In a televised interview with former CBSer Marvin Kalb, retired CBS anchor Dan Rather stated that his network will not allow him to continue to pursue the story of President Bush's Air Guard service.
"Straight-up, no chaser, no," the exiled anchor said when asked if he would consider filing a story about it on the "60 Minutes" news magazine since he continues to believe in it.
"CBS News doesn't want me to do that story. They wouldn't let me do that story," Rather said, declining to elaborate further. (See it in WMV or RealMedia video.)
Rather also expressed suspicion about bloggers' role in publicizing CBS's mistakes in the whole Memogate affair.
"There are some strange, and to me, still mysterious things, certainly unexplained things that happened about how it got attacked and why, even before the program was over," Rather said, adding that his network was derelict in not "knowing enough of how quickly bloggers could strike."
The anchor appeared to have softened his attitudes toward some (unamed) web authors but remained suspicious about "those bloggers who were partisan politically affiliated and/or had ideological axe to grind with us" in the exposition of the document scandal.
Asked about his long-time fascination with the word courage, Rather said it was his father's favorite word and also one of his own, adding that "Sometimes saying it, giv[es] me my best chance to mount maybe just a wee, small part of it."

It is far more amazing that Dan-o and Mary Mapes thought they could get away with such a crude and obvious fraud. And when they got busted they act all surprised.
FR is a "blog"?
Jim is an active Air Force officer?
Buckhead is a website?
And on and on and on. They just can't stand it, that they can't still lie and lie and LIE and get away with it and we won't allow them to manipulate an election with tromped up, phony, FRAUDULENT garbage. LOL
You're still famous and giving Rather and Kalb the willies! LOL
I motion that from now on we address JimRob as "Air Force General JimRob". And oh yeah, congrats on that web site Buckhead. ;)
Check out the first chapter of Mary Mapes' book at Amazon:

Hat tip to PowerLine.
Maybe we should ask Jim first. After all, this is his "blog".
And isn't it nice to know that this is still REALLY killing Rather and Kalb? hehehehehehehehehe
Oooooh, that Dan Rather. What a cagey one he is. You just can't slip anything by him. What an investgative reporting dynamo he is.
Oh, and Dan.....Free Republic IS NOT A FREAKIN' BLOG!
We are the Pajamahedeen!
I hope that this book of hers lands in the remainder bin ASAP.
We all should sign up and post what we think of this lie riddled book !
She can't even get that right. It is called 'proportional spacing' Mary.
And you want us to believe that all of your methods and hard work were above reproach simply because CBS News was at the top of your paycheck? Please.
Lol. How sweet it is.
It is ironic how high she was thinking she had brought down the president only to realize it was her that was going down. Still no signs of CBS even remotely admitting the documents were forged. Mary and Dan are still standing behind the memo and don't evem seem to entertain the idea that the memo might be fake. In their little imaginary world, it is only the rightwing who engage in partisan politics and leftwingers are unbiased pillars of truth.
How sad that Dan doesn't even know the details of his own demise.
Oh, he knows alright. Deep, deep down, he knows..
Straight up... no chaser Dan... I'd love to b-slap your fat, ugly a$$.

Marcel Matley's review was initially limited to Killian's signature on one of the Burkett documents, which he compared to signatures from the official Bush records. Matley "seemed fairly confident" that the signature was Killian's. On September 6, Matley was interviewed by Rather and Mapes and was provided with the other four documents obtained from CBS (he would prove to be the only reviewer to see these documents prior to the segment). Matley told Rather "he could not authenticate the documents due to the fact that they were poor quality copies." (Panel Report, p. 98-99). In the interview, Matley told Rather that with respect to the signatures, they were relying on "poor material" and that there were inconsistencies in the signatures, but also replied "Yes," when asked if it would be safe to say the documents were written by the person who signed them. (Panel Report, p.101)See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killian_documents
Also, she fails to mention that the other experts she hired to look at overall authenticity told her the documents were no good based on typography issues, or that she lied about what they had said. She also fails to mention CBS lied to Hodges, that General Staudt had been retired for 18 months, that she hooked Burkett up w/ Joe Lockhart, that Burkett would not authenticate the documents, that Burkett was a notorious and unstable crank, that the family cast doubt on the documents, etc., etc., etc. It goes on and on and on.
I'll have you know, this is a journalist talking. They always check their facts, so don't ever question or correct them.
Marvin Kalb is right about one thing. He really is Old Media.
"Ahh but the strawberries, that's where I had them..."
