the person:

(1) causes serious bodily injury to another, including the person's spouse; or
(2) uses or exhibits a deadly weapon during the commission of the assault.
(b) An offense under this section is a felony of the second degree, except that the offense is a felony of the first degree if the offense is committed:
(1) by a public servant acting under color of the servant's office or employment;...

Did Cheney shoot lawyer to distract from his role in leak?

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.

Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday.

“He is stable and doing well. It was almost like he was spending time with me in my living room,” said hospital administrator Peter Banko, who visited Whittington. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11312757 /

WASHINGTON - Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald should investigate Vice President Dick Cheney and others in the CIA leak probe if they authorized an aide to give secret information to reporters, Democratic and Republican senators said Sunday.

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., called the leak of intelligence information “inappropriate” if it is true that unnamed “superiors” instructed Cheney’s former chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, to divulge the material on Iraq

4. The Inclination To Default To Conspiracy Is Boggling. Some conspiracies I see on here give me pause for thought and at times have been more logical than what I had prior believed.

Not this one. This one's just preposterous on every level.

He was asked for some friendly advice re: the leak case and the atty. told him it didn't look good for him and *BLAM*

10. I don't imagine Cheney really needs a motive to shoot anyone I kinda get the feeling he'd shoot someone for just being in his way...

"Well, he got in my way. So I shot him"

12. Well, if Cheney is charged with Reckless Endangerment - as the average idiot would be - he'd have to step down. If Fitzgerald indicts him, it wouldn't be as damaging to Shrub if Cheney was already out. (I'm now going to polish my tin foil chapeau.)

Just asking. Being drunk seems the most obvious.

5. That's why it's going to take THIS ISSUE to make a change We've lost the media but if we drive home the fact that Cheney's covering up a SERIOUS SHOOTING, then the average Republican will "listen up."

So...how do you think this shooting will affect the administration?

Everybody already hates Dick Cheney. But what will happen to the administration's reputation? The same? Worse? Far worse? BETTER? Just seeing what you think...

1. I don't think it's going to matter at all. They will stick to the story. An accident, Cheney feels terrible, rotten luck. No criminal charges will filed or even considered. Forgotten about in a few days.

2. It depends upon whether the guy lives... ... or not. If he does, then the media will forget it and move on to the next celebrity murder or missing girl. Even if it turns out that Cheney was drunk and should have been prosecuted, it won't happen.

But, you can count on one thing: the air will be a little close and thick in the Old Executive Office Building when Cheney next shows up for work.

Wonder if the WH guards will make Cheney go through the metal detector?

6. I think it matters a great deal

Look, we (liberals/progressives) all know that DeadEye Dick is bad news. But we have followed the arcane details of Dick's corruption for YEARS.

But every local yokel knows that shooting your hunting buddy makes you at best a fool and at worst a complete MORAN.

It takes some thought to dissemble Cheney's lies about nukular weapons and yellowcake from an African country with a funny name that reads like a racial epithet; but any dope can figure out that shooting your hunting partner takes a special kind of incompetence.

This is a gold mine. It is VERY damaging. Why do y'all think they covered it up for a full day, and why is there a full-court press to minimize the damage, i.e., "he's sitting up and alert", "Cheney was very apologetic", "it was just an accident", and on and on.

23. If The Press does it's job , this is HUGE

I just heard on C-Span that "some member" of the Armstrong Family (a black sheep Democrat) leaked the story to a local media outlet.

My theory: these bastards (Cheney's handlers) were NOT going to report this incident at all!

What I like to know is when the police were notified? Isn't failure to contact the police immediately after an accidental shooting - unlawful in and of itself?

Or is everything relative when it comes to this smarmy Executive Branch in seemingly 1984 Bush-World?

Where were the hunting dogs?

People use dogs to fetch back game after they've killed it, even the poorest redneck in these parts will have a hunting dog. Snarlin deadeye dick shot whitington when he went to fetch a quail, that's what dogs do fetch. Now, they're trying to tell me that men as filthy f***ing rich as these lying thieves didn't take a dog along to fetch back the game, maybe deadeye is afraid of dogs.

These pukes have no valid arguments so they continually hyper-inflate any story that suits their cause and use belittling verbage and insults to cheer each other on.

I can hardly read a liberal letter to the editor anymore without there being some form of "King George", "our great leader", "Haliburton", "Bush Regime", etc. yada, what morons.

Register at DU now to claim a login for the Nov. 2006 Election night. I have hunch the place is going to meltdown worse than it did in 2004.

DUers grabbing onto any slender reed is a sign of their desperation. How many times since 2000 have they put all their emotion into a "sure fire" Bush scandal or miscue, only to have their hopes dashed? I enjoy reading their stream of consciousness rants about how nothing ever sticks to the "repukes". And their theories about why they lose are almost as funny.

I agree that the 2006 election could be another moonbat meltdown. But I think the mother of all meltdowns would occur if Bush could get another Supreme Court justice appointed before he leaves office. That would really drive a stake through their hearts!
