The difference is, you'll probably never post threads on a message board gleefully comparing your meds with other FReepers. :-)

Naaaahhhh.... Bragging about my caffeine intake, OTOH....

I will say this much, however: The first novel I ever get published will be dedicated to my wife and GlaxoSmithKline. 8>)

Cabinet springs open, showing the two cases of Red Bull that were hidden in it.

Ugh! Now, as a psych major I agree that mental illness is no joking matter. However, I think everyone can agree that prescribing drugs in unnecessary situations is a huge problem nowadays. A lot of them say that they are on several anti-depressents... if one isn't working, I think it's safe to say that your problem isn't chemical. Now, I am not 100% opposed to medication like this; Paxil really turned my brother's life around. But something is wrong when you are on THIS much medication. As someone said earlier I'm sure... no wonder they want free healthcare!

And the way he got scammed was incredible. Yes, many others have been scammed by the Nigerians but Hinn outdid them all by TRAVELING to Nigeria only to get scammed to the tune of about $4 million.

Actually, a very large percentage of Nigerian victims actually go there. Read about it in Reader's Digest.

How many of us here take antidepressants?

Not nearly enough of you, as far as I can tell.

Coming from a family with a strong history of mental health issues like OCD, Alcoholism, and manic depression

As E.B. White showed in Elements of Style, the key to superior writing is to eliminate extraneous words. For example, you could have just said, "My family are Democrats."

I have taken Paxil for 2 years and doubt I will ever go off the drug. Does that mean I am weak??

No. Whining about it on the Internet does.

first i was on paxil but it made me too zombie-like.

"it was bad enough i was voting for the same candidates as millions of dead people, that doesn't mean i wanted to act like one the rest of the time."

Paxil made me hear voices in my head (not the usual ones)and made me feel very paranoid and think that I was being stalked,

I thought it was being a barking looney-left moonbat that made you paranoid. Now DUmmie MN ChimpH8R (gee, I wonder why he's depressed) has better feelings with effexor, and the voices in his head say pleasant stuff like, "that Michael Moore is sooooo dreamy, isn't he?"

You should hear what the voices in my head are calling you.

Let me tune in my Moonbat Telepathy Receivicon unit to the frequency of DUmmie donheld's head...his voices are saying "Dreamboat! He's a big chimp-hating dreamboat! He can put on a tight flightsuit and accomplish a mission with me anytime!"

I Would Call You Strong.

"Especially after you accomplish that mission, big boy!"

Strength comes with facing reality.

This would therefore make DU the weakest site on the web, and it would make your advice the equivalent of getting stock tips from Cousin Eddie...

"You can't lose on this one...It's such a sure thing I put in an order for a brand new self-dumping toilet for my mobile home!"

Our mental health is just as important.

Yeah, a steady diet of hate and loopy political theories is sure to be good for your mind.

For myself, it has helped my self esteem immensely.

"These days, I'm proud to be a hateful loser."

I am on top of the world.

"...lookin'...down on Creation, and the only explanation I can find...is the venting of a spleen by a dork named Howard Dean...his scream put me on top of the world..."

I'm glad these drugs are available to my husband, even though he's not a killer or a rapist, because his untreated brain has nasty side effects.
[We know, DUmmie sfexpat2000. We know.]

I concur. For example, he married sfexpat2000. If that ain't a medicine that needs a big fat yellow-and-black-striped warning label, I don't know what is. "Side-effects include harpie-matrimony syndrome and sustained moonbatism. Do not take this medicine if you have an engagement ring sitting around..."ore

Maybe dems win it next time and someone will have the guts to get national health insurance passed.

Hill and Bill "had the guts" in '93, and it worked out really well for you guys...

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If your going to self-medicate go natural. Orange juice and creatine gives a turbo charge on the way from the office to the gym. Arginine alpha-Ketoglutarate and glutamine(amino acids) are good too. No prescription required. Available at most vitamin stores.

One of them was taking the medication that I do and it's not an antidepressant. It's Luvox and it is for Obsessive Compulsive disorder. It is also not recommended for teenagers. The doctors and the parents are the problem not the chemicals themselves. I have been OCD since childhood. I feel no effect from Luvox, I'm just finally able to control the thoughts that made me miserable for thirty some years.

I certainly meant no disrespect. There are too many medications on the market and they have become too convenient for both doctors and consumers. We're ignoring a lot of problems that can probably be treated at least to a certain degree without medication. For some of these disorders medicine doesn't treat the problem. It only hides the symptoms.

Though I am not on any antidepressants or drugs to treat these kinds of disorders, I have a different condition for which I will need to take prescription medication for the rest of my life. I hate it. I wish there were other alternatives, but there aren't. If there were, I would try to get off the stuff.

There are helpful medications and there are medications of convenience. It's very difficult to draw the line between them now that we have more behaviors being reclassified as disorders. Giving these medications to people because they are upset about the result of an election is irresponsible, and in fact fosters their behavior.

I completely agree and I hope I didn't "vent" on you. It's just that after Columbine a lot of people jumped on the anti-drug bandwagon. It was a knee jerk reaction and I'm still a little gun shy. Thank you for your kindness, FRiend!

That aspect of Columbine should have been a wake up call to doctors, parents and teachers, that it is dangerous to be so nonchalant about passing out behavior-altering medications as if they were candy.
