The president can say its not an amnesty, and he can repeat it all day long. But the fact remains that he will be issuing visas to millions of illegals. Call it whatever you wish.
I know people who, right now, are trying to obtain visas legally. Its very difficult, even with all your ducks in a row. Much easier it would be for them to just forget it, and count on getting one of Bush's transitional visas later.
If Bush wants people to believe him, he can start by sealing the border, and stopping the inflow of illegals. To legalize millions, while leaving the border open, is to rob citizenship of its meaning.
We admit 1.3 million immigrants each year, illegals and legal ones combined. Who decided that was a good number? Who decided it should be 1.3 and not 2 million, or 200,000? When did we have that national debate? When did anyone ask our view on the matter?
This is not a discussion about whether or not your gardener is a good person. This is a discussion about the rules of citizenship. In a democracy we agree to be ruled by our neighbors, to share our individual sovereignty with our fellows. But we do not agree to be ruled by just anyone, which is where citizenship laws and immigration laws and residency laws come in. We refuse to be ruled by those who would hurt us, which is why felons lose their vote. We refuse to be ruled by people who don't share our view of constitutional government, which is why we limit immigration to numbers that can be assimilated.
Immigration policy should always be developed with the interests of citizens in mind. It should not be made for the purpose of changing demographics, manipulating voter patterns, or labor costs, it should always serve the interests of citizens. Is that so difficult to understand?
