Reaction of Conservative Pioneer Richard A. Viguerie to the President’s State of the Union Address
ConservativeHQ ^ | January 30, 2006 | Richard Viguerie

Posted on 02/01/2006 9:09:14 PM PST by TBP

Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com and co-author of America’s Right Turn, issued the following statement regarding President Bush’s State of the Union Address:

“The President had some good things to say about spending, taxes, and immigration, but conservatives have heard that song before.

“In parts of the speech, he sounded like he had undergone a conversion from being the biggest spender in American history to a fiscal conservative. But conservatives have heard this kind of rhetoric often from Presidents named Bush. Today, most conservatives feel that the President and the GOP leaders have betrayed the conservative revolution they were promised.

“President Bush alluded to the serious ethical problems in Congress. Yet, the worst corruption in Washington is not in the illegal and sleazy activities, but in the legal theft contained in things like pork barrel spending projects; in the $8 Trillion prescription drug program; the agriculture subsidies; etc., etc., etc. All of this leads to the unsustainable national debt that is being passed along to our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

“The President’s conservative rhetoric regarding illegal immigration, all the while continuing to advocate his guest worker amnesty program, will not deceive the American people.

“Conservatives are not fooled. Results of a January 30, 2006 ConservativeHQ.com poll of more than 1,000 conservative activists found that 65% think the President is not governing as a conservative; 64% grade him as either D or F on government spending; and 70% give him a D or F on immigration.

“And historically, when conservatives are unhappy, Republicans pay a big price on election day and today, many conservatives feel angry and betrayed.

“Conservatives hope and pray that a born-again Conservative George W. Bush has emerged tonight. However, based on his record during the last five years, we need more than rhetoric.”

I don't see a whole lot to argue with. Mr Bush has done a terrific job in the GWOT but he has been decidedly underwhelming domestically.

Well, one is a longtime conservative activist who has labored in the vineyards for 30 years or more and has been one of the prinicpal funders of our movement. The other has presided over the biggest ioncrease in government in 40 years. As a conservative, which one do you think I'm supposed to trust?

Mr. Viguerie was interviewed by Michael Savage today. Dubbed the "conservative kingmaker", he expressed disappointment with the GOP and its globalist agenda, and sounded much like an old school Goldwater conservative. He also noted that disenfranchised conservatives can be a formidable voting (or lack thereof) block when betrayed.

The Democrats that still remain in Congress are socialists. There aren't many moderate Democrats left. That's why if they get to power now, it would be an unmitigated disaster.

No credit for things like tax cuts and judicial nominees? No acknowledgment of the largely spineless Republican Congress or the political opposition he's faced?

---Sorry, Viguerie, you Chump. Conservatives DON'T pay a "big price" on election day, a will not pay a "big price" on election day. (F'in foolish comments are his; laughable).
Give us a poll on how many Conservative people "feel angry and betrayed" you jackas

---What is thei "born again" BS? I don't hope and pray for that. I don't believe in that rhetoric. This is a Christian Country. Born that way, initially. Who does believe what you do "born again"? Not my family. George Bush has not "EMERGED TONIGHT", you fool. And you got much more than rhetoric. Watch the replay.

Bush has shown good leadership in the WOT, cutting taxes, court nominees and right to life issues. On federal spending, limited government and immigration reform Bush has failed.

If anyone has a problem with oldguard conservative activist Richard Viguerie, they have a problem with American conservatism. Viguerie was instrumental in making abortion into a mainstream conservative issue and a popular issue with the Christian Right.

Absolutely agree. Republicans need reform but they are the only sane choice.

The tax cuts still leave rates higher than they were under Reagan. The massive spending increases (prescription drugs) endanger these and any future tax cuts. Tax cuts can be reversed (Reagan's were), but big spending programs rarely (if ever) are.

It looks like he has been good on court appointments. It will take a few years and some key decisions to be sure, but I am fairly confident. If he can appoint one or even two more to the Supreme Court then this "compassionate conservative" nonsense might have been worth it.

Bush's policies would fit comfortably within a European Christian Democratic party. It takes more than talking about Jesus to make a conservative.

Anything that fails to mention other inroads the President has made on conservative issues, the political opposition he's overcome to make those inroads, or the global realities that forced him to reorder priorities is not enough said.

It's not that I disagree that there are huge issues that remain to be confronted or that there hasn't been a price paid for the victories that have been managed. But I do take issue with those who don't recognize political realities, including the viability of their agenda when it comes to a national election. I'm in favor of protecting the turf that's been won and building on it on next election.
