I'd Love to Change the World with Syriana
Syriana, the movie, released in 2005 is an excellent example of the Hollywood Politics of the unElectable. The plot addresses an issue of continuing crucial political concern, the global politics of oil, and presents an analysis of the problem. Syriana determines that unscruplous oilmen, sleazy influence-peddlers, and top level CIA administrators combine to squeeze every drop of oil from Middle East countries while simultaneously seducing Arab princes into a lifestyle of excess to the detriment of the liberalization of their helpless, good-hearted people. These evil American forces prevent Middle Eastern countries from achieving liberal democracy through their greed and ambition. Finally, Syriana strongly urges that these evil American forces of greed and ambition cause acts of international terrorism through the recruitment of desparate Muslims trapped in poverty.

Loony Clooney at work.
I refuse to see it. I can already write the basis of the plot:
America, bad. American business, evil and greedy. Middle Eastern types, exploited and understandably angry; we've asked for it, yada yada.
No dice.
Predictable "cultural Marxist" garbage. And I can't stand Clooney, anyway. What a dope. Hey Clooney: there's a war on, moron.
But thanks, drsbb, for the posting- it's a "heads up" and I appreciate that.
They will never show Syriana as in-flight entertainment because you can't bring bombs on planes.
At a production cost of 50MM and at the current rate of 27MM in 2 weeks, it will JUST break even. It will pick up a few bucks on DVD release but it is a loser by pretty much any standard measure.
The scenes keep jumping around between five or six sub-plots, and the producer never really ties them together into a coherent story. All that could save you from falling asleep would be for either Clooney or Damon to do something spectacular or at least to kick somebody's butt, but you wait in vain for this while you yawn.
Clooney was overweight, bearded and wimpy throughout. Matt Damon was married, but he seemed rather.... light in the loafers.
But if you want to see how an American businessman licks the boots of a Saudi Prince; how a CIA agent and his bosses bungle an assignment and then callously assassinate a "good guy" Saudi Prince, how greedy the American oil industry is, and how all of this somehow creates hard-working, well intended young muslims to become suicide bombers, then this is the one for you.
I delight in the fact that it has only made 30 million in the 5 weeks it has been out. I wonder how much it cost to make. I hope they lose money on it. It will be interesting to see how much Munich makes. It seems the right and the left don't want to see it. I guess that leaves the middle of the spectrum or those without strong political opinions to see this movie.
