THE GREAT FISH moved silently through the night water, propelled by short sweeps of its crescent tail. The mouth was open just enough to permit a rush of water over the gills. There was little other motion: an occasional correction of the apparently aimless course by the slight raising or lowering of a pectoral fin--as a bird changes direction by dipping one wing and lifting the other. The eyes were sightless in the black, and the other senses transmitted nothing extraordinary to the small, primitive brain. The fish might have been asleep, save for the movement dictated by countless millions of years of instinctive continuity: lacking the flotation bladder common to other fish and the fluttering flaps to push oxygen-bearing water through its gills, it survived only by moving. Once stopped, it would sink to the bottom and die of anoxia.

Missus clinton's ridiculous red-state posturing is fooling no one... except, perhaps, Susan Estrich, if we are to believe her sudden conversion from "clinton fatigue" to clinton believe.

(Estrich, a rape survivor, herself, apparently has no problem putting aside the clintons' long history of rape and predation to become the co-rapist's pamphleteer. "The Case for Hillary Clinton" is scheduled to hit the bookstores in October.)

The clintons' fundamental error is Cindy Sheehan's fundamental error. They are all too arrogant and dim-witted to understand that the demagogic process in this fiberoptic age isn't about counting spun heads; it's about not discounting circumambient brains.

Rush transcript of NPR's Neil Conan, speaking by phone with Cindy Sheehan:

NC: Very nice of you to be with us today.

CS: [cheerfully] Oh, thank youuu!

NC: I know that you were, uh, out in California last week because your mother was ill. How's she doing?

CS: Um, she's doing better. They're trying to keep her from having another stroke. And if she doesn't have another stroke, she should be able to recover.

NC: That's good news. Now, tell us, a little bit about your son, Casey.

CS: My son Casey was an amazing human being. He was gentle, loving, peaceful, sweet. He always just wanted to help people. He was an Eagle Scout and an altar boy for ten years. He had been in college for three years before he was recruited. He was just, uh, an almost perfect son and a really good big brother to his two sisters and his other brother.

NC: Why did he decide to join the Army?

CS: Well, he got lied to by his recruiter. His recruiter made him five promises that he broke all the promises to Casey. Casey was a very trusting and trustworthy person. So, he felt everyone else was trustworthy. Especially somebody who represents the government.

NC: Mmm hmmm. But, so, did he say afterwards, "I was duped?"

CS: Um, he, he, when we'd ask him about all these things that your recruiter promised you, he's just say, "Well, Mom, you know, it's the Army. They didn't tell us they didn't have to fulfill their promises. We were the only ones who had to fulfill our promises."

NC: Mmm hmm. And did he write you letters about what he was doing in Iraq?

CS: Well, he was only there five days before he was killed. He started one letter that he never finished, and we got it back with his things.

NC: What did it say?

CS: Um…well, I'll give you the general thing, but it was kind of personal. Y'know, he said that, um…it should be a pretty smooth year, that they were looking forward to a smooth year. And he was killed four days later. And he said that he wished he could be home for his sister's graduation. And some other personal things.

NC: Um, and of course, I don't want to get too personal, but…I wonder: When he was deciding to join the Army, did you try to talk him out of it?

CS: We didn't have a chance because he joined before he talked to us.

NC: Before he talked. So, he made a choice of his own.

CS: [pause] Right.

NC: Um, now, you were…

CS: [not so cheerfully] But does that have to do with him being sent to a war that's illegal and immoral to kill people and get killed for, um, a country that was no threat or harm to the United States of America?

NC: Uhhh…no. But, he wasn't drafted. He made a choice of free will.

CS: Yeah, and if we give our children to the government to serve their country, we should make sure that they're only used if it's absolutely necessary to defend the United States of America.

NC: I wonder, now, you got a chance to meet with President Bush with a group of other families for a brief time. What happened in that meeting?

CS: Ummm…I've talked about this a lot. Do we have to talk about this? Do you have any questions about what's going on right now or what we're gonna do in the future?

NC: I'm just curious; I've not heard your answer to this.

CS: Um, excuse me?

NC: I've not heard your answer, if you wouldn't mind.

CS: [someone speaking in background] [off phone comments amplified with CoolEdit CLICK HERE] I have two minutes.

NC: [amazed] You have two minutes.

