Media Mangles Story of Racial Implications in Disaster Response

Some facts the Pasadena Star News omitted in its story "Black Leaders Angered by Slow Aid to Survivors," Pasadena Star News, Sept. 3, 2005 (http://www2.pasadenastarnews.com/news/ci_2997132)

along with its many "outraged" letter writers over the misperceived racial inequities in the disaster response: (http://www2.pasadenastarnews.com/opnyourview/ci_299658)

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is a Black-American.

Almost all the New Orleans City Council are Black-Americans, reflecting the 67% black residents of New Orleans.

The Sheriff is a Black-American.

Major media reporter Geraldo reported that a large group of Vietnamese immigrant flood victoms of Hurricane Katrina refused any aid until everybody else was helped. Apparently, Vietnamese may be more accustomed in their culture to waiting out typhoons. Geraldo reported the Vietnamese were a "Sea of tranquility" among the chaos.

No special media coverage was given to the many "invisible" illegal immigrants from Mexico who presumably suffered equally through the hurricane.

Neither Mayor Nagin nor Governor Blanco took the following actions which they should have:

1. Ordered evacuation of low-lying areas of New Orleans prior to onset of the hurricance.

2. Ordered martial law on day one.

3. Commandeered all the school buses to relocate people. The photo above shows 200 school buses sitting unused in New Orleans. Assuming 50 people in each bus, some 10,000 people could have been evacuated.

A Black-American teenage hero, Jabbar Gibson, commandeered one of the buses himself and evacuated 50 people to Houston. Here is a picture of the heroic actions of Gibson (see photo posted at http://www.pasadenapundit.com)

DRUDGE REPORT is reporting on it also with the caption, "WHY DIDN'T YOU DEPLOY THE BUSES DURING THE MANDATORY EVACUATION, MAYOR?...".

The mayor and the governor both knew that a category 5 storm was headed toward them, they had ALL those buses available to them, but they did nothing. They picked up no one out of the slums of NO. I'll bet that wont be the case on election day. The demos will be there in force to transport those very same people, when they want their vote.

N.O. was hit very hard and received 95% of the coverage. Mississipi was hit as hard and received little coverage and I have no idea about the status of things in Ga. and Alabama, which I also understand were hit.
