John McCain Will Play Ball?

Looks like John McCain may have come to his senses about Supreme Court nominees:

DrudgeReport: Sen. McCain [R-AZ] Strong Words On Supreme Ct Nomination at Dallas Fundraiser: 'During the campaign, President Bush said he will appoint judges who will strictly interpret the constitution... thinking anything else is either amnesia or ignorance... elections have consequences... whomever he nominates deserves an up or down vote and no filibuster... and an up or down vote is what we will have'
Strong words indeed. But they were given out of the mouth of one of the ringleaders of the Gang of 14. This gives me doubt as to the veracity of the statement (notwithstanding its sincerity and tenor). But it must be admitted, McCain stood by the President strongly with similar statements in support of the President in 2004 despite being courted by John Kerry for a Vice President nod and McCain's disdain for Bush's 2000 primary campaign methods. This also leaves one wondering if this statement comes on the heels of some sort of deal that has been worked out with the White House which will not be favorable to conservatives.

There is reason for hope, in spite of his independent ways, that McCain will fight on behalf of the President based on his 2004 performance. Yet there is reason to be concerned, based on his leadership in the recent "compromise" that somthing fishy is happening here.

And I will never forget the 7 Republicans:
John McCain
Lindsey Graham
John Warner
Olympia Snowe
Susan Collins
Mike DeWine
Lincoln Chafee

May their conscience drive them nuts. Or maybe they already nuts. They should be on our Republican watch list. They might get a pass this time, but just shaft the party again.