CS: I have two minutes so…he was&emdash;George Bush acted like we were at a tea party, he was rude to us, and we felt worse than we did after we met with him.

NC: Mm hmm. Um, I didn't realize you just had two minutes. We thought we had more time with you today, but, uh…I did want to ask. I know you're planning to, when President Bush comes back to Washington, you're planning to continue the protest here in Washington D.C.

CS: Yeah, we're taking the bus tour to Washington D.C. and we're all meeting there on September 24 for the big United for Peace and Justice…um, war protest.

NC: And you did get a chance to meet with some of his senior advisors a couple of weeks ago. Did you get a chance&emdash;did they listen to you, or did they talk to you?

CS: He-hello?

NC: Did they listen to you? Or did they talk to you?

CS: Hello?

NC: Yes. Hi?

CS: [clear as a bell] I didn't hear your question, I'm sorry. We have a really bad connection.

NC: I apologize for that. It's the cell&emdash;

CS: That's not your fault. I'm in the middle of Crawford, so, you know, it's very spotty cell phone service out here.

NC: I understand. I was asking about your meeting with some of the President's chief advisors, including the National Security Advisor. In that meeting, did they, did they listen to you?

CS: Um, they listened to me and they talked to me. They tried to tell me things that I knew weren't true, and so finally I said, "Just because I'm a grieving mother doesn't mean that I am stupid." And I said, "I don't believe you guys are stupid either." So we ended the meeting and they said they would pass on my concerns to the president, and then…they left.

NC: So you felt like you were being dismissed.

CS: I felt like I was being patronized.

NC: Patronized.

CS: And I felt that they thought that they were gonna be able to intimidate me into leaving, and, or impress me by the high level of officials that they sent.

NC: What would you say to President Bush if you had another chance to meet him?

CS: I'd say, what was the noble cause he sent my son to die for? And, why are soldiers still fighting over there when we know this war is based on lies, and to tell him to quit using my son's name to justify the continued killing.

NC: As you know, there are parents of other men and women who died in Iraq who say you're using their sons' and daughters' names in your cause.

CS: To stop the killing? You know, just because my son's killed, why should I want any other children to be killed? Why would I want any other families to be going through this and this seems to be the President's reason for continuing the war because he's killed so many American soldiers already he has to kill more. And I believe that's the most insane and the most immoral reason for continuing the war.

NC: I understand what you're saying, but, they say you don't speak for them.

CS: I never said I spoke for them. I never said I spoke for 100% of the military families. I never claimed to. I know they have their opinions and I believe that's their right to their opinions.

NC: Fair enough. Do you st&emdash;You've come out…A lot of statements have been attributed to you as this…Camp Casey has grown, as this movement has grown, and uh…

CS: I gotta, I have to go now. Thank youuuu. [click]

NC: [dumbfounded] Cindy Sheehan. Leaving us there in Crawford, Texas. We apologize for that. We had arranged with people there to speak with Cindy Sheehan for the remainder of this segment and take some phone calls as well. Uh, evidently, plans changed at the last minute and we apologize for that.

Neil Conan interviewed Cindy Sheehan on Talk of the Nation yesterday. In this interview Ms. Sheehan is evasive, deceptive and appears to lie or make things up. In the end, she quickly pretends she has phone problems and informs Neil she has only 2 minutes left. NPR had booked her for the entire segment.

She ended the interview when she got mad at a question Neil asked her about her first meeting with President Bush. I recorded the interview from this link and amplified the off phone comment she appeared to make to someone with her in crawford. Her cheapshot comment goes to the root of the type of person cindy is.

It's amazing to me that she'd be so hostile in such a friendly environment as NPR! What is really funny, is that after feigning cell phone reception problems and ending the interview, Neils next guest was a father who lost a son in Fallujah and is protesting Cindy. He recites an experience he had with Cindy where she FAKED bad cell phone reception with him...

Get the Clintons Off the Stage

The Clintons are back.

Sidney Blumenthal-much hated former Clinton aide, ethically challenged former journalist-$850,000 advance in hand, has a new book out on May 20, attacking everyone who ever attacked him or the Clintons, rehearsing once again the old right wing conspiracy, every attack on them, answered. The right wing conspiracy revived, answered, again.

Hillary's book is next.

Could somebody please tell these people to shut up? The Clintons suck up every bit of the available air. Nothing is left for anyone else. They are big, too big. That's the problem.

