Let me add an oldie but goodie:
Forbidden Planet (1956) Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, Walter Pidgeon.
I also really like Bladerunner, Enemy Mine, The Fifth Element, The Postman (probably mostly cause I liked the book), Tron, THX1138, Farenheit 451 (and a number of others!)

Forgot about Tron...that movie was way ahead of its time. (and the video game was not so bad either).

Glad somebody mentioned THX1138! The chrome faced cops could double in T2. Plenty was said in that little film.

A lot of people crapped on The Postman, and while it's a heavily flawed movie, I have a lot of respect for Costner in trying to make a faithful adaptation, in both spirit, and, er, letter, of the original David Brin book. It's no masterpiece, but it isn't a disaster either.

The license plate on the Deuce Coupe in "American Graffiti" read: THX 138

"Alien Nation", the movie of which was well shot, great fun, and made sense. Like the Stargate series, the Alien Nation series was gawdawful.

Forbidden Planet, particularly regarding the time in which it was made, stands as a classic. It's usually the first to my mind; may be the movie that made me love SF.
