Ok, I'll stop the geek talk :)

No problem... I understand what you said. Sounds like a nice setup.

The screensaver is crashing my system....any idea why?

No idea... everyone's machine is a bit different. I haven't tried running it in that mode, but why bother messing with the screensaver mode instead of just running the GUI client as is? It only grabs unused CPU cycles... if it interferes with how the machine is running tweak the option to use less of the CPU. I've been running it on several machines and have not noticed any degradation at all.

I am series jealous of your hardware, in the way that Maureen Dowd is jealous of Zeta-Jones.

What you got is way better than what I got, and we both know it.

Ya know, it has been over a YEAR since I bought any new toys ...

Hey good job on finding that info. I have never looked it up, just the Top 100.

What's the deal on team # 5 and team # 11? Misprint? Someone start out on a 486 and forget to upgrade?

It looks like the jump into the Top 1500 may be accomplished by the end of the year.

Just added another (slow) machine at work to the project.

What is the fastest client for XP bloatware? I haven't noticed an update after 5.03.

Also, can I disable WinFAH.exe and still operate properly? That file seems to load the tray icon, and I don't like any tray icons popping up.

Disabling it appears to shut it down, but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks, I did just that. Disabled the screen saver function, and it is running fine. I did take CPU usage down to about 80% just for good measure.

What is the fastest client for XP bloatware? I haven't noticed an update after 5.03.

5.03 is the graphical client. The console version can be installed as a service (download the 5.04beta here: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/FAH504-Console.exe)

The GUI and or screensaver versions give you the pretty animations, but that slows down the completion of each WU by a few %. To install the console version as a service you can just doubleclick on the downloaded file, but I like to have a configuration link instead (that won't actully begin folding). Create a link to the above file, rename it "Configration only" or something similar. Right click on the new shortcut, click "properties", and in the "target" box add the -configonly switch (should end like this: (your path)\FAHConsole-5.04beta.exe -configonly). Save your changes, then doubleclick on the shortcut. Answer yes to install as a service (you can also specify reported memory, IDLE CPU percentage to use, and a few other parameters).

Installing as a service will ensure that the folding occurs anytime the OS is up. Install the console version into the same directory as the GUI client, and note the program is the executable, there is not installation/setup necessary. End your current WU, uninstall the GUI client, and then install the service as above. Reboot, or use "services.msc" to start the F@H service.

Also, can I disable WinFAH.exe and still operate properly? That file seems to load the tray icon, and I don't like any tray icons popping up.

WinFAH is the executable, which also controls the icon. Running the console version is totally transparent to users (If you load it on a server, I would limit the CPU to less than 75% on a large network).

If installed as a service, you can use some third party utilities to view progress of each WU. Under task manager you'll see process "FahCore_nn" and FAHConsole-504beta.exe, the former is the specific core for that WU in progress, the latter controls sending/retrieving WU's and other related processes - don't end either one.

Bump! Finished my first WU last night - working on #2 now... this one has 450 less frames, heh... but the time per frame is much longer. Glad to see FR Team moving up!
