"On a more serious note, there are many who believe that the Mahdi is on the verge of appearing, each one with his own vision of the form and characteristics attributed to the Mahdi, based on his or her traditional vision of what he will look like and what he will do. Thus, the Mahdi of the Shia differs from that of the Sunnis who in turn, is different from that of other Islamic sects and sub-sects."

"False Prophet" is what springs to mind. This is what you get when both Islamists AND the morally bereft left wish for Armageddon NOW. Both sides think that when Christianity is destroyed and the world made over, things will be a lot easier....though they believe for very different reasons. Muslims want the resurrection of the Caliphate, while the left just wants power. Guess which one will be left if it comes to that?

A historical figure named Mohammed Achmed, who lived in the Sudan during the 1880s described himself as the Mahdi. He started a holy war against the Egyptians. He died unexpectedly with no known cause a few months after defeating a great British General at the siege of Khartoum. You could say that he was a false prophet since his holy war eventually went nowhere.
