Rachel Maddow as sub host for Al Franken, was interviewing Julia Reed, a well-known writer who lives in New Orleans. Reed said she was "ashamed" to have the mayor and governor she has. Both of them blew it big time. The mayor, she claimed, was on radio Monday night downplaying the situation, and saying that people breaking into pharmacies was not a big deal. She said New Orleans is unsafe most of the time -- cops can't stop the gangs -- so officials should have known a hurricane would create big-time lawlessness
She said homes on St. Charles Ave are now occupied by people who didn't own them. "Desperate people" replied Maddow -- No, "lawbreakers," said Reed.
A later caller complained that Reed sounded like a Rush Limbaugh
She IS a GOP consultant, you snarky thing.
Geez, that's what I get for trying to be nice to you.
Yes..has she been on Matthew's show a few times?
Well, at least ONE person on this thread doesn't think so........LOL.
I heard this too. Reed was definitely not reading from Maddow's script.
My notes:
Reed referred to Nagin's "send greyhound buses" speech as "ridiculous political posturing... hardly what I'd call leadership'
She says that Nagin has lost control of the city, and Blanco has lost control of the state
On Monday the looters could have been contained
Nagin shouldn't have excused looters' behavior
NO is rife with fraud
Pray for W and New Orleans
IMHO I think that should be added to the FReeper Lexicon!
:-)
Look, I just don't want to be hit with a lawsuit - or get FR hit with a lawsuit - by identifying somebody as somebody else. If it was Julia Reed - and she's the well-known writer Julia Reed - then that name should go in the headline, you're right. But when you said she's a political consultant, I thought it must have been somebody other than the writer. (Because the writer's resume doesn't indicate she's political consultant) . Not that that mixup is over, I agree, Julia Reed's name - and designtion as writer - should go on the headline. It's just that I'm too lazy to explain it to the moderator.
Me too! It's perfect!
Don't know if any inmates were released prior to the hurricane, but this was in the Houston Chronicle yesterday:
Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas said his department was watching for a few New Orleans municipal jail inmates who may have found their way into the Superdome evacuation. They were brought to the Superdome as conditions worsened at the city jail but could not be accounted for later
Can you not grasp the fact that she can be a writer AND a political consultant?
And everybody knows you're too lazy already.
"I have read actual inmates were released prior to the hurricane as they had not plan to evacuate them.
You have the wolves preying on the welfare ward sheep."
What you heard, however, was wrong. They evacuated the jail and took them all out to other jails.
For those who don't like to wade in the muck, apparently among other things the DUers think all the stories of looting and shooting and rape are made up by (the media?) to justify letting black people die.
They seem to be upset about blaming the victims as well. But that is normal, Democrats don't believe people should suffer the consequences of their actions, unless they are rich people.
>>>Folks here seem to view this in knee jerk partisan turns. Isn't it just possible that the mayor, governor, AND president muffed it all at the same time?>>>
I agree. I LOVE President Bush, but he fumbled this one right one along with the Dept Homeland Security(not feeling real confident in the event of a terrorist on my town right now) right down to the Mayor. EVERYONE screwed this up.
This is the first time I've visited DU, and I was horrified at the level of discourse over there. Some of my posts here have not exactly been models of propriety, but Holy Cow...Those loons are really over the edge.
Thanks for catching that phone call.
This is a myth...
It was announced on cable network tv (FOX), not too long after the news about the levee breaking. Who's covering this up?
And nary a mention of the inept Blanco.
Unbelievable.
Well said. The pro-Bush argument seems to boil down to this: "well look how terrible the governor/mayor are." Not very persuasive. Of course, the Democrats are playing the same game. It seems better to view it as a matter of the blind leading the blind.
I thought of the city commandeering school buses for an evacuation, but I wondered where they'd get all the drivers.
I'm sure that the normal drivers - otherwise normal folks with families - had more immediate things to do than drive a big high-sided vehicle in 100mph winds.
With enough foresight I suppose they could have crosstrained police or National Guard to drive them but with turnover even that would be a daunting task.
No plan survives first contact with the enemy.
Not on Saturday or Sunday, but the night the levee broke. So, I don't think it's a myth. I heard it on cable news. I'm certain I didn't imagine it. Who's covering it up?
