Nearly a full week went by, while thousands were dying and starving or were kenneled in unbelievable filth in New Orleans. Nobody seemed to be in charge.

I made the same observation. Nobody seemed to be in charge. Where was the Governor, Kathleen Blanco?

George W. Bush was not slow to prepare for last week's disaster.
Bush declared a state of emergency for Louisiana on Aug. 27. That was two days before Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. The declaration started the process to assemble federal resources. All Blanco had to do was ask. Yet, she seemed capable of doing nothing more than being outraged at looters and crying over the whole thing.

Once again the left is completely ignoring reality....it really is amazing how ignorant and naive one must be not to see where things fell apart.

The preceding 24-48 hours are critical with the approach of a storm like Katrina.....during those 48 hours the State and Local LA officials did little to prepare for what was to come. Even after the levee's failed, they wasted time in getting the FEMA and the Feds involved....yet the left dismisses this fact as if they were powerless in doing anything to lessen the effects of the devastation to come.....truly amazing.....

This doesn't dismiss any culpability the Fed's may have had, but reality dictates that the local officials really blew it.

Even with all of that being said....even if the local officials were prepared to a much better degree, even if FEMA was even better prepared than they were, the devastation reeked by Katrina was overwhelming and could not have been handled with all the preparations that were in place (or should have been in place locally).....they were simply overwhelmed.

Most emergency relief is reactionary. One way to better react is to have a more resources in place before the emergency arises....Unfortunately, the cost in staging these resources a head of time will be large, and when weighed against the likelyhood of the event, may not be cost justified. Honestly, how many land falling Cat 4/5 Hurricanes in the past needed more than the relief offered by FEMA after the event?

To those that don't know how federal help works. The state Gov has to request Fed help...she did this after the fact. The bush team begged her to let them take over and because of the hatred of the left this is what happens...then we have the mayor that is now blaming the gov so he doesn't look bad. I wonder how these people sleep at night...pretty well I would imagine.

Let's hep the people first then we can play the blame game and trust me it was all recored the offer for help that was rejected by Blanco and Nagin the Friday bedore the storm hit.
You need to blame the source...not the outcome but we all know how liberals do it...don't we.

The fact that the great majority of those seeking refuge and rescue were African-American, and that no help came in the first five or six days...

Lies. MSM was showing helicopter rescues on Tuesday; the day after the hurricane. FEMA staged equipment and personnel before the storm even struck. The Navy was moving ships into the area within a day or two of the storm. The Army sent 400 helicopters in as soon as the LA Governor asked for them. Air Force Combat Control Teams and Para-rescue units were mobilized on Wednesday, less than 48 hours from the time the hurricane struck.

The only way into the area was by air. The I-10 bridges were destroyed near the LA/MS border and Hwy 90 was covered with debris. I'm betting that the after-actions reports show that the military did an incredible job.

Gee Weiner, maybe Governor Blanco, whose name means WHITE in Spanish, had something to do with no help for blacks for 5 or 6 days.

For a second I thought you were posting the blog of a guy I know. Same exact nonsense. He spends more time writing about blaming Bush for everything than almost anything else.

Tens of thousands of New Orleans residents -- those mostly too poor to have been able to evacuate the city -- were herded into mass structures like the Superdome and Convention Center, locked inside, and then no government agency provided food, water, medicine, sanitation care, removal of the dead, etc. This wasn't local government's role.

Well, the only thing I can conclude is that the Mayor of N O and the Governor of Louisiana are completely unnecessary political commodities.

Perhaps, if you buy into the libs arguments, that applies to all other states and municipalities as well.

If GWB is responsible and accountable for everything that happens in every city and podunk hamlet between NY and LA, let's get rid of the state and local governments and save ourselves a whole bunch of taxpayer $$.

You and I, no matter for whom we voted in 2004

Any guesses?

The polemic is not complete. A complete polemic needn't be any longer than this declamation nor more logical, just more focused. There have been some very creative conspiracies proposed in the past week.

But... if Kerry had been in office he would have had a "plan". You would know it by going to his website.

Perhaps it is just that the good Dr. Whiner has a faulty fact checker? Oops! make that "Dr. Weiner has a bad fact checker."

On that assumption here is the email I addressed to him moments before:

Dr. Weiner,

Having read your article, I was unable to answer the following questions and therefore find myself having to address them to you.

1. Were you aware of the calls from Washington to both the Mayor of New Orleans AND the Governor of Louisiana placed well before the storm, and that these calls emphatically requested immediate evacuations be started according to the existing evacuation plans?

2. Were you aware that, in clear disobedience to the Louisiana evacuation plan calling for the use of school buses, the only school bus to escape being flooded with four feet of water was the one that was commandeered by a student and used to drive some 70 people to Houston?

3. Were you aware of the Governor's stubborn refusal to authorize federal help/imposition of martial law?

4. If you were not aware of the above issues, when might one expect a correction to be published, and where might it be published?

I am asking about these issues because I plan to make this article a recommended reading for my students and am trying to arrange,in advance, for answers to the questions which I am sure they will raise.

Sincerely,

Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to when the answer will arrive?

"The day after the 12th of Never" has already been suggested.

So if Bush is blamed for 10,000 deaths in New Orleans- does he get credit for 490,00 survivors?
