Getting your opinions--vanity
Me | August 9, 2005 | Doug Loss

Here's something that I posted a day or two ago on the forum site for my home-town newspaper, mainly to try to cause some strokes among the whacko lefties there:

"OK, this is going to irritate a bunch of you I suspect. SGould [a leftie who admantly denies being one, and even denies being the person referred to in his listed email address :) ] is adamant that religion has no place in public discourse. I expect that view is generally agreed with by the liberal contingent here. Religion shouldn't be promulgated or exercised on public property, or in any way get a benefit from the government. Does that get to the basis of your understanding of the relationship between religion and government?

"But who decides what is a religion and what isn't? The current brouhaha over evolution vs. intelligent design gets to the nub of that. The ID people claim that theirs is a scientific theory that deserves equal exposure to the theory of evolution; their opponents claim that ID is just religion disguised. So the claim of a religion isn't being made by the practitioners of the "religion" but by their opponents for the purpose of excluding them from a facet of public life.

"Now we get to the nub of my argument. Back in 2001, Stanley Kurtz wrote a thought-provoking piece in the National Review called "The Church of the Left: Finding Meaning in Liberalism."

http://www.nationalreview.com/contributors/kurtz053101.shtml

"In it he makes a compelling case that for Liberals their political ideology has taken on the character of a religion more than a mere political point of view. I must say, I find his arguments very enlightening on why the left acts as it does.

"This is an exact analogy with the evolution vs. ID debate. I'm sure the left will absolutely refuse the label of "religion" for their shared belief system. But I claim that that system has all the attributes of a religion and therefore is one.

"Therefore I believe that proponents of this belief system shouldn't be allowed to use public property or public funds to promulgate their faith upon the rest of us. After all, we have our own religions, thank you very much. Just keep your leftist credo in your Democratic Clubs and union halls and out of public sight."

That's it. Of course, the lefties are crawling all over this with ridicule. Can any of you think of supporting arguments for this, or ways to make it better? Thanks for your help!

I can, but I won't. Personally, I believe neither ID nor evolution.

Instead....I believe....in unintelligent design.

We were all handmade by....uh...Al Franken. Which explains the poor workmanship....

All hail Al Franken, Lord and Master of Creation!

All salute his pudginess!

All praise his supreme ineptitude!

But hark! Al Franken does not rule alone. Verily, he goes forth with a bevy of poorly chosen titans. Like Howard Dean "he who screeches in darkness". And John Kerry, the 2-faced Janus of a new millenium. Not to mention Hillary Clinton, Al Franken's chief consort and divine mother of the global village.

Now, prepare to learn the innermost secrets of this faith: who REALLY is Dubya "Hitlerantichristbabyeater" Bush's father (Hint: It's not Darth Vader...Oh all right, it's Chewbacca.), how the Jews are controlling the media through dental fillings and why Christians are the spawn of the devil.

Tape is finished. If you enjoyed learning this earthshattering revelations and would like to hear more, please send 10 easy payments of 19.95$ to OhmygodIcantbelievethosemoronsfellfor it at 217 Vine St., Hollywood CA 18135

Please note, our faith operates on levels of double secret super probation secrecy. Only by sending the great prophet (yours truly) all your money can you hope to achieve salvation. Act now! Movie stars are doing it, and Al Franken knows that movie stars never made a mistake when it came to their personal lives....

Thank you kindly. But screw that, cults are much more lucrative... ;) I do a bit of creative writing every so often, though.
