No...not "slimy." If I live in a duplex...an small town southern cops try to break in (and I live in a small southern town...I know how they can be...but maybe not in this case...I don't know) on a raid and announce on one side while I'm asleep...and then try to come in the other side...my side where my 2 boys are....guess what...somebody's getting shot. You better be announcing the whole time because I am a heavy sleeper. I am going to protect my children....and if you don't announce and I don't here you and you get shot...it's not slimy...it's an accident. And guess what...if you break in to find drugs and get shot (with above circumstances)...and then there are no drugs...not only is it an accident...but someone ELSE screwed up.
If you can't understand that side of the story...if that's how it happened...than I can't help you. God help your family if anyone ever breaks in on them in the middle of the night...they're hosed because you can't protect them...you'll waste to much time making sure there wasn't an announcement.

Too many of these Gestapo style raids are being conducted by cops around this country and end up killing and or maiming innocent Citizens.
It's long past time that this bullshit was stopped. Sorry that the cop got killed, but in my honest opinion he should have refused to bust down a door without knocking first.
This No Knock policy is what the problem is.

A man asleep in his own home. His baby is one occupant. If the other occupant had not been his wife/girlfriend, I'm sure the article would have given it passing comment, purely on the basis of the oddness of the situation What I took from that was that there were three people total in the whole of the duplex. But then, I'm not properly awake yet.

No but when I am relying on second hand reports of something I like them to be consistent.
That is one BIG inconsistency and that makes me wonder how much reliance I should put in the rest of what they are writing

Don't pretend. Your filth is already posted.
I put revenue agents, "Just doing my job" in the same class as NAZI prison guards executing the prisoners, after all they were "Just doing their job!".

This No Knock policy is what the problem is.Right. It's not fair to deprive the perps of the opportunity to arm themselves in self-defense and/or dispose of evidence. < /sarcasm >

TheAgitator is adding more facts:
"I haven't yet seen the warrant myself. But the clerk confirmed to me over the pohne that Cory Maye's name wasn't anywhere on it. Now have a look at this AP story from January 2004. The article was written after Maye was sentenced to death, more than two years after the shooting. Relevant excerpt:
...
Jones was one of eight officers conducting a search warrant looking for illegal drugs at two apartments on Mary Street in Prentiss on Dec. 26, 2001. Shortly after Jones entered Maye's bedroom, he was shot in the chest, the bullet missing his protective vest."
Apparently no warrant.

And, who do we believe? Did he have a record? Criminals lie automatically, and LEOs are not always 100% truthful, especially when in the CYA mode. You got that right. One of my best friends is a cop. Cops don't give other cops DUI's...they get a drive home even when they are well over the legal limit and should be hauled to jail...when you or I would go to jail. Cops get to speed...when you or I would get a ticket. When their butts are on the line...cops are JUST like most people...they cover theur tracks to make sure they don't go to jail. Paragon of virtue my butt. Chances are...the truth will only be known by those who were there...and those cops may think they announced loud enough...but to a guy asleep...he doesn't think so.
Bet next raid they "announce" a little louder...what do you think?

It is amazing how many people, based on a few paragraphs of information of unknown validity, are willing to overturn the death penalty given after a jury of 12 heard all the evidence (the convicted DID have a defense attorny, didn't he?).
And I doubt ANY death penalty is administered in America without one or two appeals courts reviewing the case.
But hey! There has been an internet post of a few sentences, so we now know it was some facist, hate-filled amatuer southern cops brutally attacking this sweet paragon of virtue!
Sorry - the odds of the posters here knowing squat all about what really happened is near zero.

Bet next raid they "announce" a little louder...what do you think? Something else that sticks in my mind:
From the original post:
"After I fired the shots, I heard them yell 'police! police!'
Sounds like maybe they knew that Maye didn't know they were cops?
I'd love to read a transcript of the trial
FWIW- I have now seen blogs on both sides of the political spectrum condemning this. Need more info of course- but sofar it doesn't appear to be some kind of knee-jerk leftist anti-cop thing.

Be sarcastic all you want but this is a freedom issue. Cory was free to commit murder, the jury was free to convict him.

Thanks for posting the official version of the event. It doesn't wash. This was a serious police F*-up, no questions asked, and an innocent man is going to die for it.
