Man gets 30 days for slapping infant
by E.C. Shanor
SOUTH PARIS - An admitted child abuser will have to spend 30 days in jail for slapping an infant. William Babbidge, 26, of Rumford pled guilty in Oxford County Superior Court, Monday, to a felonious assault. The victim was an eight-week-old infant. The child's mother had left Babbidge, her live-in boyfriend, to babysit while she was at work. When she returned, hours later, she noticed that the side of the child's head was black-and-blue, the marks resembling a hand print. According to police reports submitted to the court, Babbidge claimed that he'd momentarily left the little girl on the floor and she crawled over to the wall and struck her head on a door jamb. The baby's grandparents, who lived nearby, insisted that the baby be taken to the hospital and the police notified, which the mother immediately did. At Rumford Community Hospital, the medical staff reported the suspicious marks to the police and the Child Protective Office of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Rumford Police Officer Charles Beale and Lieutenant Stacy Carter investigated Babbidge's claim and arrested him for the assault. Their report, which was included in the court file, cited an emergency room physician who said an eight-week-old infant could not have rolled over and crawled 15 feet to the doorstop, which would have been necessary for her to have struck her head as Babbidge claimed. In a letter to the court, the baby's mother claimed that the child's hearing is still being evaluated for possible damage caused by the blow. Babbidge is a six-foot, 200 pound man, court records indicated. The defendant entered a plea of guilty to the assault, a class C felony, which could have carried a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Justice Ellen A. Gorman went along with a plea agreement reached by Assistant District Attorney Joseph O'Connor and Babbidge's lawyer, Margot Joly, of Winslow. He was sentenced to two years in prison, with all but 30 days suspended, which he can serve at the Oxford County Jail. After his release, Babbidge will be on probation for two years and must complete evaluation and treatment for impulse control to the satisfaction of his probation officer. In addition, he cannot have contact with the child. If he fails to comply with the special conditions or violates any other probation rule, all or part of the suspended 23 months of his probation can be revoked.
One more year of these two, God help us.
I hope the mother dumps this piece of garbage. Any person who would slap and 8 week old is a very dangerous predator and he should have gotten 30 years for this crime not 30 days. I don't think there is anything on the face of this earth that makes me madder than child or animal abusers.
Shoot the SOB!!
If that was MY kid, he never would have made it to jail!
I HATE BALDACCI!!!

AMEN TO THAT!
About mid body with a 12 gauge!
What makes me even madder is this left wing liberal judge, but, thank God, one day she will be judged. (Hebrews 9:27)
Man,I can't stand it when someone hurts a baby...
BTW, didja catch the front page of The Lewiston paper?
A sex offender has been appointed to the Maine Revenue Service..
This pervert will be going into peoples homes, mind you!
I used to be disgusted, now I'm just amused..
Ms.B
30 days in Maine, doesn't sound like much punishment-some would even consider it a dream vacation.
I hope the baby dumps the mother
Notice how often it's the "mother's boyfriend" who abuses her children? Women owe it to their children to be careful what kind of "boyfriend" they bring into their homes. Wonder how much she knew about this guy?
