VANCOUVER A transsexual who was fired by B.C. Ferries last year after she confused starboard and port and steered a ship in the wrong direction has accused the company of discrimination, saying she was held to a higher standard than other employees because of her sex.
Deborah Magnone filed a complaint with the B.C. human rights tribunal and yesterday, the tribunal rejected a bid by B.C. Ferries to have the complaint dismissed. That means the case will proceed to a public hearing, unless the parties can resolve the matter.
Magnone, who was hired as a casual deckhand on May 25, 2004, has admitted she misinterpreted an order to turn to starboard and instead turned to port while working as a quartermaster and steering a vessel Sept. 12, 2004, but said the mistake was minor.
Magnone also admitted she made another mistake the next day and steered a vessel contrary to the captains order. Magnone was on probation as a new employee at the time.
Magnone, who told the tribunal shes been a mariner for years and has extensive skill and training, admitted the incidents occurred but said she believed the ships captain, Peter Woo, was generally satisfied with her work.
It is Ms. Magnones belief that her work was considered acceptable until B.C. Ferries became aware of her former sexual identity, the tribunals summary says.
LOL ... knowing port from starboard isn't important in stearing a vessel - what's important is whether or not you're being discriminated against!
Are they sure they got the spelling right?
If this didn't come from Scrappleface it should have. This is just too freepin' funny.
Let me get this straight (pun intended), a transsexual was driving a ferry?
Knowing how to spell isn't important in steering a vessel either.
"Port" and "starboard" are obviously not the only concepts this individual has trouble with... "man" and "woman" seem to be equally difficult to HIM.
Ping!
Seems "IT" doesn't know "gangplank" from "bung hole" either.
I think he/she's confused about more than just "port" and "starboard"....
And IT admits it made a wrong turn. Well I guess thats a start, though I think somethings have been "adjusted" to a point IT can't go completely back.;)
LOL - doesn't know which direction! (Too funny)
Sounds like the person in question didn't know *their* port from their starboard...
...was immediately re-hired by AC/DC Ferries.
1. I wonder the following:
When many people "rent" sail boats, row boats, or other watercraft. Many rental companies require that you pass a "basic" seamanship test. And usually there are questions about which side is Port, which side is StarboardDid she get her years of experience on the "Good Ship Lollipop", under Capt.Crunch?
2. Did she get her job with the company, because the company had to follow a "Affirmative Action" requirement? Why ain't Feinstien, Boxer, Hillary Clinton, or Gloria Steinem outraged that the job didn't go to a "REAL" woman.
3 to the port 5 to the starboard and nine straight up the middle, standby for fireworks. You would think any good tranny would know this.
