I showed up to court once to fight a traffic ticket and I had a good feeling about it when the police officer didn't show up to testify. As it turned out the judge just set a new court date.

What a wonderful primer for breaking the law and making the rest of the taxpayers pay for a cop and a judge to set aside time to accommodate some jackasses wanting to avoid personal responsibility for their own stupidity. That's just great. Tell your friends now...y'hear?

Of all the times I've got pulled over, I've only got a ticket 1/3 of the time (and I'm not pretty girl, I'm a dude). I find be respectful and non-confrontational goes a long way. Contrast that with my best friend, whose first words before the cop speaks is "Why'd you pull me over!?! You have no right to pull me over!". He's paid a lot of money to the local counties over the years...

Anyone not breaking the speed limit on a major highway is a rolling roadblock and a danger to other drivers on the road. Current highway speed limits are grossly inappropriate to modern vehicles and common driving habits, and the only reason I can think of why they have not been raised is that low speed limits produce revenue for state/local governments.

True Story: Cop: License and registration, please.
Me: You can't be serious?
Cop: Why can't I?
Me: Did you see that car pass me?
Cop: You mean the Lincoln that was doing 90?
Me: Yes. (thinking NO SHIT SHERLOCK!!)
Cop: Yeah, I saw him, but I had you for doing 70 and didn't feel like chasing him.

80 on the 405 this must be a story from the 60'sThe 405 is not a freeway. It's usually a slow moving parking lot.

A friend of mine said that he went in and offered to pay a fine instead of contesting it outright (maybe someone here knows more about this). They fined him and wrote it up as "Improper equipment" or something like that, which amounts to no points on his license. And the local municipality gets the revenue they wanted, anyway.

So, if you feel your ticket was unwarranted, ask for your day in court you could walk out a winner.Funny, but, it seems like it would have been more accurate to summarize the article more along the lines of, "Go to traffic court even if you're guilty. You just might luck out" (which is quite true).

Current highway speed limits are grossly inappropriate to modern vehicles and common driving habits, and the only reason I can think of why they have not been raised is that low speed limits produce revenue for state/local governments.Back during the gas shortage in the 70's, speed limits were dropped from 70 to 55 to save fuel. After the shortage, they all jumped on the "55 Saves Lives" bandwagon to divert attention that they weren't raising the speed limit back again. But yeah, bottom line, most all roads are built for higher speeds but if the county or state can ticket more folks then they'll not raise the speed.

That's how it worked when I lived in Jersey...our city cops would ticket anyone with an out-of-state license plate, and when the court date came around, they'd knock the ticket to a no-points offense if they'd just pay the original fine. 99 percent of the people just paid....and probably never came through again.

If it happens again, if you didn't try this, make a motion to dismiss due to the state's inability to produce a witness. You upheld your promise to appear in court and shouldn't have to reappear.