The 2004 candidates need a chance to get some attention, to rise to Clinton's level, which they never will do as long as the likes of Sidney Blumenthal are playing into the hands of conservatives in insisting on debating the scandals of the 1990's. The Republicans shouldn't have impeached him for it, but he shouldn't have given them the ammunition. And we shouldn't still be discussing it.

Why are we? Or more accurately, why are they?

Not because it serves the interests of the Democrats of the future.

It doesn't help Howard Dean, or John Kerry, or Dick Gephardt. It gets Sidney on TV shows. If the issue is ethics, no one has less than Sidney Blumenthal. He used to call me during the Dukakis campaign, which I was running and he was supposed to be covering, to offer covert advice, which if I accepted might result in better coverage. Much later, when I criticized him, he tried to get me into trouble with my editors. All the while, I was defending his boss. That's Sidney. He's Hillary's best friend. No wonder the Republicans are delighted to see him return to the spotlight.

It raises money for their causes.

The Bill and Bob (Dole) show has proven to be a collossal bore. The ratings have fallen. Is anyone getting the message? I fear not.

Let's not mince words.

Hillary Clinton is never going to be president of the United States. There is no more divisive figure in the Democratic Party, much less the country, than the former first lady. And I like her. But many women don't. Even Democratic women. Even working women. Not to mention nonworking, independent, non political women. She can be a great senator. She's smart, hard-working and effective. She is much respected among her peers.

But the more people who talk about her as a future president, the less attention the current candidates, who might win, receive.

Revisiting the scandals of the past does no service to the Democrats of the future.

Bill Clinton is a brilliant man. But the more attention he gets, the more the Democrats of the future suffer. He would be the first to say this, if it weren't about him.

Enough with the Clintons. Please. Not for the sake of the Republicans. But for the Democrats.

he puffery rising from the clintons' perpetual promotion machine seems endless. (The discontinuous miasmic belches are imperceptible.)

This clinton-machine effluence defies not only the laws of logic and decency but also the first law of thermodynamics -- conservation of energy.

That is, if one fails to considers entropy.

The second law of thermodynamics states that the quality of energy in a closed system is degraded irreversibly. Physical, chemical, and electrical energy transform into thermal energy --heat. Reversing the process, e.g., heat into physical energy, cannot fully occur within the system without an inevitable loss of energy in the form of irretrievable heat. Energy is not destroyed; it is merely unavailable for producing work. The irreversible increase of this nondisposable energy in the universe is measured by the abstract dimension called entropy.

Clinton corruption is all about the irreversible degradation of the energy in our closed system. A leftist band of heat-producing useful idiots is currently assisting in the clintons' $8-million--make that $20 million--revisionist assault.

And if ever there was a heat-producing useful idiot, it is Harvard's Elizabeth Sherman, who contends, apparently, that the clintons' rape of Broaddrick is somehow mitigated over time.

Contrast Sherman with clinton Administration veteran, Berkeley professor, J. Bradford DeLong, who observed missus clinton up close:

"My two cents' worth--and I think it is the two cents' worth of everybody who worked for the Clinton Administration health care reform effort of 1993-1994--is that Hillary Rodham Clinton needs to be kept very far away from the White House for the rest of her life. Heading up health-care reform was the only major administrative job she has ever tried to do. And she was a complete flop at it. She had neither the grasp of policy substance, the managerial skills, nor the political smarts to do the job she was then given. And she wasn't smart enough to realize that she was in over her head and had to get out of the Health Care Czar role quickly.... there is no reason to think that she would be anything but an abysmal president"

Good information. However, Cindy decided her first jump wasn't high enough, and right after Katrina hit, she took the time to blame the hurricane on, yep, you guessed it, George Bush.

The RATS are in big trouble, Cindy Sheehan and all the groups that support her are the base of the party. Why didn't Hanoi Kerry try to show up the Prez and meet with Cindy ? What will the base do when Roberts gets confirmed ? Can you say "third party" ?

Mia...I still can't make it out. Is she being told "2 minutes", or something else?
By the way, It's always amusing when someone is told something in clear, audible tones, and you know they heard and understood, yet they utter "excuse me?" as if that does indeed excuse them from being duplicitous...which in this case, is exactly what's occurring.

PJ...What about making Ma Sheehan the new DUFU mascot? Since she blows enough smoke on her own you'd just have to superimpose her image over the beaver's.
