Mumbai is the original name. The British renamed it Bombay. When the BJP came to power they went back to the original names of Calcutta (Kolkata), Madras (Chennai), etc.

27 inches in one day. I wonder if that is a record. One place I lived had 11 in one day, and the rain was pouring like a waterfall from the sky all day without stopping.
Stay safe! And send more news when you can.

It'll always be known as Bombay even tho officially it's now Mumbai. Many Bombayites/Bombayans still refer to it as such.
When the city was a bunch of islands, it was known as Mumba Devi, after the statue of a goddess on one of the islands.
The Portugese, who were on the islands by the early to mid 1500's may have been responsible for the change, but it certainly took hold after the British secured it via imperial marriage, IIRC.

I heard 37 too, but the Beeb reported 27 for a certain 24 hour period, perhaps the 37 was a measurement from the area that got the most or that particular monsoon rain cycle.

It wasn't the BJP that started the process of renaming Indian cities. It was regional political outfits. The Shiv Sena(army of Shivaji,a Maratha leader) renamed Bombay to Mumbai after coming to power in 1996 in alliance with the BJP.The Tamil Chauvenist DMK party renamed Madras to Chennai, while the Commies decided to show their patriotism in renaming Kolkata.

According to
Yahoo! News:
The city's weather bureau said Mumbai received 944.2 millimeters (37.1 inches) of rainfall in a 24-hour period ending mid-morning Wednesday, the most rainfall ever recorded in a single day in India and beating a record which has stood since July 1910.

Hey guys there is a breaking news! There has just been a stampede in Mumbai and 16 people are reported dead.
It was caused by rumours about Powai dam bursting and people fleeing the area by thousands!
