The Hartford Courant and CT Public Television have initiated a full frontal attack on sprawl--a take no prisoners ultra-biased brainwashed effort to create their dream of urban high rises connected by mass transit throughout the state. No other opinions are wanted or needed.

In this day and age, urbanization is becoming irrelevant.

As more and more service oriented industries and technology industries become information based, the necessity to concentrate a workforce in a small, limited area, where the costs of living and competition for labor increase the cost of labor, these businesses will start to harness the increasing availability of high bandwidth networks, compression, and encryption to optimize their labor costs.

Already companies like IBM, HP, Apple, and other hitech industrial companies are shifting to technologies that allow their employees to work out of their homes, reducing the need for office space. Digital workflow technologies from Adobe, Oracle, and Microsoft continue to move forward and in about 3 years many small to medium businesses will start adopting these digital workflow solutions, which will further degrade the necessity for "office" real estate.

Cities will always be relevant for the businesses that require onsite manpower, such as factories and manufactories - but the white collar jobs will begin to shift outward toward the suburban and especially rural areas. Engineering and design specialists, lawyers (not trial lawyers), accountants, financial advisors, etc. will all begin to work at home to save money and often clients won't know the difference.

Take VoIP technology. A home office could have a phone that is directly tied to the phone exchange system in the main office, complete with a direct dial phone number with the area code of the main office.

Video conferencing. It has reached a point where a simple web cam and a fast home computer can host a four way video conference, and this number will increase as our digital infrastructure and compression increase in sophistication.

Digital workflow. This technology is becoming more and more sophisticated, with the problems with a digital workflow being ironed out with every advancement in the software.

I'm optimistic that in 15 years we'll start to see serious shifts in the demographics of our cities. Cities will never disappear though because of their innate quality of concentrating labor pools, and where there is labor willing to work - work often follows. All that's needed is low taxes, fair trade regs, and lots and lots of coffee.

I HATE sprawl too. Unlike the lefties, however, I see it as the result of free choice in a free society. I may not like what my fellow Americans consider a good lifestyle (via 40+ mile commutes just so they can have a "new house with land"), but I don't plan on pushing a law to stop their pursuit of happiness.

When said companies start reducing their a-s ugly suburban "campuses" (some of them are) then I will be a happy man. What a waste of land over in Redmond.

Many of them will probably reduce their campuses, but many more will build up their suburban campuses.

There's a lot to be said for such infrastructure. Software and tech R&D really does work better when you get brilliant people together in the same room. Perhaps that might be how things will work out... the campuses will be reduced to collections of the most brilliant mathematical and engineering minds in the world, with the grunt work and "detailing" work handed off to the dispersed technician engineer workforces for whom proximity to fellow employees does not lead to increased productivity.

What the lefties don't get is that is their urban policies that have made a major contribution to sprawl.

They have encouraged a minority urban culture of generations of gangstas produced by unwed teenage mothers.

Since the middle class (black, brown, and white) dosen't like being victimized by these media heroes they have fled.

The lefties have also created a culture of affirmative action and special preferences for select groups--so those not blessed with the correct ancestry or skin pigmentation don't stick around their urban institutions to be abused.
