Id like to take a moment to coin a new phrase: Brownie Moment. A Brownie moment can be defined simply as the moment when a supporter of President Bush is smacked in the head by reality and loses any and all faith in the president from that moment forward. As you may have surmised the term comes from Bushs recent comment regarding former FEMA head Michael Browns leadership in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Brownie, youre doing a heck of a job.
This was my Brownie moment. I understand that in the world of politics leaders often have to say things they dont mean, or shake hands with dictators and scumbags, and do a lot of morally repugnant stuff. But when Bush said that I realized that after surveying the impotent, incompetent response of the federal government he truly, honestly believed that Brownie was doing a heck of a job. That sealed it for me. Id been turning sour on Bush for a while, but I was still generally supportive of him. When I heard him make that remark, however, that was it. That was my Brownie moment.
I bring this up in light of the Miers nomination. There are a whole lot of head-scratching Republicans gazing at each other wondering what the hell just happened. Could Bush really have nominated this woman to the Supreme Court? Yes, my friends, he just did. I imagine there are a whole lot of conservatives out there today who have just had their very own Brownie moment.
This is not to say that having had a Brownie moment the lack of faith in Bush is irreversible. Far from it. If Bush were to straighten up, get his act together, and really make an effort at becoming the president he was in the first three years of his first term then I would in all likelihood get firmly behind him again. But in the wake of the deteriorating situation in Iraq, his political impotence at implementing his agenda, the profligate expansion of government under his watch, and his failure to veto a single bill during five years in office, the Brownie comment was just too much.
That was my Brownie moment. And theres a whole country full of gobsmacked Republicans who just had theirs this morning.
I know. It's almost like they said "What can we do to depress the wages of American citizens?"
This is Bush's first throw of the dice. I honestly don't think he expects confirmation but the muddied waters may make the next nomination look a bit better. Just my musing.
Well said.
I've had enough "Brownie Moments" to fill 2 or 3 deli trays in the last 5 years. I like the term though.
"cronyism" is the favorite talking point for liberal moonbats and the LSM (lame stream media.) GWB will be President for three years and three months longer and in case you didn't know it, he is not running again. ;)
So all of you that are whining "he shoulda, coulda, woulda, if he'd only" crowd better get use to it and learn to enjoy your misery! ;)
I don't understand. Even the conservatives are complaining about cronyism. The reason it's a Dem talking point is because it gets them traction. Not the other way around.
"Why didn't President Bush nominate her late Friday instead of 8:00 AM on Monday?"
Because Bush and Cheney wanted to rest over the weekend.
Then on the day of the announcement, Cheney is doing Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity radio shows.
"show us the part of the constitution that gives him the power to "fix" the budget"
It gives him the power to veto. He hasn't used it one single time.
Ugh...
Congress would have to override the veto w/ a 2/3 majority.
"Another 'Brownie Moment';
T E M P O R A R Y - - - G U E S T - W O R K E R S
"
Vigilantes
Amen!
So?? They aren't allowed to rest??
Don't sit it out. Vote your conscience - whatever that might be. I voted Libertarian last time. Are they gonna win? 'Course not. But if they start to poll high enough it might eventually cause a shift in the platforms of one of the major parties (ie. they'll be forced to pander to get the votes).
What else can you do?
I'm hopeful that Bush and his advisers appreciated that fact and that this nominee is a sacrifice fly.
Food for thought.
Personally, I think Brown did the best he could with what he had to work with.
I would rather refer to these moments as "rude awakening" moments, like, the billions of $$$$ proposed to rebuild that cesspool down south, the nomination of Miers, the Gonzales thing, and OMG, the "temporary guest workers" thing, I'm sure there are more of these moments, maybe too numerous to list. Bush is beginning to lose his nerve, I'm beginning to think he just doesn't care because he doesn't have to worry about re-election.
I can't bring myself to vote Libertarian...not even as a protest vote. Those chumps are more for leaving the border wide open than the current administration.
"His selection of Roberts was criticized by conservatives as "not conservative enough". Now he is hailed as the perfect candidate"
By who? Are you saying someone who said he wasn't conservative enough has changed his mind?
What are you doing on this thread using reason and logic? Trying to get flamed? ;)
Yep. Brown did do a heck of a job.
