Well they won't really do that, because, you see, that would be "going too far." Giving a few hours of free publicity to the most prevalent hoax theories regarding 9/11, however, is apparently not going too far. But the folks at ARD, German public television, did not stop at that: they also portrayed those hoax theories in a very positive light. In the 600th episode of their top-rated crime show, Tatort (which basically means "scene of the crime"), which aired last night, the sympathetic character is a young lady with a troubled past who finds her boyfriend -- her Arab boyfriend -- dead and bloody on the floor of her apartment. She scrams immediately, because (as we later find out) she knows full well that the CIA -- or some kind of equally demonic American hit squad -- simply must be responsible and they'll be after her next. Why? Because her dear and deceased Freund -- "Marwan" -- had inside knowledge of 9/11 -- a hoax perpetrated by Bush, Cheney, Perle and Wolfowitz (all of whom were specifially named) -- and was in the process of revealing the hoax by releasing information over the Internet.
When she brings the skeptical cops (who know of her past difficulties) to her apartment, they find nothing: the place is spic-and-span. Well, of course only an organization like the CIA could do a hit and then clean it up like that in such a short time. The two cops -- one of them a younger fellow who begins to attach himself to her emotionally -- maintain their skepticism for a short while, but eventually come around fully to her side, particularly as the younger fellow witnesses her almost getting kidnapped off the street.
I must now explain to American (and other non-German) readers that Tatort is a rolling series that features specific detectives from multiple German cities (last night's delight was in Bremen). This means that we viewers come to know the detectives, sympathize with them, like them, etc. So the fact that the young lady won over these two detectives has to be understood in the context of the German viewing public's enjoyment of and trust in these detectives. This "winning over" occurs relatively early in the episode, meaning that all three of them are "sympathetic characters" together throughout the bulk of the plot.
In order to drive the point home, the writers included a love interest for the older, female detective. An old flame of hers is suddenly in town and the two sleep together. Of course this is no coincidence. It turns out that this old flame works for an international security contractor with clients including -- the horror!!! -- the U.S. Department of Defense and ... the dreaded CARLYLE GROUP!
I waited it out until the end, thinking that maybe -- just maybe -- a final twist would show that all of the 9/11 nonsense was just that: nonsense. This twist did not materialize. Instead, the cheesy ending shows the young lady in an Arab country -- she got away from the CIA (or whomever).
Simply put: German public broadcasting, which is supported by a mandatory fee that all televison owners must pay, celebrated the 600th episode of one of their most successful programs by broadcasting a story that fully and unambiguously supported 9/11 conspiracy theories that place the President of the United States and those around him at the center of a plot to purposely bring about "their" Middle East war.
One more comment: three words -- sickening, pathetic and Dhimmitude -- came to my mind whenever the show pondered Marwan and his martyrdom for truth. This is because the show's producers always included beautiful and melancholy Arab music during these moments. Message: Arabia/Islam good, innocent, peaceful, soft, misunderstood, unfortunate; America powerful, wicked, murderous, deceitful, evil.
I was so furious last night that I couldn't write about it, and I'm very glad -- and thankful -- to see today that I was alone neither in noticing it nor in abhoring it. I am particularly happy to see that the Medienkritik family of websites, in both English and German, has commented on it.
[UPDATE. I like seeing how the Western Hemisphere gets to pick up on these kinds of stories now thanks to blogs, and most particularly thanks to Medienkritik readership. Michelle Malkin has already commented on the ARD episode, as has the Jawa Report. All within 24 hours of me seeing the actual episode. This is why I love blogs.]
There's got to be another word than hoax.
The buildings really fell down. I've been the NYC and they aren't there any more.
Perhaps they could call it a CIA conspiracy. The question is not whether the events happened, it is who was behind them.
They hired David Copperfield to make it disappear.
Good, now get that Burka on. No driving, school or work outside of home for you. And if I decide to rape you, it will be your fault because you should have fought back harder. Don't worry, we will stone you to death to cleanse you of your sins...
/sarcasm off
Don't you wish our intelligence agencies had at least a small fraction of the competence ascribed to them in the populist lore?
So, you think they'll ever do a show about 'honor killings' or female genital mutilation?
Of course the twist materialized. Big time!
The german bimbo entered into hell; and it's a neverending hell that keeps on giving: a western woman in a muslim country.
Talk about a life sentence! And what's the beef? everybody's happy. The bimbo is in hell, and I'm happy knowing what she doesn't.
I don't think the producers of the show really believe that 9/11 was a Bush conspiracy. Not that I know them or have ever seen the show, but I'm willing to bet that they're doing it to please their Muslim viewers.
It's sort of like a cowering dog wagging his tail and trying to lick his abusers hand. "Please like us. *pant* *pant* See? We believe that all Muslims are good and honorable and that George Bush is evil incarnate. We didn't pee on the carpet. Can we have a Milk Bone now"?
