NY Times Calls Army Corps of Engineers $2.7 Billion Flood Control A "Boondoggle"

NYT - "Anyone who cares about responsible budgeting and the health of America's rivers and wetlands should pay attention to a bill now before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. The bill would shovel $17 billion at the Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and other water-related projects -- this at a time when President Bush is asking for major cuts in Medicaid and other important domestic programs. Among these projects is a $2.7 billion boondoggle on the Mississippi River that has twice flunked inspection by the National Academy of Sciences."

You know what gets me about all the whining is that this is a disaster that is unprecedented in American history. Hindsight is 20/20.

The best we can do is try to clean up, comfort the survivors, and learn from our mistakes.

So if NOLA had perfect levees, then it might have gotten hit by a meteor and people would still be whining about why did they spend all the money on the levees when they knew it was possible a meteor was coming.

Unexpected things happen. You can be sure of that.

Perhaps this has been mentioned by someone before, but I was watching FNC yesterday and they were interviewing black Comedian Steve Harvey.

Harvey was saying that someone told him they had seen an untethered barge crash into the concrete levee and that is what caused it to fail. I have not seen anything else about this anywhere.

Take a look at the Red/Blue electoral map. The Blue follows the water, down the coasts, up the Mississippi, and around the Great Lakes, the most vulnerable area to natural disaster. But they are the first to b!tch that rest of the country is to blame for their lack of planning.

The motto of the NYT used to be all the news that's fit to print. Now it's gone over to the Sun's whatever gets people talking.

Yep, I can't understand all the whining and blame-seeking -- some of the MSM make it sound like our President caused a hurricane.

But sorry, I do feel there have been some mistakes in how this has been handled, there are some hard questions to ask here, this must not happen again like this. And before anyone jumps too hard on me for saying the above, the point for me isn't to just say again and again we're the best, the point for me is how do we make ourselves better.

There -- I've made my first post!

...so FNC is supposed to lend credence to a rumor because it came from the mouth of a celebrity? If the rumor checked out, you can bet Fox or some other News organization would be running with it right now. After all, the name-of-the-game is to "Get Bush". If the levee's breaking can be shown to be directly man-made, so much the better.

I realize it is unconfirmed. However, the concrete levee was supposed to have been in good condition. A barge crashing into it is a plausible reason why it might have failed.

And if the break was caused by a barge, it puts the lie to the idea that it failed as a result of lack of funding.

Drudge needs to get the siren going on this story. It's the NYT and the Sierra Club's fault. Nice job.
