Another one took place during basic. He and his platoon were picked to wait tables for the Jewish men for Passover. Some waited tables, some unloaded trucks loaded with the Passover wine and capons (castrated roosters). Several cases of wine and several frozen capons didn't make it to the kitchen that night, and Dad and his buddies had one heck of a party!!!!
While he was in Korea, he almost made Lieutenant, until he busted one (literally! Dad said he was a "dumba$$") and was busted back to private. Before his tour ended, he was back to Corporal and almost made Sargent, because he was the section chief for his battery of 105's. When he rotated out, during the 5 week trip from Tokyo to Seattle, the war ended...
Dad passed away on 29 January 1997, from complications following heart surgery, age 66 years 7 months. I miss him......
Sounds like a great man. It is priceless when you have someone like that who will share his stories with you as a youngster. You are very fortunate to have had him as your father.
