Im generally an optimist, and its been my pleasure to be able to write mostly about the good and the noble things in our lives. But the events in the Gulf of Mexico have brought to a head a summer and a year that has been getting progressively uglier and more painful to watch.
Who can not see the way the country has changed, not since 9/11, but before that since the 2000 election? Who cannot feel the split, the division, that rips like a shredding sail on a broken mast, canvas tearing like the sound of musketry, as the rigging falls to the deck?
This breaks my heart. It just breaks my heart into little pieces. I have said less and less as I see more and more, because deep in my core I still dont want to believe that some Americans could willfully and consistently do such destructive things out of such petty and base motivations, things which in time will make the horrors of New Orleans look like a flea circus in a small tent, with the much larger carnival raging unseen in the background.
Ive taken sides in these essays, obviously thats what I do. But I have never, until now, felt the need to take the gloves off and really let fly. I always feared I would regret it, later. I still do. Only now, I fear I will regret it worse if I do not.
So now we must look at Tribes.

Hey guys wake up. This article is really outstanding and, given the current toxic climate, deserves to be circulated as widely as possible.

This is a long, but very worthwhile essay. In it, Whittle dismantles the liberal idea of race and class, and replaces it with one of culture, of tribe. People tend to associate with those who share similar values, and who behave in a similar manner. Members of the group can be of very different physical makeup, and even of different religion, and different countries of origin.

Moral Clarity BUMP !
This ping list is not author-specific for articles I'd like to share. Some for the perfect moral clarity, some for provocative thoughts; or simply interesting articles I'd hate to miss myself. (I don't have to agree with the author all 100% to feel the need to share an article.) I will try not to abuse the ping list and not to annoy you too much, but on some days there is more of the good stuff that is worthy of attention. You can see the list of articles I pinged to lately on my page.
You are welcome in or out, just freepmail me (and note which PING list you are talking about). Besides this one, I keep 2 separate PING lists for my favorite authors Victor Davis Hanson and Orson Scott Card.

Give it a read, a patient one. He doesn't use big words, and he isn't brief, he sometimes goes the long way around, a risky venture in a short-attention-span world, but his understanding and insight are HUGE.
I'll be the first to admit that this essay, while good, is not his best. He's written so much great stuff he faces a very high water mark to surpass his previous best. But if you truly take the time to read his last essay: Eject! Eject! Eject!: SANCTUARY (part 1) I promise you you will not be sorry.
