A&E "Investigative Reports" to air "Inside the NRA" on Wednesday, October 12 at 11:00am ET
Bill Kurtis ^ | Wednesday, October 12 at 11:00am ET | AETV

"A look at the powerful National Rifle Association, locked into battle for gun rights against anti-gun advocates. Probes such questions as: Who are the NRA's three million members? Is the NRA a radical right-wing group, or the last defenders of the Constitution's Second Amendment? Will Americans ever willingly give up their guns?"

Not probed are such questions as "Can A&E air an unbiased episode about guns and gun owners?", and "Is Bill Kurtis full of himself, or what?"

Program this into your TiVo now.

Although this is billed as a new episode, I have a feeling this may be the old 1999 show of the same name, given that the NRA is now up to four million members.

The NRA is a political machine that cares for the Second Ammendment just a little more than the GOP. They have a terrific pension for compromise, and selling out.

I dropped them like a bad habit years ago. I support the JPFO and recommend that all gun owners do likewise.

"They have a terrific pension for compromise"

How much does the pension pay, and when can I start collecting?

If I ever figure that one out, you'll be the first one I tell! :-)

I'll probably tape it and try and stomach it as much as I can.

It's penchant, not pension. I won't disagree with the compromise comment, but they are the 800lb gorillas of 2nd Amendment advocacy which garners respect (and fear) from the other side.

A continuing old wife's tale from another gun group.

The NRA has been compromising for the last forty years since we didn't have the votes in the congress, senate or the presidency.

Now more conservatives are in power, the NRA and the other gun groups are making better changes such as the concealed carry laws and the sunset of the Assault Weapons Ban. With the changes to the Supreme Court we may even see a ruling that would outlaw gun laws.

JPFO isn't even titled as a lobbying group. They have an educational status. Not that I don't admire them. They are making inroads into the largest dem party supporters.

Thanks for the ping, Shooter. Hiredhand, I cannot disagree with you more on your assesment of the NRA. Simply look at how quickly and effectively they responded to the nonsense going on down in New Orleans. I'm glad you support the JPFO, as I have been nothing but impressed with them as an organization. But to compare the NRA with the GOP is ludicrous. President Bush himselfr supported extending the assault weapons ban, while the NRA fought tooth and nail and succeeded in stopping it.

I feel that there are so many out there who want nothing more to disarm us that infighting between gun groups will only help them and hurt us. The RKBA is too important of a right to lose to pettiness and bickering.

When the NRA makes a concerted effort to get the 1968 GCA off the books, I'll take more notice of them. There's also a certain bill that Clinton signed back around 1994 which prohibits us "peons" from purchasing newly imported H&Ks which needs to be GONE. All in the name of "crime control" of course. Sheesh...I know I've sure felt a LOT safer since then. :-)

I could get people in big trouble INSIDE the NRA if I say too much, so I'll have to be a little more vague than I'd like to be.

I was a card carrying NRA member for almost 20 years but I've also got an old friend in the NRA who holds a reasonably high position in the organization. I've formed my opinions mainly from what HE has told me about the inner workings of the NRA. I've been able to contrast what he tells me against the info that the NRA wants the public to hear.

They've become organizationally "bloated" like every large, structured organization. What's more, eventually SOMEBODY is going to call their bluff, and then what are they going to tell their 4 million gun owning members? A bluff is only good as long as your willing to make "good" on it, and as best I can tell, they have no intention of doing that.

The last time I even considered re-upping my membership a couple of years ago, I first called my buddy (in the NRA) and he just laughed. He said it didn't really matter which RKBA group I belonged to, just so long as I supported ONE of them.

I don't dislike the NRA. I just don't believe in them enough, nor trust them enough to support them.

He was actually the one who recommended the JPFO.
