""Ah, I can imagine the U.S. without NO easily.""

I see you are from GA. Too bad they rebuilt Atlanta after it was burnt down. So, imagine if Atlanta was destroyed this week. I can imagine the world without Atlanta too. All we have from Atlanta is Coca Cola, Ted Turner and CNN. I think the world could live without two of the three above mentioned things./sarcasm

Hey, at least Atlanta isn't 10 feet below sea level. And if it gets raized, I don't expect BILLIONS from the Government. I am not against aid for NO, I am against rebuilding it as it was - to be flooded again, and the amout being considered.

Mail to tell them we will not accept our money being wasted on something it is not specifically earmarked. For instance $5 million dollars was spent on a fancy fountain out of levee money... that is criminal in light of this storm. I representatives (Senate and Congress) need to know their constituents are watching and we are sympathetic, not brain-dead.

A chicken in every pot and a Boston Whaler at every doorstep. We might even see fancy new schoolbuses with bathrooms, kitchenettes and outboard motors..

There used to be a lot more land in those marshes. Had the coastal erosion been dramatically reduced the storm surge would not have been so bad. Now I understand why everyone south of I-10 was told to evacuate when Lili was aimed right at us. There is less land between the Gulf and interstate now. I'm glad that storm turned away and went in a fairly unpopulated area.

Only the yellow dog dems voted for Kerry here. Most of the southerners just couldn't support a Massachusettes poser.

Should we rebuild Mississippi even though it has been wiped out twice in the last 36 years?

Most of the insurance claims for Mississippi has been for windstorm. Which is either directly written by commercial insurers or by state windstorm pools. The rates for such coverage is more in line with the risk. Unlike the FEMA program which is directly subsidized by taxpayers. So, in essence, New Orleans flood claims will be paid by Eskimos.

Over the past two decades windstorm building requirements have vastly improved. New buildings built on the coast can be constructed much better and can withstand much more. And, because of the way FEMA maps for additional high-risk flood zones after major storms they can at least redline out areas that they now know are more prone to flooding or require building elevation prior to allowing building to be rebuilt. That is not the case in New Orleans. THEY CANNOT BUILD ABOVE THE FLOOD PLAIN! And current technology does not allow for the building of "Atlantis" like buildings that are waterproof.

I like George Bush but he's once again spending money like a drunken fool if he rebuils New Orleans. It's a very very very bad investment.

I'm not sure who is the bigger fool, the people that want to build and live in a hole surrounded by water or the morons that want to spend tax dollars on such a dumb thing.

"I thank you the American tax payer for your generosity". Don't thank us, thank the politicians who will throw buckets of money at you to boost their poll numbers. We, the American tax payers, are about to get screwed big-time, and aren't even getting kissed first.
