This week I watched a CNN interview on television. I didnt catch the names, but we had a host, someone for the Patriot act, and someone against. The host betrayed their position by their facial expressions and body language alone. When the person against the Patriot Act made a comment, he smiled and nodded his head. When the person for spoke, he made a face like he had just gotten a whiff of a restaurants dumpster, and waved his hand like he was trying to fan away the flies. So obviously he was against renewing the provisions in the Patriot Act. I would like to comment on the substance of the interview.
The points made in favor of the Patriot Act were 1) Information must be shared between various agencies, and 2) Third party information needs to be made available to the FBI without waiting for a judge.
Take a look at a summary (I have gotten the words as close as I could) of the exchange between the host and the person for the Patriot Act.
HOST: Isnt it true that the Patriot Act makes personal information available without an order from a judge? PERSON FOR THE PATRIOT ACT: Yes, but only third party information, medical, my signing in here at CNN, etc.
HOST: Yes but isnt this reminiscent of the KGB, with the FBI prying into peoples affairs? PERSON FOR THE PATRIOT ACT: No . It simple saves time by not needing to wait on a judicial order
HOST: Isnt it true that the Bush Administration is playing on peoples fears post-911 to push this act through PERSON FOR THE PATRIOT ACT: No. The fears that we do have are very real. 911 really happened
Now let me state the obvious
How dare the host on CBN compare the FBI to the KGB and then talk about the Bush Administration using fear to bend the opinion of the people! Isnt mentioning the KGB likely to induce fear? How about Amnesty International comparing Gitmo to the Gulag? Isnt that likely to produce fear? I wonder if we will see our host doing a story on that!
correction CBN towards the end of the article should read CNN as above. Early morning typo
